Eidolons are basically summons that characters can call throughout the game,

As a side note: Depending on which item is equipped, alternate summons can occur with Eiko when using Carbuncle or Fenrir. In order for Carbuncle to cast haste, equip Emerald. In order to cast shell, equip a Moonstone, and to cast vanish, equip a Diamond. Otherwise, Carbuncle will always cast reflect. If Maidan Prayer is equipped when summoning Fenrir, a wind attack will occur instead of the normal earth attack.
