Final Fantasy XUser ReviewThis is what Final Fantasy should be. Everything put into this game has been flawlessly combined to make a perfect gaming experience that few others have even attempted.Scoring: Gameplay 9/10 This game has that Final Fantasy flair for going in an original direction, but still retains some old RPG elements that keep it on the ground. The TBS (Turn-Based Battle System) was a welcome return from the worn-out ABS (Active Battle System). The summoning aspect of the game is very enjoyable, and you come to enjoy the awesome effects that the Aeons can achieve. At times, summoning becomes essential. The world itself is very detailed and beautiful, and movement is not just a chore between battles. Like any RPG, there are menus galore, but they are mostly user-friendly and useful. The new Sphere Grid mechanic for character enhancement is very interesting, but can be annoying and tedious at times. Each character is unique, and the mechanic of switching in and out of battle to get an advantage over the enemy is welcome from trying to predict what you will need before the battle begins. Now, all your characters can be used all the time. The minigames are a blast. There is so much to explore and so far to take your characters that you will never be bored. Overall, very good gameplay, but still not perfect. Storyline 10/10 This game gives you characters that can really be fleshed out, and that can really be considered real. They are all individuals, from the type of weapons they use to their individual personalities. The story itself is extremely deep, and more than once it made me cry. (That's a big deal for me). You grow attached to these characters, and begin to feel for them and their problems. Square did an excellent job on this one. Perfect. Sound 10/10 The music in this game reflected the personality and gave depth to the individual places, and never became monotonous. From the opening "Prelude" to the battle theme, all the instrumantal tracks are excellent, and really give the effect needed in their situations. You can feel your heart race when a certain song plays, and you become nervous. Others make you sad and still more make you angry. The vocals are pure genius, and really make this game come alive. The voices of the individual characters give depth and meaning to the story, and all are excellently portrayed. Replayability 5/10 This game is so deep, you can only really play through it twice without getting bored. But, the first time I played through, I logged over 4 days worth of play, so it really shouldn't bother you that you can't play through it again. Value 10/10 The game gets better and better as it goes on, and you won't want to put it down. The graphics are superb, and the soundtrack stands alone for itself. The story is rich and takes many turns, relieving the monotony of old-school RPGs. The characters are well-made and unique. All in all, a very enjoyable experience for the first FF game on the PS2. Overall: 44/50 By: Swordbearer |
