DVD kills VHS

Ten years ago, Digitial Versatile Disc (DVD) was invented. Since then, it has overtaken VHS in sales and rentals. DVD is now killing VHS. VHS can be played only on a VCR and TV screen, while DVD can be played on a DVD player and TV screen, a modern video game console, a PC or Mac, or a portable DVD player. Many motion pictures released to theaters from 2004 onwards have been or will be released solely on DVD. Television programs also get transferred solely to DVD. Commentators have predicted that this year (2006) is the final year for new releases on VHS.

Thanks for making the effort at a meaningful post, but your content was useless. We already all know this, but apparently you've just figured this out.

Yes, what you're saying has secretly played on my head. I've noticed that VHS are less popular, just because the DVD is more neat and less spacetaking. If you go to rent some movies, you mainly see DVD's. They are more easy in use, as you can skip scenes quickly, they have excellent quality and they never cease to amaze.

It's like music video's were invented or discovered and killed the radiosongs. Okay, there are still radiolisteners, but most of the action was happening on the screen. It's something like this situation where one overrules the other. Personally, I'm glad VHS is dissappearing. The video quality wasn't as good, they're too big, and compared with the DVD, they're pretty much a joke.

[And in the 5th Round: DVD makes an excellent evasive moves and goes in for the kill. VHS doesn't stand a chance! What a fight, ladies and gents, what a fight!!]

Eh, you know what I mean...

Good, **** VHS. I'm sick of the big tapes and bad picture and inability to skip scenes and watch deleted scenes and shit like that. VHS was great years ago, but its just past its lifespan now. Burn em all I say.

DVD won't be the main thing for long anyways though. The battle between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD will commence soon, and within a number of years movies, games and everything else will be mainly bought on one of these formats. I think in the end, Blu-Ray will come out on top. More storage space, better backers in my opinion (Sony, Apple, Dell, Disney, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, etc), and a very strong coating which will reduce damage from scratches imensely (Thats a big gripe with me, I get ****ing pissed when my DVDs get scratched and don't work).

Sometimes, DVD annoys me. If they get warped, forget about it. VHS was more reliable when it came to rentals.

Yeah. I hate renting dvds. People don't take care of rental stuff. There'll be scratches and fingerprints and bleh.

VHS is good for rentals. People can't fuck'em up unless their vcr sucks and it eats tapes. Lol.

But other than that, DVDs rule.

DVD's cost more the VHS too, but impossible to take good care of. Put a DVD near heat or a window with the sun coming through it, it's ruined. Paying more then 40 bucks for something like that isn't worth it in my opinion.

I work at Blockbuster and I don't to where to start to tell you how many complaints we get because DVDs fail to work correctly. We're always replacing them. Next to DVDs, it's video games.

Just wait though, Blue Ray DVDs will replace DVDs in about ten years, so welcome to the future. Get ready to start replacing all your favorite movies in about 3-5 years because DVDs will be going the way of the VHS. Blue Ray will not be popular for a while, but like DVD, as movies are released more on DVD, PSP, and now Blue Ray, in 10 years you will only be seeing coming to Blue Ray or whatever it is going to be called, somehow I do not think PSP/UMD will last, though more and more movies are being released on it. But it is not going to replace DVD, that is Blue Ray. Especially with PS3's being made with Blue Ray, all us gamers can easily say, DVD or Blue Ray hmm, we can do either because we got the options. I doubt we will for a while, seeing as DVD is more expensive than VHS and Blue Ray will no doubt be more expensive than DVD. But give it time, people will pay 15-20 for a DVD, they will eventually be willing to play 20-30 for a Blue Ray.

I won't. I won't buy a DVD unless it's under 15 bucks, anything more than that is highway robbery. I'll never buy a brand new movie unless I'm wasted or trying to get laid.

I don't see why I should buy a Blue Ray anyway. What, just because Sony wants to make more money? How is it so much better than a regular DVD? How is that possible, I thought we had High Def, 5.1 Dolby, and everything else??

I think it'll be like Laser Discs and fail miserably. I mean, is anyone out there actually buying the movies for the PSP??? If your answer is yes, are you on crack? I seen friggin Kill Bill for like 30 bucks at WAlmart!! No way in hell, high way mo fo robbery!!

Just because you and I are smart enough to not buy obscenely expensive DVDs, remember the country we live it. Remember the people we are talking about. People do buy DVDs for more the $20, people do buy UMD, the general public at large are a bunch of idiots. You have to remember the people who are going to buying them. It is just a fact of nature, Sony will push Blue Ray, just like they are UMD, the selection will be there, and people will pay that extra 10 dollars because they think they are getting something more.

When in reality about the only thing that Blue Ray will help out is gaming, they can put more on a single disc, but considering 99% of the gaming industry does not even use a full DVD, it will be wasted on about everything but RPGs. And even then, I only know of 2 PS2 games that use two discs. But people like space, even if they do not know what they are going to do with it. People are weird like that.

A lot of the space taken up on DVD's by games is audio. Something like 80% of the space is used by audio, I believe. I read a few months back that the Xbox 360 tried to address that issue by giving developers better audio compression quality. Logically, developers have more space to use on DVD rather than pushing towards blue-ray like the PS3 is. Anyone know something about that?

I talked to someone who, umm, modded his X Box to play all the other consoles in existence games. And he was telling me how surprised he was when looking at a lot of the games he had on his hard drive, how little space they were taking up, they had like 4 gigs and so many of them barely past 1 gig of space. Naturally Audio and Video will take up the most, but apparently developers are not even using up 1/2 of the Disc, barely a 1/4 of it.

Well thank you, you have now officially sold me out of ever buying Blue Ray. They aren't even using all the capabilities of a DVD, so there is not going to be any better picture quality, and even if so, how good can it get? What about our eyesight? Can we really handle such vivid imagery, will it possibly overwork our eyes, or will we not even be able to handle it and not even notice the differences?

Whole thing sounds like crap to me.

Yeah I am not sure what there is that Blue Ray will be able to offer that DVD does not already, aside from large disc compacity. Which only the Special Extended Edition of LOTR will ever make use of. But my best educated guess will say that Sony is looking down the road into the future. They want to offer something that may not be a great use with the current technology, but something down the road that a new technology will use. Sony like any company wants money, but considering how risky such a move as Blue Ray is, I doubt they doing this with no plan in mind. Sony has something other than just money, because as much as people are stupid, stupidity only lasts so long and they wise up to things or they just listen to the media. But away, I figure Sony is planning something, or else they would not come out with Blue Ray.

Though you will probably be saving on all those 2 disc special editions and you will probably have an entire season of a show on one Blue Ray Disc. But I doubt convence is the only reason for it.
