Music Recommendation Thread

You know, I was just thinking that even though we have sites like pandora.com or Last FM, musical recommendation are hard to go by for getting into new bands. I'm not sure if this thread has been done before, but if not I think one good contribution to the music forum is letting people come in here and ask experienced people of certain genres of music and what's the best to check out. I just find it more interesting to ask an actual person about something they know more about than a computer. In a nutshell, anyone can come in here and ask what would be the best recommendations for a certain genre. I thought of this because I'm once again searching for new bands I want to add to my collection.

Now, of course we all know it is all mainly opinions so I do NOT want flaming, trolling, or any disrespect to anyone else because of something they like and you don't. However, I stress that when someone answers a person's call to be professional and detailed about what they should look for. No one-liners or "this [insert band name] is col!". Replies should be intelligent. Keep it mature, keep is smart, and don't ruffle any feathers. That's all I ask.

So to start us off I'll move on to why I created this thread. Fairly recently, I've been getting into metalcore since metal + hardcore punk is pretty awesome to me, so I'm wondering what metalcore bands would be best to start off with?

Not a fan of Metal-core, but I heard a supposedly Melodic-Death Metal Japanese band but to me it sounded like Metal-core, Lost Eden was their name.

With my hard drive wiped I had to kind of start again however as I grabbing back the stuff I had before I feel I have listened to it so much already its just meh. Anybody want to try and give me suggestions? I have most likely heard the band or a similar sounding one but hey, its worth a try, I want something new.

I don't know any metal-core bands, since that's not really my thing.

I would suggest just about anything by David Bowie.

Lately I'm into his Berlin Trilogy. Low, Heroes and Lodger. Low is my current pick recently, so I'd recommend that highly if you're into Bowie.

I'd also like to recomment Joe Cocker, because he and his band put out some great music in the late 60s, early 70s, and they do some great covers too. You'd never have expected so much soul from a white guy from the north of England.

But that's about it at the moment. If you're more inclined towards metal and/or punk or fusions of the two, I'm not sure you'd really dig any of my suggestions, but they're my current favourites, so I'd give them a listen.

I've been getting into Death SS lately and since you have an interest in black metal, their early stuff such as the Horned God Of The Witches compilation and their first actual album In Death Of Steve Sylvester might just be something you'd take interest in. Excellent proto black/speed/doom metal.

Well, good news is after I listened to one or three metalcore bands I'm gonna have to agree with you; they aren't my cup of tea. It was just blatant noise with a bunch of scene kids.

Now, what I'd probably much rather get into that's really pulled me in is that melodic death metal. Something like Opeth. I just like how it can be brutal one minute and soft the next. I like that combination. Throw me some suggestions similar to that.

Ah yes metal-core is really just for 13 year old kids to try and act "hardcore" whilst completely disgracing Metal in general.

Anyway Agalloch comes to mind, they are similar to Opeth but quite different sounding. Wyrd is kind of like them but more folky kind of sounding, oh and one of my favourites is Vintersorg.

Oh and Sir Kenneth did you check out Summoning? I can't stop listening to them.

Agalloch are good, they're a little like a mix between Opeth and Katatonia, which so forth leads me onto Katatonia, who are cleaner than Opeth and Agalloch in vox, but still a good listen.

You could try Hypocrisy, as well, which SOME consider to be melo-death. Heimdall will likely spread his opinion around here, too. My suggestion is that you listen to whatever advise he gives -- he's never steered me wrong in the aspect of music.

The Finalists are a pretty good alterative rock band; they aren't really well known though. The Finalist

If you like Progressive there is another band I saw in concert that wasn't too bad. They were callled SpoonFedTribe

I found myself listening to a lot of Disturbed songs lately. I am not sure what metalcore is though. People are arguing what to categorize Disturbed under but I don't care as long as I enjoy listening to their songs.

As you can see, I still like listening to some melody. I like Disturbed because they're pretty hard rock without the unintelligible growling and yelling. Their latest album -Indestructible- is pretty good. If you want a little Nu Metal, check out their first album The Sickness.

I know Disturbed is pretty mainstream which may tick off other people. But like I said, I don't care as long as I enjoy listening to the songs. I don't see why our musical preference should be dictated but what others think is 'cool' or not.

Well I'm around if you want some advice on decent grunge.
Mudhoney's had a fairly new album, it was sweet.
I mentioned it in another thread I think, but Love Battery is psychedelic Grunge, also pretty sweet to listen to. Nirvana's most widely available so it's probably the easiest first step into Grunge, though not necessarily the best. Also if you're wanting some metal with grunge influences I cannot stress how completely mind-blowing the Melvins' music can be.

Like grunge with female vocals? I'd recommend L7 (not to be confused with L-seven) and 7 Year Bitch. Both great bands. And Hole's awesome for a listen too.

Pearl Jam, I find the older stuff was better. Like the albums Ten and Vitalogy. It's not to say later albums like No Code were bad, merely I preferred the sound of their older music.

Anything else you want to know about grunge, give me a buzz via PM or something.

I like Avenged Sevenfold for something that's melodic and hard, or some older Metallica, can't go wrong there.

I have an extreme bias against screaming bands. If your singer can't SING the lyrics, I will not listen to you, no matter how awesome I think your double bass is or how fast the guitar riffs. If I wanted to hear noise and screaming, I'd go outside during the summer, if I wanted to hear good music and screaming, I'd just play acoustic music at work during service...

Some of these incorporate metalcore into their music, but aren't fully metalcore. I'll put a * behind the bands that are fully metalcore.

Atreyu
Demon Hunter
*I Killed the Prom Queen
36 Crazyfists

I've been getting into stuff more along the lines of:

Death Metal
Black Metal
Blackened Death Metal
Melodic Death Metal
Doom Metal

So I haven't really been looking into too many Metalcore bands. If you ever start to get into those types of metal, just leave a message on my profile, and I'll give you some good names to start with.
