About your Collection

I suppose this could go in the Digital media forum but seem as how its to do with Music I figure this is the best place.

  1. Anyway who here still collects non-mp3 music?
  2. What kind of music do you collect?
  3. Does anybody here have a huge selection of CD's Vinyls and/tapes and stuff?
  4. Do you like Re-releases/Splits/Demos/Live Albums?
  5. How big is your collection and how do you sort it?
  6. If you do collect Mp3s do you sort them and how?
  7. Anything else you feel you should mention...
1) I have roughly 8000 mp3s, 100+ CDs but I stoped collecting due to CDs costing all the way up to $43NZ

2) I have most of the second wave Black Metal bands and complete Discographies from Emperor and Burzum (Not counting splits/demos/rereleases), I have about 6 Classical albums, a fair amount of Death Metal like Deicide, Opeth and Morbid Angel, some old school metal from Twisted Sister, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Black Sabbath and most Slayer albums, some Punk but I sold a few CDs. I want to collect game music such as the FF OST's but they're hard to come across, I may order the FFXII OST though as Loco tells me its amazing.

3) I use to collect tapes back when I listened to queer music, I use to record to tape all the time especially mixed tapes, when I was in my early teens I started collect CDs till I got to about 30 then they all got stolen, a few later I got into Punk and started my collection again and now I have 100+ (which is quite small imo) and occasionally I buy more but frankly its too expensive when I can just download it. I like vinyls but unfortunately they're expensive to look after but I may get one someday.

4) It depends on the nature of Re-releases for example if the album is quite old and comes with new tracks then wicked but if it's just like a updated copy with a few extra songs it is annoying cause you tend to have the original, plus sometimes they are slightly differant which can be annoying. Demos are awesome, if they only release one or two... the thing with demos is though the sound quality is poor I feel it just has more feeling towards it than actual re-releases. Splits are alright, but I find the nature of them to be lacking of an actual album, kind of like a mixed CD or compilation/Best Of which I don't like too much. Live albums are good but I see them more of a Best Of and should only really be released after they have a good amount like 8+ albums, 10+ if it is a double CD as some of my music can be quite long.

5) As I said, 100+ CDs and I posted a pic earlier but if you didn't see it I sort them in alphabetical band order with the order they were released in.

6) Basically like this: C:\-\Music\Fancy name for Genre\Band (Country)\Year - Album Name\Band Name - Album - Track Number - Track Title.mp3

7) I don't know what you consider big or small but compared to some of my friends my collection is quite un-impressive, my mate Toni had over 800+ Vinyls alone which consisted of rare stuff that is hard to come accross even on ebay, this other dude has over 6000 CDs/Tapes/Vinyls but a lot of them were given to him and hes been collecting since the early 80's. But if you looked at my CD/DVD/Game collection then that is a bit more impressive imo.

1.Anyway who here still collects non-mp3 music?
Me, I prefer my music on a hard format. I always buy CDs to support the bands I like. I also like having album artwork and something to hold onto. It makes the music that much more special when you can have it in a visible format.

2.What kind of music do you collect?
Most of my music is indie and alternative rock, primarily from new British bands (2004+) as now is the era of the great British Indie and Alternative movement. Bands range from Kasabian to The Futureheads to Hot Chip to Franz Ferdinand to Muse. I also have a lot of 90's Britpop- Blur, Oasis, Stereophonics etc. I also have some old British punk, and enjoy old medolic metal, like Iron Maiden and Iced Earth. I don't "own" these CDs, however I borrow them from my dad.

3.Does anybody here have a huge selection of CD's Vinyls and/tapes and stuff?
Not huge. I have around 50 CDs including albums, singles and freebies from the NME. I do have tapes, however they are old and dusty. Many of them I got on CD.

4.Do you like Re-releases/Splits/Demos/Live Albums?
Re-releases I enjoy if they are altered slightly, such as The Automatic's re-release of their first single Recover. Its been given a little more edge and the recording is a bit better. As for re-released albums, I have none, however I would not buy an album for something which is pretty much the same as the original. As for demos, I quite like the brushier sound, as long as it is not horrendous. I have a Maximo Park b-sides album, Missing Songs, which has demos of 3 of the album(A Certain Trigger)'s songs. The sond quality is quite good, and you can see how some of the songs have changed over time. As for live CDs, they do not pull of the atmosphere that an actual concert has, however they do give a different feel to those recorded in a studio. I like them.

5.How big is your collection and how do you sort it?
50ish. I have all the albums together and alphebetised. Not just because i'm a nerd/geek or whatever, but because I find it practical to find what i'm looking for easily. The main ones I listen to are kept in a case I can take into the car, to friends houses and wherever I need them. Singles and compilations are kept in another rack.

6.If you do collect Mp3s do you sort them and how?
I have few MP3s, but the ones I have are on my computer, in the usual My Music files.

7.Anything else you feel you should mention...
Not really. I don't have a huge collection, but its enough to keep me satisfied. I still have many years of collecting to do. I hope to get better with my guitar and perhaps make a recording of my own someday, whether or not I be in a touring band, it would be quite nice to have a little something showing effort in musicianship.

What kind of music do you collect?
All kinds. Mainly punk, metal, and ska music. I do have a lot of country, some pop, jazz and blues music. I love bits and pices of all of it.

Does anybody here have a huge selection of CD's Vinyls and/tapes and stuff?
I have roughly 600 CDs... thats really it. Another 50 albums on itunes.

Do you like Re-releases/Splits/Demos/Live Albums?
Hell yes I do. 2 of the best albums I own are 311 Live and Sublime: Stand by your Van. Both are timeless on several levels.

How big is your collection and how do you sort it?
Again, about 600 CDS. I sort them alphabetically by artist name, and then in sequence by album release date.

If you do collect Mp3s do you sort them and how?
Itunes does it for me. I love my iPod and feel naked without it.

Anything else you feel you should mention...

1. Anyway who here still collects non-mp3 music?

I do, quite regularly... in fact in just the past 2 weeks I've gotten nearly 4 CDs... and a couple Sabbath tapes on a clearance rack .

2. What kind of music do you collect?

Mostly Metal, stuff like Slayer, Necrophagist, Faith No More, Dream Theater, Lamb of God, etc. Being an ecclectic, my collection expands to such things as 311 (of course XD), Silent Civilian, Primus, Morningwood, and the like... I've bought a few rap CDs as well.

3. Does anybody here have a huge selection of CD's Vinyls and/tapes and stuff?

I've got close to 500 CDs as of right now... before I had to pawn a lot of em off for a car payment I had nearly 1500. Back when tapes were still big I had a good 600.

4. Do you like Re-releases/Splits/Demos/Live Albums?

I think my nearly complete Yes re-release collection speaks for itself XD.

5. How big is your collection and how do you sort it?

As previously mentioned, huge... all alphabetized and in chronological order of release... cuz I'm OCD like that.

6. If you do collect Mp3s do you sort them and how?

I got about 1000+ mp3... all sorted alphabetically via iTunes.

7. Anything else you feel you should mention...

FREE KEVIN.

[list=1][*]Anyway who here still collects non-mp3 music?
I have loads of CD's and tapes, although I don't really collect them anymore. I usually rip them nto my pc and listen to them via that. Although I am going away next week, and so I expect to bring my MP3 player AND my CD player with all my millions of CD's along with me.

Quote:
[*]What kind of music do you collect?
Oooh, I have loads. Metal, prog metal, black metal, death metal, alternate rock, classical, jazz, blues, anything 80's/90's, hip-hop (just a bit!)... I love a bit of everything, really.

Quote:
[*]Does anybody here have a huge selection of CD's Vinyls and/tapes and stuff?
CD's and tape. I have too many CD's to count and I have a few tens of tapes under my bed, if I remember correctly. My sister does, too.

Quote:
[*]Do you like Re-releases/Splits/Demos/Live Albums?
Anythings' good.

Quote:
[*]How big is your collection and how do you sort it?
Alphabetically. Categorized. Dates from oldest to newest. It's only sensible, right?

Quote:
[*]If you do collect Mp3s do you sort them and how?
Same as above.

1. Anyway who here still collects non-mp3 music? I do, though I'll admit that many of my musical purchases are in .mp3 format. I have a handful of "illegal" downloads... things that friends have ripped for me and whatnot. I'd say about 95% of my music is all entirely legal though. I buy CDs whenever I have the urge, or I'll purchase music online if something catches my eye.

2. What kind of music do you collect? As far as "collecting" goes, that's mostly limited to videogame OSTs and classic rock. I'll pick up the occasional CD from someone new (especially Jazz, like Norah Jones), but I'll usually purchase those songs online rather than picking up the albums in the store.

3. Does anybody here have a huge selection of CD's Vinyls and/tapes and stuff? CDs? Maybe not so much. I've only got 50 or so. I have friends who have way, way more CDs. As for vinyl, there are three giant boxes completely full of it, as well as those two turntables we have upstairs... so yeah, add it all up and we're talking hundreds upon hundreds of records. Tapes... not so much any more. Maybe a couple.

4. Do you like Re-releases/Splits/Demos/Live Albums? I love live shows, but they're live for a reason. They tend to transition to media rather poorly. Low quality, too much crowd noise, etc. Re-releases are great if they include things I don't already have, otherwise they're useless to me.

5. How big is your collection and how do you sort it? Well, I think the general idea of the size has already been represented. Honestly, I don't sort it at all. Every single CD I buy, I rip to my computer, and I let iTunes do the sorting for me. I have CDs strewn all over the house.

6. If you do collect Mp3s do you sort them and how? All of a sudden this seems redundant. I guess I got ahead of myself earlier.

7. Anything else you feel you should mention... Not really, no. Like I said, most of my music is either videogame OSTs or classic rock, with a healthy addition of jazz as well. As far as non-CDs go, I'm also heavy into good VG remixes. I've got tons of them.

1. Absolutely. Though I install most of the cd's I buy on my computer, I quite like having it in a more steady form.

2. Doom metal, heavy metal, thrash metal, classic rock, NWOBHM releases, and the odd blues and stoner rock records here and there. There are other genres in my collection, but these are the bulk of it.

3. I've got a fair selection of CD's. I haven't counted them in a while, but I think I'm on the healthy side of 500. I tend to clean up in my collection once in a while, selling or giving away stuff I don't listen to anyway.

4. I absolutely LOVE re-releases when it comes to stuff which is out of print. Sabbat and Trouble for instance have some albums which are a bitch to get a hold on nowadays, and there are quite a few great bands who are currently only in circulation as bootlegs which is really a shame. Splits I don't care too much for, and live albums are great if they actually manage to catch the atmosphere of the live performance (they rarely do though)

5. Around 500, and I try to sort them alphabetically for band names, cronologically for albums.

6. I just install them really.

Anyway who here still collects non-mp3 music?
I still buy CDs, mainly. I do download some music, usually individual songs, but I very occasionally buy old tapes, and vinyl once or twice.
What kind of music do you collect?
I suppose if you mean genres, then it's primarly rock, and more specifically classic rock, if you want to call it that. Recently I've been picking up as much Bowie and Zeppelin as I can. I'm becoming highly infatuated with 70s rock music.
Does anybody here have a huge selection of CD's Vinyls and/tapes and stuff?
Since I'm barely even 18, I don't have the biggest music collection on Earth. I don't particularly have any vinyls, but I've got a handful of tapes and a bunch of CDs.
Do you like Re-releases/Splits/Demos/Live Albums?
I'm often interested in demo versions, but they don't always impress me much. But if there's a CD released of demo versions by an artist I particularly enjoy, I'll pick if up if I can afford it. I have a handful of various live albums, too, which are vital if you want to experience all the sounds the band or artist can come out with.
How big is your collection and how do you sort it?
I tend to try and sort the CDs now and again, but I often fail. Whenever I do sort them though, I place them alphabetically according to the artist, and chronologically within the artist. All in all, I have about 160 CDs.
If you do collect Mp3s do you sort them and how?
I rip all my CDs onto the computer to listen to them, but the mp3s I occasionally download (there must be around 400 individual songs or something) are pretty messy in terms of organisation. They're scattered all over the place, but I know where to find them.

1) I still collect CDs that I can't find mp3s of. I like to support the bands I like too, but since I have purchased an ipod, I rarely buy cds anymore (I often borrow cds from my friends to copy though). My music collection is over 20,000 songs as of now, probably close to 22,000.

2) I have an extremely eclectic taste in music, I can find things to enjoy in almost any type of music (besides current country rock, I'm not sure how anyone can actually like that pop shit). Including classic rock, classical and instrumental music, punk, electronic, some metal (classics like Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden basically) folk, old school R&B, some hip hop (outkast, tribe called quest, bone thugs, wu tang, dr. dre, jay-z, snoop dog, nas, beastie boys, etc), funk, country and bluegrass, indie rock, experimental, blues, some jazz and jazz fusion, indian music, brazilian music (tropicalia), asian music, etc etc. Oh yeah and videogame soundtracks of course

3) I have atleast 100 cds or more, I've never really bothered to count. I've inherited my parent's record collection too, so i have a lot of the classics like the Beatles and Stones on vinyl. As for casettes, I have a few, mostly Beatles and Beach Boys, and some Bach, Beethoven, and Vivaldi.

4) I definitely enjoy re-releases, demos, and live albums. I guess it just depends on the band though. If I like the band enough I'll definitely get into their demos and stuff, but some bands I'm fine with just their studio releases. Some bands are better live I'd say, stuff like Led Zeppelin I often times prefer listening to their live stuff.

5) My CDs used to be sorted alphabetically by Artist, but now my cds are randomly scattered about my house due to the fact that my ipod is now my central music hub.

6) I try to keep my itunes organized well. Basically It's just sorted by artist like it normally would be. I often times have to just search what forever I'm looking for due to the fact that my library is so big. I really have to clean out of my itunes sometime soon, because I'm pretty sure I have a few duplicates in there.

7) Eh..not much more else to say, I have a massive music collection, though not in hard copy for sure. My friend's dad has about 2,000 cds!! , now that is crazy! He's a real music nerd though.
