I'm not as much an expert as Sir David, but here's my explanation: Goth Metal is more mellow, more melodic and depressing where Black Metal is more aggressive, raw, and tied in with Norse Mythology.

Listen to Mayhem or Dark Funeral for a good black metal example.

Not all black Metal is tied into Norse Mythology. Amon Amarth is a great Black Metal band, but I'd hardly say THEY'RE the norm.

I suppose some of Cradles stuff CAN be depressing, such as Suicide and Other Comforts...but certainly not ALL of their stuff is unaggresive. You only need to listen to the first three tracks off of their latest album to readily descern that.

Hmm…about that. The genre Goth metal or Gothic metal does NOT exist. Lets just start by saying Goth/Gothic metal is not a word, neither a genre of music. So for you that “think that”. please think before you post. I can see that it kind of makes a bit of sense, but it just doesn’t work like that. Goth its just the style of the music( when I say “Style”. I mean style of clothes).

Gothic metal: A genre that relys on atmosphere, almost as much as black metal. In order to achieve this many of the bands rely on keyboards and other typically non-metal instruments such as violins. The guitar work is typically not very "heavy" or "brutal" and mostly just supports the keyboards.
Vocals are typically sung by a female in a semi-operatic fashion, and are usually accompanied by a male doing harsh vocals, though many bands do stray from this formula. Solos are very few and far between in the genre.
Good examples of this are Penumbra, Saviour Machine, and Asgaard.

Not really my favorite genre so I can't really describe it as well as the others, but yeah. Just go with the Wikipedia article for the most part.

Also, I wouldn't make that good of a music mod, I just know my metal. If this were the metal forum, I'd be ready and willing to do so, but eh.

Noo you would make a good mod. Well I won’t lie to you, this site sure needs new mods. Although I’m sure ill take time till they are all replace. BUT damn they should at least give other people a chance, most of the mods have been mod like for 3-5 years. Damn I also can wait to get at least a year here and about 2000 post so I could give it a shot at becoming a mod. But I don't think the webmaster would like new mods, other than the ones they have now.

Right, first off, anyone can make an entry in wikipedia. ANYONE. Using it as any basis of fact is a bad idea. But that sentence right there is mainly what I had come to now Gothic Metal as...a blanket description for the darker genres. From the SOUND of the previous definition in this thread Goth Metal seems to be an out growth of Black Metal that just doesn;t have aggresive guitar work. You are a liar if you say Cradle does not do aggresive guitar work on any of their albums. I'm sorry but you are.

Don't be stupid. Everyone tries to argue that. They have moderators. They have people that edit mistakes, in fact, they have thousands of users that edit mistakes. When vandalism appears, it is very quickly erased. If there is an issue, then users discuss the issue in public on the disussion pages and a flag, so to speak, is put up above the article to alert readers that there is an issue of some sort. And if you strongly dissagree, then become a user and bring up the issue where you will either be acknowledged, or proven wrong. Get a life and leave Wikipedia alone.
