Guitar FAQ - everything you probably wanted to know

I play a BC Rich Warlock. At first I found it a little clumsy, because I'd olny previously played acoustic. Once I got the warlock I started playing a little metal and now I love it. I found the floating bridge hard to get used to a first but now I really like it. Great semi cheap guitar for begginer metal heads (if you go with the bronze series). I plan on buying a nice jackson at some point but I'll definitly hold onto my warlock. Gotta love the evil design. (=

This article was overall pretty good, but I feel there were two errors. Primarily, you made it sound like you could put steel strings on a classical guitar. Most know that a classical guitar is not designed to handle the pressure of steel strings, and will result in the neck bending into a bow, until it breaks.

The article also seems biased against single coil pickups. It may be your opinion, or where you got the article from. Or it could be that I swear by single coils for their twang and punch.

You left out eight gauged strings as well. Not very popular, but with a good Telecaster, it can make very nice highs.

When you get into writing your guitar care article, I suggest noting that people should de-tune their guitars when flying, or overall not in use. It is terrible for the neck. Also, the problem with people leaning guitars against walls and such on their neck, also terrible.

Good point - reading over that section of the article, I jus realised that I made it sound that way. I was, of course, referring to steel-strung acoustics. I'll have to amend that.

I am biased against single-coils, since the hum drives me nuts. Still, bias isn't good in an article like this, so I'll amend that too.

I hadn't really seen 8 guage strings that often, so they didn't come to mind when I was writing that list. I'll add them for completion.

EDIT: I've changed my opinion of single-coils, particularly on telecasters. A tele loaded with fender texas custom single coils produce the best clean tone I've ever heard, which has drove me to look for a three-pickup telecaster.

Wow...I love this thread, being a guitarist myself. The information is all very useful and for the most part very accurate. The part about Jacksons under 300$ is true as can be. I got a JS-series Warrior, and it is a pile of crap.

I plan on buying an ESP LTD EC-1000, with EMG 81/60 combo.

The real problem I had with warriors was the 'spike' thing jutting out towards the floor...It made things uncomfortable when sitting down, hence why I prefer the Kelly shape.

The LTD Ec-1000 already has EMG 81/60's Personally, I have sketchy feelings with ESP's, since I have yet to find an ESP neck that 'fits' for me, but I haven't played a whole lot of ESP's yet. I've played JH's Truckster, KH-2 (Vintage and regular) and an LTD EX-400 thus far.

ESP's are damn great when it comes to their custom work. Ever seen the ESP Armor Custom? One hell of a guitar.

Um...You said it was a strat bass in that other thread...Now it's a telecaster? Fender never really made a bass in a tele shape, either. Could you please explain this discrepancy?

bc rich are awesome. you cant go wrong with them. evil great tone great looks. they do some of the best custom handmade guitars, so do esp.

Just a small update. Maton do electrics, which are quite good too! The maton Mastersound. They have an sound, and like the gibsons, thier frets are fairli high up. Good sound.

one often trick if you are new to buying guitars and dont know some of things stated on this list, it often helps to have someone who does know how to barter with anohter person well for a guitar, when i got my first guitar i did nothing but whatch my dads friend do it for me the first time when i got my first squire strat.



this weekend im going to hot licks to look at a new century gibson xplorer i saw to see if i might see how it is. its a pretty nice guitar when it comes to playing alternative and some punk rock
