Most of the information will be found there, but to give you a summary before you clicky:

My sister and I have decided to attempt to read a book a week. We are both going to set up a blog tracking our progress, thus the link above. The purpose of this post? To invite all of you to join in!

So read more and, if interested, get in touch?

I don't want you to take this the wrong way, but how can you properly enjoy the books if you're just powering through them? It's an interesting experiment though. When you and your sister are done, you should think back over the time you read one a week, and see how much you can remember about the individual books. Please try War and Peace, haha. Bonne chance.

Just because you're reading a book every week doesn't mean you can't enjoy it. I can easily clear 500+ pages in two hours' time, and actually retain information. If I want to thoroughly soak it all in, stretch it out over the course of a day and I'm golden.

If you noticed, Psiko said to set your own personal goals to see what works best for you. Not everyone is a speed-reader, and I know a lot of people who can read quickly but still prefer to spread a book out over the course of a couple of weeks.

Like Loco said, everyone can read at their own personal pace. Most books I can read rather quickly and still comprehend the words. Even if we fail, it will still be a fun trial. It is motivation to keep reading constantly, and thus why I'm excited about it.

I was just being a bit glib, haha. I really do hope word gets around about Psiko's idea, it's just the kind of thing to get people reading, people who like a challenge and relish the idea of getting to pick a new book every week or so. I couldn't do it though.

I'm mulling over your post, Loco, and next to me sits a copy of Faulkner's 'The Sound and the Fury'. It has 271 pages. So you're saying you could finish it in just over an hour, an hour and a half maybe? Do you have the space in that short time to really understand the metaphors in books, to pick up on the little clues strewn around, to really appreciate the prose? I'm not having a go here, I'm genuinely just curious. I read an awful lot, I always have, but I could never consume anything that quickly, less consume, retain and appreciate. What a skill that must be to have.

Great idea bro, count me in. I've been known to read up to three full novels in a day, so I'm sure I can manage just one in a week. =P Plus it'll help me get through the rapidly towering stack I call TBR. Seriously, almost half my bookshelf is just the books I haven't read yet. And I just ordered more to add to it. Not to mention all the stuff I have preordered...yeah, I like my books.

I've considered getting a library card, but I'm one of those weird people who actually rereads books. And I just like seeing the expressions on people's faces when they walk in and see my personal library.

Would you prefer us to each keep our own blogs or would it be okay to just use this thread for it? I have a bad habit of not updating blogs, but since I'm on here all the time I feel I'd have a better chance of remembering to update.

You can count me in to participate with this as well. I will go ahead and link to your blog in my blogroll on my own blog that I have, and I will make my entries there. Conveniently, my blog is in my signature. I mainly have anime entries right now, but it's more a blog of what I'm reading/playing/watching/writing.

So check it out when you get the chance, as I will soon put up an entry on the "Book per week" challenge.

Also, to have an easier way of keeping track of what you have read and haven't read, there is a cataloging site that DH has recommended to me called "Goodreads". You can google it or just add a .com at the end if you like. Feel free to add Crystal and I if you decide to join up.

I am definitely going to be in this somehow. Even though the books I'll end up with will probably just be little kids' stuff. There's no library where I live, and although there is a mobile library, it's mostly little kids' books on there. So... week 1, Little Bunny Goes To The Shops. Week 2, Little Bunny Plays In The Park. Week 3, Little Bunny Meets Zemus... *murderous glare*

Aha! Suggestions. I like this.

May I recommend Douglas Coupland to the challengers? His books are, in general, quite short; but more importantly, he's very easy to read. His metaphors are a bit hidden, but that doesn't stop his prose being lyrical, quick and funny. Just avoid JPod. Coupland books, JPod aside, would be good for weeks when you've got a lot going on with work/life. Good luck, brave readers...
