Castor/Pollux (Horror/Urban Fantasy)

Author: Short but sweet, I guarantee it. I have actually been working on this story for three years, but I have gone through weak rough draft after rough draft until I wrote a short horror story inspired by a country song (Field of Stone) of all things. I lost the disc it was on and tried rewriting it, but the symbology got mixed in my head with that of C/T and here you go: A much stronger, but shorter and more of the feel of the most excellent first rough draft, which sadly got misplaced. So here you go.

Castor/Pollux

Chapter 1: Music Box

Somewhere, a music box plays. It is a plaintive, soft melody that sounds vaguely familiar, yet not. It is something only the twins and their parents have heard. Someone they had never known had given it to them, claiming that it would play a different lullaby for every family. Whatever the song was called, it helped the twins sleep, so it was left in their room, playing it's sleepy notes.

The twins slept, dreaming pleasent dreams of games none could ever play on Earth while waking. A long way from there, shadows gathered, seeking the silence of their lullaby. The music box was made almost entirely of blown glass. The panels were blue, laced with black, the trim on the rounded edges silver swirled with green like a strange candy cane and in the front panel at center was a red starburst with a swirled dot of white and grey in it's heart. Within was a silk of the lightest lavender and a dancing ballerina that looked like it was from The Firebird with jewels on her bodice.

Their parents had found out that the jewels were 100% real.

Elena sat in the kitchen, listening to the music, drinking her coffee, looking tiredly at the clock. 2:30. "Ugh... this is my third pot..." She groaned. "Why, oh why can't I sleep...? This usually makes me drop like a fly..."

She got up to make some more and...

...The shadows wrapped themselves together, a shining jewel of a different sort in their reach...

...she walked down the length of the house, toward a barely opened door...

...music playing ever so softly....

...the door opening...

...the jewel was ever so close...

...Elena stood a moment, poised and looking at her beautiful daughters...

...the shadows reaching, focusing harder...

...around and around goes the firebird ballerina...

...she turned around and saw the music box, slowly winding down. She gently closed the top, and exited, the melody now gone. "Now why in the world did I do that?" She wondered.

Cali and Polly were racing, trying to catch each other. Somehow, Cali looked more elegant and graceful, while Polly looked more wild, though they were identical twins with identical haircuts. Each would try to catch eachother in the air, but each time one would grab hold of the other, they would turn into smoke. Such is the logic of dreams. Only the fact that both were in the same dream is relevant.

Finally, Cali caught Polly's ancle and smiled. "You're it!"

Polly didn't answer, her face had gone slack. "Cali..." Her mouth didn't move, but it was Polly's voice. "Help.... me...!" The voice was strained, halting like a bad internet connection.

"Pol!" She screamed, trying to hold on as her sister was covered by shadows.

"LET GO!" Polly screamed in panic.

She was thrown off by lightning from seemingly nowhere. The shadows began racing into the distance in the dreamscape, a soul captive in their grasp, leaving Cali, frozen in fright, close to awaking and then...

...Cali awoke, to find Polly gone in body and screamed long and loud, unable to stop or explain.

I like it. It's creative and different so props to you for that.

This bit, the quoted bit. Is really rushed though. Perhaps adding more detail would make this a little easier to understand.

Other than that, though, it's great.
