The big 3 "No" topics....

In a lot of workplace training, they tell you, no matter how friendly you are with your colleagues, these are three topics that aren't to be talked about.

The reason? Rather simple, really. People find them to be the most easily offensible topics if you have a different view and belittle theirs.

If I discussed politics with a Republican, I would offend them.

If I discussed religion with a Christian, I would offend them (And have MANY times)

If I discussed sex with a gay man or woman, or even with some straight women or men, I may offend them.



Why is it that these seem to be the 3 most traversed topics in this forum, then? Not that I'm complaining, because I'm quite a hard person to offend (Outside of stupidity, I find that to be the largest insult)

So... I don't really know what my point was.

How about....

How offensive do you find these three topics, if at all? What are your stances on politics, sex, and religion, how strong are you on these stances, and how offended are you at others who do not share your views?

Let's keep from flaming. A bit of debate is always a good thing, name calling and bashing aside. If, for any reason, whoever the current ID mod is, or an s-mod or Cesar, feels this is a bad thread, feel free to close it.


As for myself, sex, I'm personally straight, however I see nothing wrong with gays, lesbians, or bisexuals. It's their love, let them share it how they wish.

Politics, I'm a Democrat, I suppose. I'm mostly against the Republican views, as I do not agree with them. Abortion is a large one here, as I'm pro-choice.

Religion.... I'm none. Against it, really. My views on religion are that it's simply a way for man to explain the unexplainable. The moral stories to learn from the bible and the 10 commandments (some of them) aren't all bad, but the core of religion it's self, to me, is bull.

I'm Agnostic. Born Catholic, then upon further research and environment, I found Agnosticism to be best for me, even though I was forced upon Confirmation. Besides, Agnostica sounds way cooler than Christmas.

And, as far as politics, I don't give a shit about any of that. If it affects me, then I'll start voting, but so far, it doesn't do shit for me, so I don't pay attention to it.

And, sex? Well, I'm bi, but I don't particularly care about it either. Love is love, let it be.

I'm freaking TIRED of seeing the religion threads. Seriously. Get over it people! We all believe different things, and I think we've also proven that people arn't going to budge from their opinons.

But still... the threads keep going and going with people basically posting the same recycled words again and again, and again and again! If it were up to me (which it is not) I would have those threads closed. I have no idea what new angle they're going to come out with next. Aside from flaming each other for all of our different opinons.

That's my big beef. It bugs me that people can't just accept what others believe. No. They have to go on and on about how naive you are, or how uninformed you are, blah blah blah. I try to avoid those threads now.

I don't mind discussing politics. It's hard to offend me because again, I'm of the opinon that people are allowed to follow/believe what they want. So who cares if they're a republican or a liberal or a New Democrat or Bloq Qubecois? So long as someone doesn't try to change my beliefs, then I'm kosher.

Sex? Hahahaha no that doesn't offend me either. I mean.. how could it? Unless yeah the gay thing bugs me. THey're not hurting people so what's the harm? But again, people and their opinions.

But truthfully, if everyone just allowed people to voice their opinions, and not have anything to say about it, then this forum would be quite boring. So I just avoid the topics that annoy me. As most people do.

Well then, let's start from the top.


Religion

I have nothing against any religion. My beef is with the people who constantly use religion to explain themselves without ever having any solid opinions of their own. And, like Tiffany, I'm sick and tired of seeing religion being brought into almost every single topic here in the ID forum. It's ridiculous. If it's not a religious topic, quit using religion to back up your points! Think for yourselves!!!

As for my personal religious beliefs... what everyone else calls "Greek Mythology," I call actuality. Of course, I'm one of very few polytheistic people, and I don't ever expect anyone to think the way I do, let alone even let me explain myself. You'd be surprised how many people tell me to fuck off when they ask about my religious beliefs and I start to tell them.


Politics

Liberal. I don't necessarily want to say "Democrat" because there's a difference between the two. In most cases, I will vote Democratic Party for most positions, but I don't always like or trust the candidates. Of course, trusting politicians is a whole other story, but you can generally tell who the seedier of the bunch are.


Sex

I'm not really qualified to give any real opinions on the matter. My sex life is nonexistant, so I live vicariously through others. But hey, it doesn't offend me or anything like that. I feel that the strongest birth control is abstinence, but if people want to have sex, I'll support them so long as they're doing so safely. People just have to realize that mistakes can still happen, no matter how many condoms you wear or pills you take.

Religion and I have never been on good terms with each other. I have been to Church a few times, but it never really interested me. I used to go to a little Church hangout with a friend of my brother’s, but that never panned out either. I am, for lack of a better term, agnostic. However, I am extraordinarily fond of what Cesar mentioned. The “Greek Mythology’ bit, polytheism and whatever. It may not make an incredible amount of sense to be an agnostic that enjoys polytheism over monotheism, but it works for me. I find the belief in a single God to be.. Well.. trite. Although I won’t disrespect anyone because they have different views than me. I am open minded enough to listen to all sides of the argument despite my own beliefs. Or lack thereof.

Politics are something I have never been too involved in. Less so than even religion. In fact, I don’t know a damn thing about them. Basics, sure, but I don’t understand a lot of the categories. I am “Undefined” if you will. I will probably not vote until I believe that I am well enough versed in politics so as I can understand a good portion of what ever candidate is talking about. And I can never say when that will happen for sure, as Politics tend to put me into a coma.

Sex. I am a straight guy without a fondness for people sticking things up my poop chute, but I have no problem with people sticking things up other people’s chutes. Lesbians are cool too, but “I’m a guy, of course I believe that!” The thing I don’t get is these.. Transgender folks. Or the people who want to be someone else. I’m not completely against it, but it confuses the bloody hell out of me.

Like Tiffany and Cesar, I really hate it when people bring up religion as their main argument to any given subject. It seems a tad ignorant to me to fall back completely on one thing even if you have the strongest faith in the world. “This or that is wrong because the Bible says so.” does not make a lick of sense to me, but I wasn’t raised in any sort of religious household.

Religion. As far as I'm concerned, there is no right or wrong religion. People can believe whatever they want to believe. The only thing that makes me angry is when people insist that their religion is the only correct way to believe and refuse to listen to other peoples' ideas. I'm more than willing to listen to someone's ideas on religion just as long they're not trying to impose their ideas on me. However, like I said, when someone starts trying to tell me that their religion is the only way you're supposed to think, it bothers me.

Politics. I try to stay away from this topic mainly because I've no idea about it. I don't study into it and I get the feeling that whatever I say is going to be horridly incorrect.

Sex. I've got no problem being in a conversation about sex. Normally, I won't talk about my own sex life, but if other people want to talk about theirs, more power to them. If someone asks me about it and I'm in a comfortable environment I'll talk, but I don't talk about it with people I don't know.

Religion - Well, religion is religion. I believe in a religion called Justinism.( My name is Justin, hence Justinism. ) Its sort of a mix of all religions. Some parts kept in, some thrown out. I believe in god yes, but no particular version of him/her. More of a higher power than a "god" actually. Its very hard to describe...Anyways. religion is always touchy for most people because most have a hard time accepting the fact that people have different views. Most are so set in their ways that they refuse to listen to, or even acknowledge someone else's point of view. Nature of the beast I supppose. I have never understood the fanaticism of religion though. Why people go to war and kill people for it is beyond my comprehension.... Oh well. Hail Justinism.

Politics - ( see above statement ) More or less the same thing. Most people cant accept other's points of view, so drama ensues. I dont get it... I consider myself to be a moderate that leans to the left. I am more democratic w/ most of my political opinions, but every now and then I have a conservative viewpoint also. I tend to vote on the side of humanity as opposed to singular prosperity, so I am more liberal at the same time...Its all a game when you break it down anyways. The people will always find a way.

Sex - Yes please. Discussions on sex do no not bother me at all. Perfectly natural thing. If we weren't supposed to have sex, "god" wouldnt have given us hormones and such wonderful genitalia. Its a part of life, and I am quite happy we were given such a fruitful gift.... As far as sexuality, its all the same in the end. I am 100% straight, but I do not have a single bad thing to say against peole that are gay. Its still Tab A into Slot B.

Religion... I've made my ideas about religion fairly clear in my previous posts. I honestly hate to see it when perfectly good (and non-related!) topics get trashed because someone brings in religion and goes off on a tangent. I'm not exactly a fan of organized religion, and that's basically that. I don't really think i'll be posting in any more religion threads, because I just get frustrated.

Politics... I'm with Lai Lai Hei, I have certain core beliefs and opinions, but hell if I can back my shit up.. XD Seriously though, I'm more of a "liberal" than a "conservative", but I have beliefs that go both ways. I don't mind politics talk, because with a bit of research you can back your stuff up (most times..), Unlike religious topics.

Sex... I'm a human, just like everyone else. Sex doesn't bother me. I will take part in sex discussions, but many times too many people find them offensive, and inevitably the kids come into the topics and start making stupid comments that totally ruin the flow of the thread.

Religion: Atheist. It is the only belief that works for me. I refuse to believe in these men up in the sky or in the clouds or Xenu. It doesnt make logical sense.

Politics: Libertarian. The only thing I stray from is their position on abortion. They are pro-choice, while I am pro-life.

Sex: I like it. The world would be better if it was discussed more often. But some of my conservative values come up when I see little kids discussing and partaking in it.

Religion: I am like most people with this as I don't mind as much hearing about them providing they do not try and impose that it is the be all and end all of everything. I find christianity rather boring as I was surrounded with it during my childhood years and it just didn't feel quite right.

Politics: As I don't really discuss much politic's I do not see it as a major problem, I tend to be more on the "right" side of things. I like the idea of a Democracy but I highly doubt it could work, I hate communism and Capatilism and I guess I would say I am a National Socialist.

Sex: I have nothing against discussion about sex providing they don't go on and on about their so called adventures. I think a lot of people who discuss it tend to overexaggerate but I never buy into it. I am quite traditional when it comes down to it and I don't really want to hear about perverts, homosexuals and the like. But as long as it's not too stupid then I have nothing against it.

Religion and Politics

I bunch these two together because they usually influence each other. Most people who have strong religious (particularly monotheist religions) beliefs will use their religion to influence their political views.

I find this to be quite irritable. It sickens me when they claim "all homosexuals are sinners" or "all non-believers burn" when they have no emperical evidence to proove such claims. It is quite insensitive of them to preach when it could damage one's self esteem and do so quite drastically.

Sex

Sex is something that should be discussed openly and shouldn't be looked down upon as a perversion when it is nothing of the sort. I do, however, have my limits. Zoophiles and furries creep me out big time and the animals would probably object to the offenders if they were capable of speech.
