Negative reps

Not that I’m planning on dishing out negative reps, but I was wondering what, by the forums standard is considered an inappropriate reason to give someone a negative rep and what is appropriate??

That's the whole point of it. You say 'no thanks' on your own terms, not the forum's terms.

That is mostly correct, I guess. But a more accurate answer would be, that you don't do it when you're doing it to harass, flame, spam or otherwise do it for a reason that has no point other than you don't like or hate said individual. As long as you don't do it for an empty reason like that you should be fine. That would be the times that it is wrong to be doing it.

As always if you have issues or complaints about an individual taking it in your own hands is not the way. You notify the staff. But if you just disagree with their point or think it was unhelpful or whatever you're fine in doing it. So long as you aren't making it personal you should be fine.

There's really know rule about when or why you can give negative reputation or 'No Thanks'.

But the way most people use it, is not because they disagree with someone (that's what discussions are for), but when they consider someone's post to be out of order, not contributing to the subject or even intentionally pissing people off.

You can give negative rep for anything really, but most people won't appreciate it if you do it simply because they have different opinions or beliefs.
