..Yes. You can. PS1 controllers can be used on PS2s, and PS2 controllers can be played on PS1s. They're backwards compatible.
But.. you know, you could have just experimented. =D But hey, now ya know. ^_^ Go ahead and give it a shot. Good luck~!

Wow. I never knew that...
Here I bought a new PS2 controller when one of mine broke, when I had like 4 PS1 controllers.... Thanks Piro. I feel dumb now.

Haha, don't feel dumb. I thought that same thing until I tried, haha. But I have to buy new controllers anyway. Both my PS1 controllers are kinda in bad shape. My original grey one is kinda okay, I guess, but my transparent one's X button doesn't work. Heh.
I only have one PS2 controller as it is anyway. >>;
