Dreamcast..AWESOME or PIECE OF ****?

Here i'm designing a poll and discussion to address one of my favorite systems, the Sega Dreamcast. Yes I know one can't argue that the dreamcast was extremely unsuccessful (sega really couldn't get the console thing right could they? ) But on the contrary..i think the dreamcast is an awesome system with a top notch library of games.

So why do you ask do i love the dreamcast so much?

Maybe for one it's because it was so unsuccesful, thus allowing me to buy a new copy of the system for 50 bucks. On that same note, new games could cost anywhere from 10-20 bucks, used games being even less. In addition, the dreamcast didn't have to be MODed which meant i could download and burn dreamcast games to my hearts content. Yeah so basically i have a million dreamcast games.

Maybe it was because it was the first 128 bit console, and though it might not compare to the current next gen systems, i think it's graphics still hold up today and i continue to be impressed with games like Shenmue. Or possibly i liked it because it was the first console to go online, with titles like Phantasy Star Online, Quake III, Alient Front Online, Ooga Booga, etc. Also, it had 4 player support out of the box, like the nintendo 64, so it was great for multi player games. Not only that but it had great support for it's accessories (keyboard, mouse, light gun, morocca controllers, etc)

But most of all, the reason why i love the dreamcast is though sega hasn't had much luck in the console market, to me they continue to be one of the most innovative game desingers on the planet, and dreamcast truely does have a great library of games I mean they really got their bases covered here in every genre..if you want..

Action/Platformer - Sonic Adventure 1/2, Rayman 2, Jet Grind Radio, Resident Evil Code: Veronica, Headhunter, Spiderman, Wild Metal, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Sword of the Berserk: Gut's Rage, Deep Fighter, Shadow Man, MDK2, etc.
Adventure Shenmue, Floigan Brothers, Draconus, Shenmue II, etc.
RPG - Skies of Arcadia, Grandia II, Record of Lodoss War, Silver, Evolution 1/2
Shooter - Unreal Tournament, Outtrigger, Quake III, Bangai O, Ikaruga, Soldier of Fortune, Fur Fighters, Rainbow Six, RS: Rogue Spear, Mars Matrix, Confidential Mission
Fighting - Dead or Alive 2, Soul Calibur, Virtua Fighter 3tb, KOF 2000, KOF 99/Dreammatch, Last Blade 2, UFC, Ready to Rumble Boxing, Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves, Guilty Gear X, Project Justice, Virtua On, Street Figher Alpha 3, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, every capcom VS. game in existance (i think), etc.
Racing - Daytona USA, Metropolis Street Racer, Vanishing Point, Test Drive Les Man, Tokyo Extreme Racer 2, San Fransisco Rush 2049, Sega GT, Wacky Races, Looney Toon Space Race, Sega Rally 2, Trickstyle, Hydro Thunger, etc
Sports - Sega's 2k sports line (NHL, NBA, NFL, World Series Baseball, Tennis), NBA Hoopz, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1/2, NFL Blitz 2001, Sega Marine/Bass Fishing, Tee Off Golf, Virtua Tennis, NBA Showtime
Arcade Fun - Cannon Spike, Zombie Revenge, Virtua Cop 2, House of the Dead 2, Crazy Taxi 1/2, etc.
Multi Player - Powerstone 2, Virtua Tennis/Tennis 2k2, Ooga Booga, Phantasy Star Online, Fur Fighters, Alient Front Online, Bomberman Online, Spawn, Quake III, Unreal, Outtrigger, etc.
Puzzle - Sega Swirl, Bust-A-Move 4, Worms World Party, Wetrix, Chu Chu Rocket
Random - Seaman, Samba Di Amigo (a game with MORRACA controllers? Sega i love you), Space Channel 5, Sega Smash Vol 1, etc.

so what's everyones opinion on Sega's failed system (or one of their failed systems )? And why do you think it failed so miserably?

I totally loved the DC, and got one of my own. I mainly used it for fighters. I didn't have many games for it. Just Capcom vs SNK 1 and 2. And Marvel Vs Capcom 2, and Last Blade 2.

I think it bombed because it was ahead of its time and people were skeptical about it and were kinda 'whoa, wtf?' about it.

Though, I do have MVC2 and CVSNK 2 for the PS2. The PS2 is my new Fighter console, but that's another story for another time.

At first when the DC came out, I didn't like it because I heard the AI had a mind of its own or something, it was stupid. I learned to love it, though. I think I had a love for fighters ever since DC.

... I wanna play Virtua On. XD

Totally agree with you.

I've never been THAT big of a fan of fighting games (I played a little Mortal Kombat/Street Fighter on my SNES but that was about it) until i got the dreamcast. Basically i saw the huge collection of fighting games and because everything was so cheap i was like "Hey, why not them a try?" I guess it was nice that Sega was involved with the arcade games so porting all the fighting arcade classics was an extremely easy task.

I immediately fell in love with Soul Calibur. God the graphics at the time were AMAZING (even a huge upgrade from the already pretty looking arcade version) and i really couldn't find a fault with the game. I had never spent so much time with a fighting game, getting all the secrets, playing through with all the different characters, etc. Plus playing 1 on 1 battles with my buds, god i loved Yoshimitsu and Mitsarugi. I'd let them get my health down and bam! suicide time time with Yoshimitsu, that was the ultimate finishing move.

Then there was Dead or Alive 2 which i spent a hell of a lot of time with..kinda the first of the revampled look for the series. Another great game..though maybe the girls were a lot of the appeal. And for all the perverted DOA fanboys...in the japanese version of the game, you can see Kasumi naked!

Then of course playing all the VS. games were always a blast..i loved the Marvel VS. Capcom games especially. To me, the DC serves as the ultimate fighting game console. The only series they are really missing is Tekken.

I don't want to suggest illegal content..but access to dreamcast games is extremely easy if you know what you are doing and burning games is as well. Though maybe not so much now? Not sure. I'm positive you could find Virtua On though, i have a copy of the game myself. There's def a lot of great games besides the fighting games to check out

To me, i would have bought the dreamcast just to play Shenmue and Skies of Arcadia..and Jet Grind Radio. Those are my three favs rite there.

Ah yes. The Dreamcast. I still have my Dreamcast. I can say I liked it the short time it was around. Shenmue by far is one of my all time favorite games. Too bad I don't have an Xbox so I can play Shenmue 2. Soul Calibur and Skies of Arcadia are also favorites of mine.

Well actually..Shenmue 2 was originally released on the DC, though not here in the states. Though there is an english copy of the game released in europe..and if you have the right boot disc, you can buy a copy and play it on your dreamcast. Though now that might be really hard to find. Though you could probably find it to download..but that might be really tough game to find too.

My friend actually lent me a burnt copy (that was his brothers), and from what i remember you actually load your savegame from the previous Shenmue then it basically takes over from when the game left off. I was not too far into the game, maybe an hour or so at the most. My friend's brother found out he lent it to me though and demanded it back. So i never got to finish it, and never got a copy myself.

and from what it seems now..they aren't going to finish the Shenmue tale. They were supposedly working on Shenmue III for the xbox years ago..but now maybe the xbox 360 but i haven't heard any announcments. There is a Shenmue Online in japan though

i like how many people are voting for dreamcast as awesome..though 1 said it sucked. These people have to show their faces and say why!

Thumbs down ok dreamcast is overrated but it was alright bitches

i was stuck playing this shity system when i was 6years old untill i was 11 and i got so ****ing tired of it. but throught my years of gaming i would have to say that one of the best fighting games that i was entertained by was on the dc it was capcom vs snk and i think that game is the only game that came out from the dc that was worth playing with some exceptions. no offense to all of you dreamcast finatics. i also love emperials on starwars a new hope for nintendo which if they came out with that for the dreamcast than i would not think it was a total piece of shit thus liking it better thus saying so on this post.

Alright, i put in an "uhh" vote, because now that i think about it, i never got to play a Dreamcast, but i did see my friend playing his. Yes, graphics were pretty cool for its time, and it had internet straight outa the box if i remember right, it was a pretty revolutionary system. Now, the things that brought it down were that the PS2 and all those other systems came out afterwards with better stats all around and slowly but surely dominated the gaming industry and made Dreamcast sales plummit into the ground. revolutionary, yes, good game collection, i guess, but the lacking hardware is what brought Sega to its knees and made them just a video game developer after that.

Ha it's cool, i guess you could def get sick of it if that was all you were playing for so long. What games did you play/have though? Trust me there are a lot of great games out there for the Dreamcast.

I def agree with the two opinions why the Dreamcast failed. Really to me, it's really not that bad of a thing for I like sega as a game developer more anywayz. My only regret is that the dreamcast didn't stick around a little longer to maybe see some more quality releases (maybe a port of PANZER DRAGOON SAGA?) ooooh that would have been greeaaaaat. On that same note, it sux the sega saturn failed so miserably as well, for i never got a chance to play either Panzer Dragoon Saga OR Shining Force 3. Both were supposedly great rpgs (Panzer Dragoon Saga in particular is considered to the best rpg for a sega system, and many feel that it is a better 32 bit rpg than FF 7)

i played a few games on the system and thought they were really good for there time. the only thing i no about dreamcast is that it was everywhere then it was no where it was like it disapeared. besides that i think the system was cool.

one of the games i played was bass fishing and i thought it was kind of cool. (thats the only time ive played a game like that)
