Best 16 bit RPGs
Here i designed a thread to address the topic of what you think are the best 16 bit rpgs and why. You can give your number one if you want, or your top 10 or whatever. I designed a poll to go with it that i thought represented some of the better rpgs though i know there are A LOT more out there so feel free to say you favorite if it's not on the list.
*NOTE: IF YOU CHOOSE A SERIES, TELL WHICH ONE AND WHY

Remember, if you choose a series, remember to tell WHICH ONE. Would it be, IV, V, or VI?

Earthbound...Oh my god...
Well, it would in my book come down to Star Ocean & Final Fantasy. I'd go with Final Fantasy if the storyline for Star Ocean 2 weren't so amazingly brilliant. Sorry, people...I'm not a heretic..yet. =] |

I'm sorry but Chrono Trigger pwns all the 2D Final Fantasies. The first time I played that game, I couldnt stop playing it. Not until I had everything I could get, every side-quest done, everything completed. That game was just freaking amazing.

Final Fantasy VI - Great storyline with a lot of unexpected plot twists, a good range of great characters all with at least some backstory and a role to play in the story, a fantastic villain, great gameplay with the abilities and Esper system and some brilliant work by Nobuo.
Chrono Trigger is a very close second though. |

I definitely respect that answer, FF VI is my fav final fantasy and my number two spot in this category. It was really a hard decision for me between the two, but i think Chrono Trigger to me represents everything good about an RPG, and i think nothing else can really stand against it.
I think it excels in every category from it's awesome graphics (possibly the best on the SNES? A huge step up from FF VI with extremely colorful and detailed character models, gorgeous background and locations, great animations and bosses), STORY (wow..time travel. this whole thing was revolotionary for it's time), characters (I know VI excels here too though), amazing battle system, music (Mitsuda/Uematsu colab ? Though mostly Mitsuda, and he is the one that really shines and makes the soundtrack), not to mention the Dream Team. To me this stands as the best colab in gaming, taking some of the best from the rpg business. Something that i doubt could ever be done again, especially in this day and age. With Sakaguchi gone from Square, and the entire squareenix camp shook up, I doubt if we'll ever see a new Chrono title. Which is a shame because I like the Chrono games more than FF series

As do I man. I was so sad when they canceled the third (technically fourth) chrono game a few years ago.

I know, i heard they only got ride of the trademark here in the US though and not the japanese one. I wonder what that means? hmmm
Speaking of 4 games, have you played radical dreamers? If you can get past the fact that it's like a text rpg kind of thing..it really's interesting if you are interested in the stories at all. Especially with all the different endings.

Yeah I played Radical Dreamers a couple years ago. It was very interesting. Something that was completely different for me.

shining force changed my life. there's never been a tactics RPG (well i guess i don't really know, there's many i haven't played) that was able to be a tactics game, but still capture that magical wonder of a massively adventurous rpg. instead of points on a map and missions, you would have to clear entire armies standing between you and the next town in a zelda like overworld. there were tons of characters too - many that you could miss as well, which is always a good thing in an rpg. i didn't play SNES when i was a kid - i was a SEGA boy %100 through and through after replacing my NES with a Genesis in '92.
so my vote goes to shining force! hooray!
