Fan made RPG games

Does anyone have an opinion on fans creating sequels/prequels/remakes of populer RPG titles? There are obvious legal issues with these games..but that aside, it can be fun for fans to try to recreate some of their favorite games.

Most rpg fan games that i have found..honestly are just plain horrible. There are quite a few that standout to me though. Here are some of my favs..feel free to tell some of your own personal favs.

1. Chrono Trigger: Resurrection - I guess this isn't technically a game in any way. It was in progress though. Basically some fans of Chrono Trigger were planning on recreating 10 scenes from Chrono Trigger in glorious 3D. Square found out about the whole thing though and it had to be shut down. 2. Ocarina of Time 2D - This developer of this game is attempting to recreate The Ocarina of Time in the 2D SNES Zelda style fashion. There is no download able demo as of yet but there are screenshots. This looks very promising to me. Go here to check out the sitehttp://monkeypro.net/oot2d/
3. Earthbound: Memoirs This is a fan based game being called "Earthbound 2". Unlike Mother 3 the official sequel to the game this is a direct sequel following Ness and his comrads from the original Earthbound. The game is still early in development but there is a brief playable demo found here http://67.43.2.249/~mygodiss/devel/eb2/EBM.zip. So far this game looks very promising as well, faithfully recreating the look and feel of the original. I'll have to play the final to see what the story is about exactly though..
