Square on the PS
There are a lot of lesser known RPGs(besides the Final Fantasys, Chronos, and Xenogears) that square released for the Playstation. a few good ones come to mind:
1. Brave Fencer Mushashi - This game was really easy to love. It was one of first games played that had so much spoken dialogue which i really liked. It really helped give the game lot of personality. I also loved it's real time action rpg style battles. A great combination of platforming, exploration, and action rpg combat. Anyone play the sequel for PS2? 2. Threads of Fate - similar in gameplay to the game above. I think a big reason I enjoyed this game so much is because it reminded me heavily of the secret of mana games. 3. Parasite Eve - the RPG/survival horror game. I enjoyed this game because it took my love of the Resident Evil series and threw in some RPG elements for good measure. THe real time battle system was a hell of a lot fun, very similar to Vagrant Story's. Good storyline, beautiful cinematics, plus it was just plain creepy at times. I didnt finish playing its sequel, i was too dissapointed to see that almost all of the RPG elements were thrown out the window. |

I loved Brave Fencer Musashi (hence my username
)... something about it was reminiscent of early Zelda games while adding more humor and other things that Zelda never did. As far as I'm concerned, Square OWNED the PlayStation. Games like Einhander, Ehrgeiz, Chocobo Racing, Bushido Blade, etc. all snuck under the radar and crushed their competetion in terms of gameplay (if not sales).

Haha yea love the name for sure! My question to you is this: Have you played the sequel? Due to my love of the original, i've been wanting to check it out but it hasn't gotten a lot of good reviews so that kinda makes me think otherwise.
And yes Square did dominate on the PS for sure. Though i don't own any of the Bushido Blades titles for the PS, my friend owns them both as well as Kengo: Master of Bushido for the PS2. ..and i really want to find a copy of Einhander. I rented it once back in the day but haven't beaten it yet. |

Samurai Legend Musashi isn't a bad game, per se. It's not half as good as Brave Fencer, but it's definitely entertaining and overall in the same spirit as it's predecessor. The only real problem I had with it is that the music was rather iffy. Surf rock doesn't really fit well with a medieval samurai adventure.

Parasite Eve 2.
Holy SHIAT! I ****ing love this game. I've finished it more time than I can count. Totally orgasmic gaming experience with -- admit it -- pretty good graphics. Aya Brea was hot (no, I am not a lesbian), and the characters were fantastic. Love the game and everything about it.

I will admit that it did have a lot of good things going on for it (pretty good graphics being one), I think I was just letdown to see that the battle system from the previous game was thrown out the window in favor of real time combat.
Basically Parasite Eve II more or less felt like another Resident Evil clone (right down to the annoying control system!) Not that that's a horrible thing, I love the Resident Evil series in fact..I think maybe part of the reason i put it down was also because I had just finished playing both Resident Evil 3 AND Fear Effect. Maybe i was just sick of playing survival horror games i own the game so mite always go back and pick it up. oh yea..and Aya is definitely sexy

I definately prefer Aya with shorter hair. And her dress sense was definately more casual. I think games need more casual elements, rather than having really stunning sexy women in games. It's nice to have SOME element of conservative!
And so as not to be a hypocrite, I must throw away all of my short skirts. ![]() I must admit, though, I don't really play RPG's much. I really love horror games (Silent Hill being my favourite series), so Parasite Eve 2 is the only one I can really name... sorry. ^_^;

Yeah Parasite Eve was a great game. I really liked the second one too. The storyline seemed great and I like the how square tried doing the horror game gig.

I honestly wouldn't mind seeing a Parasite Eve 3 for the PS3 or something though i haven't beaten 2 so i don't know how the story would go or if it would even make sense to have another game in the series.

Parasite Eve (1 and 2) is an awesome game that is really under-rated IMO. It has a great storyline, great characters and is pretty freaky in places!

Well i'm glad to see we I have some fellow Parasite Eve fans.
Quote:
Even in RPGs the girl role is usually the same..the only few characters that to me break this mold are Terra and Celes from FF VI. I thought Aya did the same thing, she was sexy yet at the same time she could KICK YOUR ASS. That's my kind of woman right there. ![]()

Parasite Eve I and II are great under-rated RPGs for the PSone IMO, number one was a nice little RPG set in modern times and with a female lead who was in the police force, you don't see that in RPGs too often. A great game. The second one was sort of Resident Evil meets RPG, the gameplay felt like Resident Evil and general survival-horror games and the way you equipped different weapons and armour made it feel like more RPG like.
Another great game is Grandia, not under-rated but in general speakings of RPG, Grandia is a classic. I can't say the same for number 2. |
