Older PSX games not working on the PS2.

Has anybody else encountered this problem? It seems that old games, such as Alien Trilogy and older FF's don't seem to work on my PS2.

Over the years, I have had three PS2's, and each time after a while, older games for the PSX stopped working on it.

I'm not sure if this issue is bought up anywhere, if Sony made it clear that this might happen by using older games... but meh, just wondering if anybody else has been having the same issue.

It seems to have happened with all of my PS2's as well, which is why I pose the question to do with if anybody else had been having these problems. Meh, I also pose it as a warning to others who use PSX games a lot with a PS2 console.

Anyway, any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

So far I didn't notice. I played the older FFs, they seem to work fine.

I've had the same issue, though I'm not sure if you're having the same problems I am. Anyway, after some inspecting I found that my Lens on the PS2 was getting worn out from the PSX games. After a while, the lens would start hitting the discs (literally jumping out of it's place when trying to play a PSX game) and making this annoying sound and the games just wouldn't boot up; but oddly enough, PS2 games seem to work fine.

I'm not sure if changing lenses would help your problem, it could be something different. Your best bet would be to either take it to a pro mechanic or call Sony and tell em about the problem. There really is no definitive way to find out what the problem is without opening it and checking the insides. Also, a less tedious option would be to get one of those lens cleaners and run it through, see if that helps any.

Ah! Thank you! Yeah, I had the problem with the noise and stuff!

Well, that's good to know, thanks. Now maybe I can stop replacing my PS2's every year... It costs £150 - 200 everytime. Blah.

My FFIX suddenly started having trouble being read by my PS2, the movie segments skip, stop or repeat over and over, I should note that this one isn't a re-issue, the "Greatest Hits" PS1 games work fine.
Also, my other PS1 games that aren't re-issues and aren't replayed as much as FFIX, also work fine.
I'm wondering whether I should replace FFIX with a "Greatest Hits" version of it.

My FFIX no longer works on my PS2 anymore either.

Buy an old PSX. Hook that up to your TV. It'll work fine. PSX's are really cheap now as well.

Laser lenses hitting the disc? I belive that is when running CD-ROM games.
As we all know the PSX is on CD-ROM only while most and I would say all new PS2 games is on DVD with slower RPM since the read speed is so high.

I as I wrote above belive this problem is because the CD-ROM goes so fast in the drive when running, I belived that my PS2 was to lift off the first time I played a PS2 CD-ROM game on it.

Oh and a lens cleaner is perhaps not so smart, my friend used that (a long time ago) on his PS2 and it messed up his lens, the console sounded like "cick...click...click" while saying "reading disc" for a couple of seconds on all the discs before it said "ERROR can't read disc" or something....

DV, mine does that even without a lens cleaner anyway, so meh. I thought I was the only one with problems. Haha.

Nah, I sold my old PS1 because I have no more space under the TV, plus, I move that TV stand around, so I can't install extra equipment around the TV, either.

I've seen too many precautionary tales like yours around to not pay attention to them.
I'd rather not touch my PS2.

I had the same trouble as you Chez, my FF games for the PSone stopped reading on the PS2. Eventually half of my PS2 games stop reading and all of my DVDs. Well, I broke it open, well unscrewed it and got inside it. I cleaned it up really well, vacuum, cleaning alchol and it was as good as new. It now plays everything that I have without troubles.

There was a page that Shadow linked me to for cleaning your PS2. I would say if it was reading at one time and is not now, try cleaning it will do wonders.

Wow, thanks for that! I'll try it next time my PS2 goes mad because I'm playing a PSX. Luckily for me I also know basic electronics and mechanics, so if anything went wrong, perhaps I would know what to do... It'd also save me £200 a year.
