I got AC4 while I was in Iraq...not really the type of game I'm into, but still pretty good. I really liked the missiles you got towards the end that lock on and don't give up. And playing against other people with planes you configure, that's cool too.

The song in the intro to Ace Combat 5 is "Blurry" by Puddle of Mudd.
AC 5 was really my first flight game. I was playing a demo of it and decided to buy it right away. I bought the limited edition with the Hori Flight Stick bundle which was worth the money. I had so much fun playing it. The story was surprisingly very well executed. It starts of idylic in an air base off the coast of Osea where newbie pilots are being trained. Strange things happen when suspicious spy-planes are spotted and soon UAVs come snooping in. Suddenly, war breaks out and you're thrust right into the calamity. You're called on to defend Osea, then retaliate and invade Yuktobania. But slowly, the plot thickens, you realize this war was manipulated and that a third party, the Belkans are the ones causing the two superpowers to fight each other so the Balkans can attack both weakened and distracted countries. AC 5 has a nice variety of missions from escorts, dog-fights, surface strikes and air support, survailence, and the mandatory flying inside canyons and other tight spaces. Some of my favorite missions: Mission 3: Narrow Margin This is the first real mission where you start to realize the seriousness of the story and the game. Yuktobania has openly declared war on Osea and launched a surprise attack on one of Osea's ports where some of Osea's naval feet are stationed. You, as Blaze are made captain of your squadron against your will since the previous captain was shot down. Your mission is to protect the naval fleets including the flagship the aircraft carrier, Kestrel from enemy air attacks and help them escape port St. Hewitt and out of the bay. Enemy aircrafts swarm the bay as your squadron and other NPCs fight back. The mission consists of mostly dogfights and engaging enemies to distract them from the Osean fleet. The whole damn mission was chaotic. In addition to having to quickly take down targets one after another while still following the fleet and guarding it, you'll hear background chatters over radio. From damage reports, friendly fires, and just plain panics from hit ships going down. Along with the great music, the radio chatter really adds to the chaotic and rushed feel of this mission. Once the Osean fleet escapes the port, your mission objective changes to destroying the Yuktobanian naval blockade (Those Yuks don't mess around.) at the mouth of the bay. Mission 6: White Bird (Part 1) The Yuktobanians have demonstrated the capability of their WMD and the Osean has decided to send an anti-ballistics weapon to space so that the Arkbird, the space ship orbiting above can shoot down the Yuktobanian's WMD from space. The Yuks realizing this, attempts to destroy the SSTO craft launch facility and the mass driver before the Osean can launch their defense weapon. Your mission is to stop the invasion which consists of C-130s dropping tanks as well as a few enemy fighter planes. If you're smart, you'll shoot down the C-130s to prevent further tanks from dropping safely. But if you pay too much attention to the multiple C130s that take awhile to kill, the enemy tanks that are already on the ground will overpower the facility's defense and you lose. So, you gotta assist the ground defense while trying to ordering your wingmen to cover you from enemy fighters all while the facility is trying to launch the cargo. As a last ditch effort, the Yuks launch a volley of missles at the facility and you gotta shoot them down. Since they are launching from two directions, that will be fun. Mission 7: Front Line Yuktobanians air and naval fleet are spotted advancing toward Sand Island Air Base. They're here to finish the job from a few missions back where you successfully defended the base. So, you and a bunch of newbie pilots the Osean Air Force scraped up are to intercept the Yuks. The mission starts off normally over open waters against both surface and air targets. But suddenly, the Yuks launched one of their WMD ballistic missles that wreaked havoc on you before. Fortunately, this time, you have the Arkbird watching over you and shot down the missle with it's laser. Unfortunately, if you happen to get caught in the crossfire.... So, your friendly AWACs suggests you, "dodge the lasers and the missles while still taking down the enemies." to which one of your wingmen, Chopper responses sarcastically to this tall order. You can always count on Chopper to say what you want to say but can't. The Yuks up the anti by launching multiple ballistic missles. The Arkbird can only shoot one at a time before having to recalculate the next trajectory. Because the Yuks' WMDs can wipe out anything under 5,000 feet, you must immediately ascend above that to escape unharmed. The newbies failed to do this and were destroyed. N00bs. You're forced to repeatedly ascend then descend back down to continue the attack until the Arkbird decides to end things and shoot the Yuks' sub, the Scinfaxi, which was launching the ballistic missles. Damaged, the Scinfaxi is forced to surface where you take the opportunity to bomb it to Hell. Mission 9: Lit Fuse Finally, retribution! This is the first offensive mission where you are to assist and provide air support as the Osean army invades the Yuktobanian coast of Bastok Penninsula. The 1st and 2nd Osean Army Battalions will land on the beach and split into four companies where you must provide cover by assisting destroying enemy ground troops and bunkers. If your ground troops are wiped out, you lose, so be alert! Of course the Yuks will fight back and try to not only attack your ground troops but you as well with enemy fighters, copters, AA guns, and SAMs. Once your ground troops advance in-land, they'll require assistance in bombing enemy fortresses. Which is always fun. This is the first offensive mission as well as attack mission where there are mostly ground targets. Mission 11B: Reprisal Yuktobanian commando force launched a terrorist attack on the college town of Bana. The terrorists detonated nerve gas all over the city. As the city is being evacuated, you are to drop gas neutralizers all over the cities. You'll hear local authorities reporting where the gases are as well as evacuation efforts. Once you clear all the gasses, you'll hear authorities reporting sightings of the terrorists escaping by vehicle and ask you to follow and keep constant aerial visual even though you can hear the news.... So, you must follow them, and just for kicks shoot the items they drop from their van to reduce their load. Finally, enemy copters appear to rendezvous with the terrorist so you gotta shoot down the copters with your guns. You have no missles equipped. This is one of the more unique mission. Mission 15: White Noise Your first wingmen, Edge was shot down during the last mission. She activated her locating beacon but it's weak. So, equipped with a locator, you must fly and find her using the locator once you found her, your friends, the Sea Goblin, a Navy copter unit will come in and rescue her. But things won't be easy as the Yuks also picked up the beacon's signal and are tracking Edge as well as trying to thwart the Sea Goblin's rescue efforts. This is an escort and air cover mission. Mission 16A: Desert Arrow This is an air strike mission but mostly escorting. While Osean Army ground troops mount an invasion of enemy forces and key bases, the air force is sending two squadrons of bombers to destroy enemy airstrip and HQ. You are to escort and guard the bombers as they fly towards their objective targets. So, since there's two squadrons to guard that are nowhere near each other, you'll be flying all over the place. A fast fighter is a must. Once the bombers reach their targets safely, you may assist them in bombing either the airstrip or enemy HQ. Both, if you're fast enough. The mission objective changes again as the Yuks attempt an air counter attack. You must shoot down their ECM and fuel carrier plans to force them to retreat. Enemy ECMs can jam radar and missle guidance so you need to be more careful. Mission 17: Journey Home This is a pivotal mission. It starts off as a routine fly-by over a football srtadium in November City of Osea where the Vice-President will make a speech to rally support of the war. You are to fly in formation doing sychronized maneuvers. You'll fail if you mess up too much. Once done, you are to fly around and patrol the area just in case... ...The Yuks show up. (How did they get this deep in Osea without being spotted earlier?) They swarm in and keep your squadron busy. You call for back-up but you hear over the radio that someone is belaying that order, cancelling the back-up. You continue to fight over the stadium as civilians below watch and soon protest the war, pissing off the Vice-President. Sadly, one of your wingmen gets hit. He can't eject and forced to try to land inside the football field. Instead of landing, he crashed in the field but managed to avoid the crowd by diving straight down into the field. You can hear your remaining wingmen fight back anger as they try to focus on repelling the Yuks until finally the back-ups arrived after clarification. Mission 18+: 8492nd After successfully assisting ground troops in overtaking Cruk Fortress that guards the Yuktobanian capital of Cinigrad, your squadron of three fly back to base. On the way, the mysterious 8492nd squadron of Ocean Air Force appears offering to escort and refuel you. Suddenly, two missle comes straight at you from the 8492nd squadron (which you should doidge or die) and your squardron goes, "WTF?" and then, "OMG!" as a huge volley of missles and enemy fighters appear ahead of you. Clearly these guys are out to get you and you are outnumbered. Your only choice is to continue fleeing east and avoid the countless missles and fighterrs in front and back of you. This mission will test your defensive maneuvers and if you're daring, your offensive maneuvers. You can dive down and hug the jagged mountains to help avoid missles but you better be good at flying fast while so close to the surface, else you might crash. You can also perform a nice move where if you have bogeys on your six. Wait till they launch a missle, quickly do a barrel roll (lol) slam the breaks and let the enemy overshoot you (do it right else they may crash into you) and when they are ahead trying to turn around, shoot them out of the sky and fire the afterburners to continue your escape. As you try to escape, your wingmen will figure out it was the 8492nd squadron who tried to frame you with the terrorist attacks in Bana as well as delayed the back-up order during November City. Mission 19: Final Option You are accused of being Yuk spies by your own superior. You are forced to flee Sand Island Base with dinky training planes that are unarmed. To avoid being targeted by pursuing 8492nd squadron of Osea, you fly low over a chain of islands where the magnetic field jams radars. This hurts them and you as you cannot see your wingmen and Pops, the man helping you escape on radar. You must stay close to keep a visual. Pops likes to show off and do crazy cool stunts and fly through tight valleys, and even tunnels which you must follow. The first tunnel is short and fairly roomy. But the second tunnel is long and has nice obstacles and a winding exit that begs you to crash. This is the first of two missions that do not require you to shoot anything and one of many mission that requires fine maneuvering. Mission 21: Solitaire This is the game's only covert recon mission. You alone must fly through enemy territory, avoiding detection through the many radars, and take a few photos of enemy base for analysis and evidence to prove the Belkans involvement in dragging the Osean and Yuktobanians to war. You must fly below 200 feet along the river to avoid the radars. Then take GOOD pictures of the base as described by Pops. As soon as you get near enemy base, your presense will be known so you must take the pictures while avoiding SAMs and do it fast before enemy planes take off and come after you. Once done, you simply GTFO by flying west. Mission 23: Ghosts of Razgriz My most favorite mission and the mandatory canyon mission. You are to fly through the canyon and take out enemy forces while anti-war Yuktobanians disables the Yuk's nuclear weapons and escape. The canyon has anti-air defense where if you fly above the canyon rim, missles will come at you. So, you're stuck inside the canyon where enemy planes are also trying to shoot you down. Even though this less room to avoid missles, its still possible with a highly maneuverable plan. But if your plane is also fast and you can fly fast in tight spaces, you can outrun enemy planes and avoid being targeted. The real fun begins when you clean out all the enemies and the Yuk elite squadron, Ofnir shows up for some old fashion dog fight in the canyon. You must chase them along the canyon and try to shoot all four down but these guys can really move and have the luxury of flying over the canyon harmlessly. Crashing becomes a real risk as you are trying to avoid their missles or are too focused on shooting them down to pay attention to your surroundings. Truly a fun mission. Mission 27: Aces The second to last mission. This thing has everything, ground targets, air targets, you must provide support as well as... fly through a long, narrow tunnel while being chased by your former superior and avoid CLOSING gates and incoming enemies. Fun, fun, but also frustrating as you will most likely crash in the second half of this long mission in the tunnels, forcing you to retry the whole mission. As you can see, AC 5 has lots of great missions and that's excluding the arcade mode. I'm looking forward to the prequel, Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War. |

ACE COMBAT 5 is one of my favorite games aside from the final fantasy games and metal gear solid games, it's fun to play it I have all of the planes except for the secret one I know how to get it it's just that I never get around to getting it. Then game play in this game is great and the graphics are also good.
