Shmups

A club I'm in acquired Gradius V this semester. Me and a bunch of friends started playing it and got really into it, spawning a whole new interest in shoot 'em ups. Are there any other shmup fans here who'd like to chew the fat?

The games I've gotten my hands on are Gradius V, just about every other emulatable Gradius (although 3 is the only one I've put in any quality time with), Super R-Type, R-Type III, Ikaruga (why isn't this available for any emulatable system ?), Gigawing 1 and 2, and rRootage (if you're not familiar with this one, look it up; it rocks and is the only one of the afforementioned games that is legitimately free). What other games would people who enjoy the above recommend looking into?

Also, for those who'd like to compare notes, my high score on Gradius V is just under a million. I died on the boss of stage four. I'll get past him one of these days.

Sigma Star Saga. It's a shooter AND a rpg. That's like transexual porn!

Anyways I wouldn't really know about it. I just started today.


Xbox has Panzer Dragoon Orta....speaking of which, if I can remember, Panzer Dragoon Azel was also a shooter and rpg. But that's Saturn and that's dead. I've also got some japanese game where you get more points for being as close as possible to the shots. I forgot the name so that makes that pointless.

And yeah, that's all I can really recall for the modern day. Oh, Rez. And Digital Devil Saga 2 has a THREE level shooter minigame which makes the badass game even more badass. Yeah, Jade Empire had that too but that game sucked.
