Question what system would recommend?

Okay-I'll be the first to admit that our game system is way out-dated:an old Sega Genesis..so..

My family is telling me-"we NEED a new system"-I have to agree, but I have no idea what to buy.

What would you recommend to get?

Neither of our PCs is high on the gaming scale-even though one is new...long story...so all we really play on the PC are problem solving or simple gaming--simple as in they are not high on having move around alot--stupid mouse--
we have games like CSI and Power of Chaos.

So a gaming system is in order I think.

Thanks ^_^

Jo

Yes, as a fan of the console I would recommend it. It has a wide variety of games, you can play PS1 games in it as well, the controllers are very ergonomical, and it isn't too pricey anymore.

Investing in a Playstation 2 at this point would be a waste of money. Playstation 3 is coming out early next year, but if you can find a cheap used PS2 being sold with a couple of games, then I suggest that you go for it.

You have a genesis, what's the problem? Hell, I still play my genesis, even though I have a PS2, a GCN, and a gamning quality PC. Some games just can't be beat. If you need to pick a new system, you need to ask yourself what kind of games you enjoy the most. Don't listen to the fanboys preaching thier favourite systems. Think about what kind of games you like and look at each system's gaming libraries and lastly at it's features.

He's got an incredibly valid point. At this point in time, buying one of the current gen consoles would be a waste of money. There are very few games being published for the consoles any more because of the resources going into developments for the new consoles.

Personally, I'd recommend the Nintendo Revolution, but you'd have to wait another year for that console to be released. The XBox 360 comes out very soon, and the Playstation 3 is released in the spring.

I'd go ahead and advise waiting for the PS3, since it seems like your family wants to go the Sony route. I know it's a bit of a wait, but it really would be pointless to go ahead and get a PS2 at this point, even if it would be cheaper.

He's also got an excellent point.

Sometimes I bring the NES downstairs so my mother can kick my ass at Dr. Mario. I recently got her into playing the N64 as well. My SNES, while it may not see as much use as it used to, has more hours on it than any other system in the house. My Gamecube gets a ton of playtime when friends come over, as it's got some of the greatest multiplayer games. The PS2 gets more playtime with PSX titles, like FFT and FFIX, though it sees its share of PS2 games as well.

I wholeheartedly agree.

It's the most expensive choice, but upgrade the PC for sure. Think of all the games available for PC. You can play any PC game ever if you have patches which can be found on the internet. Besides, computer games are clearly a lot cooler.

Either A Gamecube (its got great family games and multiplayer is good) or the PS2 (for its library of games, especially the greatest hits games.)

I say Dreamcast, just because I am a sega whore.

But as far as more recent systems go, for kids, gamecube is the way to go. The controller is kid-friendly, a good portion of the games are too, plus they have a decent selection of more mature titles for when the kids get to sleep.

i have to disagree with you. yes publishers are putting a lot of effort into making games for next gen systems, but with the hight price being put on all of them it will be hard for some familys to afford the new system. with the new systems not selling super fast they will continue to produce good quality games, not spectacular but good none the less. just wanted to put my 2 cents in

...I said "more" of the resources, not all of them.

But you do have a point. And it's still another six months (-ish) until the PS3 comes out. Ah hell, why not. Go ahead and buy a used PS2. Make some good use of it.

I'd still personally recommend Nintendo for its excellent multiplayerness, but that's just me.
