Final Fantasy RPG Gamemasters or players? Anyone?
I play a lot of Pen and Paper RPG (Like Dungeons and Dragons, Shadowrun, D20 Modern, Starwars) and a few years ago I came across a site that had the material to play a campaing in a Final Fantasy style world. I know that you could create a world and give it features like in the FF games, but Im laking time these days. I was just wondering if any of you have played the Final Fantasy RPG game, or a D&D campaing with a FF flavor on it and can answer me some questions.
Q: Is the sistem any good (FF RPG)? Q: How hard it is to deal with the limit break sistem? Q: Do you Know any sites that are dedicaded to that style of FF RPG gaming? Q: Do you know if someone has a site with material to play. Dont limit yourself to this questions, if you could help me with anything regarding this topic, please feel free to post. Im very interested in Gamemastering a Final Fantasy campaing here in Puerto Rico. Any help will do.

In Puerto Rico? Where? You've sparked my interest...
Anyways, the only system I know that deals FF is the Returners Game, a home-grown system using percentile dice. Currently they're on the 3rd Edition, but still on beta. I only remember a few stuff of it. --System is based on percentile rolls. Since you've played D&D, you may be familiar with DC, right? Well, their "DC" is more like beat the percentage. It has skills like D&D (and the ranks in the skill determine the minimum p-dice you should roll), it has an Advantage/Disadvantage system like GURPS, and a class system tailored to the FF worlds. --Races are extracted from all FF worlds (up to date), some races from Secret of Mana are extracted too. The class system in 2nd edition was based on "Aspects": you either were the base class, or its aspect, which it is a different class altoghether. 3rd edition is fully class-based, making the distinction between pure fighters, pure mages and hybrids. That's as far as I can remember. Any more info, go to their site. I'll PM it for you so I don't break the forum rules. |

I got a friend that is really into D&D and kinda has a FF setting in his games and lives in Mayagüez. In the UPR there him and a couple of friends play D&D almost everyday so if you don't live far from there you can PM or something and we could talk about it and maybe you could persuade them into that.
About the sites about FF-style D&D I don't really know any since I'm not that inmersed in that but there has to be something there for that. Yo tambien soy de Puerto Rico y vivo ahi asi que cualquier cosa me dices y trato de ver si conozco algo aqui. ![]()

Thanks for the info FFsaiya-jin. I checked a place that was recomended to me by T.G. Oskar. Its pretty cool. My recomendation is that anyone that read this thead and is really, I mean really into FF to visit the place and read the rules. Its a very interesting game to play. In that game you will be able to play the character you want, and it provides to play almost any class ever presented in a final fantasy game.
Here is the link if anyone is interested: www.returnergames.com

That's all well and good, but I think it would be even more fun to make your own Final Fantasy campaign. It would take some time yes, but for the most part you could use the current classes as guide lines. I once made a Warcraft campaign. A friend of mine and I worked on it for about a day and a half (that's all it took) and we created about 10 classes to use. It was fun.

That site is kinda cool. I'm gonna check it out deeply sometime tomorrow since I can't right now.

I think I know him. Doesn't he go by the name of "Kelly Mc Weed"? If then I already play with him, but he's on a kind of hiatus right now, 'cuz he wants to finish his own home-brewed campaign setting. You sound a little too familiar...
Anyways, I dislike a bit what they did for the 3rd version of Returners, especially with the Paladin and Dark Knight. They removed the ability to cast magic, and couldn't compense well. I say, if I could retrieve the 2nd edition rules, I would play the Pally and the DK from that edition, instead. Who knows, maybe they'll do a 3.5 edition like WotC.

Yeah, that's him....
He wanted to do some D&D for his friends here in San Juan so he is making one, or at least its on his mind; the only thing that's left are people to play. I've played D&D only 2 times in my life so I don't know a lot from it but I get the general idea. But the thing that is kinda overwelming is how many books are there about it, A LOT, it's really a game that has been put a lot of time making it.

As I said, he's on a 1-year hiatus until he can make the campaign setting as he likes. When you have classes, a girlfriend, and D&D DMing, you first tend the classes, then the girl, then the DMing. Thus the 1-year hiatus. He has people to play, both on San Juan and on Colegio. He just has no time. Though he said he was gonna throw some mini-adventures here and there...
And as I said, you sound too familiar... Which somewhat leads into Jin's comment: it is really hard to do a campaign based on FF. First, you have to get the closest rule system (Returners is fully based on FF, D&D being a close second). Then, play with the mechanics. But that gets complicated when you eventually have a dozen worlds, each different from each other. Besides, it all depends on whether people do really want to play it or not. You make a wonderful rearrangement to the system, make it pretty faithful to the core of the games (magic and summons, an ever present villain, a main hero with a background, the world's going into chaos, etc.) and suddenly you hear people saying "I want this to look more like FF7 and have Cloud and stuff". Then you hear other saying "No, it should be more like FF10 and have Tidus and stuff". The incongruencies just make it not fun to play, much less to remake a system with FF-tuned rules. And it is a pain in the a** to make a new RPG system from scratch. It requires time and a lot of people to make it succesful. I don't mean it is impossible, but rather somewhat improbable.

d20? Well, as far as classes, that's simple. Only thing needed is a bit more time to further develop. All the d20 system requires class-wise is tweaking the existing classes to a more FF-flavored version.
Let's see...Barbarian becomes Berzerker and replaces his Rage ability for an Auto-Berserk; Bard remains somehow the same; Cleric becomes White Mage and replaces something for it's Pray command; Druid would become Geomancer (that'll take some time to develop), Fighter remains the same; Monk adquires a gigantic face-lift (keeps Improved Unarmed Attack, flurry becomes Pummel or Repeating Fist, maybe loses Stunning Fist, replaces Wholeness of Body with Chakra, and see how you add Boost & Bear from FF4 and a long range attack); Paladin also gains a massive face-lift ('cuz it would sacrifice Smite Evil, Detect Evil, the immunities and Undead Turning for a Shield Other-esque spell-like ability at will); Ranger automatically becomes an archer; Rogue changes to Thief and loses Sneak Attack for Flee; Sorcerer and Wizard mutate and become Black Mage. From other books: Samurai loses Kiai Smite, the two weapon skill and Staredown for Coin Toss, Two Hand wielding and a bonus to AC; Ninja would receive better throwing skills and Two Weapon Fighting; Hexblade dissapears and becomes Dark Knight, losing it's curse for a draining skill... And almost all the other core classes become useless. I have my doubts on Dragoon, Blue Mage and Red Mage...should they remain core classes or become prestige classes? And that's about all I can apport...
