How do YOU pronounce "Gil"?

I always pronounced it like the girl name "Jill", only maybe without the [d] you hear in the beginning.

But I was watching an FF XII walkthrough the other day, and noticed how one of the characters in a cutscene pronounced Gil differently.

With a [g] like in "gate".

How do you guys pronounce it?
And is it a European thing to pronounce it like I do, or am I just weird?

THere's an actual name that's called Gil. And it's pronounced Gil as in Gate.

Actually, in Final Fantasy X, a character called O'aka XXIII at one point says "Gil - G as in Gate!" I've always called it that way. I sometimes tease the word with "Jill," but I've always known it a G for Gate.

I'm an exception. The way I say it just has a great ring to it, but it might be the fact that I know French (living in Belgium and all).

But me thinks I"ll stick to the fish way. It's how I said it in FFVIII.. so I will always say it like that <3

I never thought of saying Gil any way other than gills. I guess it makes sense about using a J sound if you said you are French tho, since that is the more natural way of speech for ya mate?

I don't know about you guys but I always say Gil with the g as in gate.

I've always pronounced it Gil with a G as in "guilt" or "guild". I've never heard it said any other way.

haha to be unkind to some close friends of mine....i always pronounce things like they look to me in english even if its wrong....its not really important if you can express it to another person with them understanding....but to the friend thing if you have the obvious way to pronounce it and you want to be different by pronouncing like jill(which im not saying any of you do ) you waste time and lose the point by just wanting to stand out

I say Gil as in gate, it sounds better to me. When I was younger I think I pronounced it as Jill but I was a kid. xD I suppose it doesn't matter how you say it, either way can work.

But it sounds so much better my way.
It has that ring to it. Gil (as in gill) doesn't sound fluently enough for a word as commonly used as a currency valuta would be in real life.

If someone came up to me, and stated talking Final Fantasy, and said "Gil" as "Jill", I'd think I'd missed something... >>;

Ha I actually had this conversation with someone years ago (yeah we are losers but I'm over it). He thought it was "Jill" like the name and I thought it was "Gill" like gate (or fish). We never really resolved it and I haven't seen or spoken with this person in years.

Recently I met someone named Gil (like gate). As was stated earlier in this thread, the name is pronounced that way so I guess that settles that debate. I laughed when I saw this thread.
