Question Which FF is best for a newbie?

I've been trying to play Final Fantasy. But years ago when I tried, I just got confused and quit. Plus, one time a monster popped up and scared me to death! But now, I want to give it another shot (I think I matured a bit over the years, and got smarter). But I am completely lost which one is best to start off from. I got FFXI for PC, but I find the controls confusing because I never had a PC game before. Would the PS2 version be better? (I sort of wanted to play online, is that Ok?) Which FF is best for a newbie?

I think that it would be FF 1...you learn basics from it and get all sorts of info about FF's...I started with FF 6 but it wasn't easy...then I played FF 7 and the whole materia system was new for me...I learned it along game and saw that when masterated Materia system I was more powerful than anyone else...Hardest to me was FF 8 and it's Junction system...I still don't get it very well but 'Practice makes perfect.

FFXI is best played with a gamepad. The keyboard and mouse controls of the PC version are awful.

I would recommend VII, unless you really want to start with the classics.

i would say final fantasy VIII because it was the easiest one for me they made that one a little too easy. (i think...) or the best one would be the first one if you can find it because its the first one! you cant play it correctly if you dont play it in order

Final Fantasy X. Almost obvious.

The learning curve w/ this game is ridiculous. From the beginning it more or less gives you a tutorial on how to play the game. Explains the magics, attacks, etc....

Definitely one of the best FF's, and also the easiest one to pick up and learn. Hell, even my ex-gf learned how to play it. She was dumb as rocks.

I disagree with that. While there are plot elements that make appearances in almost all of them, they're still completely separate games (with the exception of X/X-2 maybe). The only reason to play them in order would be to see how the technology and mechanics have evolved.

Final Fantasy X would probably be a good starting game. You get a lot of information during the game so you learn how to do things a lot easier. It's not a very difficult game either, I found it quite easy most of the time. It's also a great game with an excellent storyline and a nice group of characters. If not X, I would probably say VIII...I think that game is a little bit more advanced then X. VIII might take a bit of time getting used to because if the Junction system lol. It's not that hard either though.

I'd say either VII or X, honestly. Probably X moreso. Not the best of the series, but both are easy to learn and easy to play, self-explanatory, and reasonably linear so it's hard to get "lost" from what you're supposed to be doing. And both have some sidequests and extras that you can look into, but not an extreme amount that would just confuse you.

i gotta say I, you will learn all the basics in an easy classic RPG, but you do not have to start from one to get the series, i did one last and i get it all perfectly.

My first FF was FFX and I became obsessed with it after that. I must say that if you are a noob, then you should play FFX

As one who has played every one I would recommend ether VIII or X. Both come with tutorials and so are probably the best to learn from.

I started with VII, but for a newbie I recomend IX. I really found little challenge in it. I think the only boss I really got a bit stuck on was Gizamaluke. Before that I had completed VII and VIII, but I found IX the easiest and still do. All hints and clues, hidden treasures etc. and marked by a "!" or "?" so the secrets are easier to find than on VII and VIII. It's not stupidly easy, but its a nice start to the world of FF for a newbie, with a gameplay system that is easy to get used to.
