Smokers!

I was just thinking about ff while having a sigarett, and I realized the only person EVER in the ff series that has even held a cigarett, is Cid. I, for one, would like to see more of smoking characters, it helps create a more personal relationship to the ff characters. I can relate to a lot of the things Cid did for example. Anyways, correct me if I'm wrong here, and any views on this will be well appreciated! Thanks----

While I can appreciate the idea you have here, you also have to remember that these games are supposed to be family-friendly. (HA! FFX-2 was softcore porn.) Promoting cigarette usage to a bunch of kids would not only make the Final Fantasy series look bad, but it would likely get Square-Enix sued by a bunch of angry parents who claim their kids started smoking because videogames said it was okay.

Personally, I could give a rat's ass either way, but that's a solid reason right there why you won't see it happening any time soon. At least, not in the FF series. They probably got a ton of pissed off letters just about Cid, back in the day.

You're probably right about that.. Come to think about it, I haven't seen a lot of smoking characters in ANY games... Well, I still think it made Cid one of the coolest characters ever in the ff series when he had a stump out his mouth constantly

A character smoking a cigarette is just pointless... (although it gives more of a bad ass feel) Look at Auron, he drank but it didn`t make me think any differently about him it just gave people on newgrounds more things to laugh about... haha!

but whatever if it makes a charater seem more "bad" then why not??

When i see characters smoking i dont like them as much as i would if they were non- smokers. I personally dont like being around smokers as i do not smoke and i would see it as kind of trashy for a video game character to smoke. But i wouldnt complain about it, i just wouldnt like the character as much thats all.

I think the same thing, but it is actually just some unreal people, so I dont care that much, it would be cool looking at them smoking, for example Auron, but well, it is not that good for the creators.

My oh my. What would mother say if she saw me watching game people smoke. One she don't give a rat's ass, two, I'm one of a handful of dutch people who don't smoke.

I don't think it would look realisitic though...smoke is hard to imitate.

It wouldn't be hard to imitate - it'd be just downright immoral. Just think, Jack Thompson would have more ammunition to level at the games industry in his (hated) tirade.

Although I smoke, I don't think it would really make much of a difference to me if a Final Fantasy character smoked or not. Yeah, it would put a bit more realism into the game. It'd be funnier if the lead character smoked. He couldn't do half of the stuff that most FF main characters can because of the thick coats of tar lining his lungs. Rather than using tents, he may have to use an oxygen mask. Classic.

Somehow I cannot see Aeris smoking. And I'd die laghing if Vivi walked around holding a cigarette too.

Well come to think about it, the character that would look the most funny smoking all the time in a ff game would probably be... Mog from ffvi

Oh and I just realized, President Shinra in ffvii smokes a cigar in an fmv if I'm not mistaken...

Are you sure? Well, even if he doesn't then he should.. if would really suit him actually lol.

Granted, it's not the nicest thing to see. But smoking characters in Final Fantasy?... hmm... I can't see it really affecting the number of smokers out there. I mean, seeing Cid in FFVII didn't really make me think, "Hmm, you know what? I think I might start smoking myself." After all there are alot of famous people out there who smoke, or who have been seen to smoke, who probably have a much greater impact on children than a game character. J.R. Tolkien, Whoopi Goldberg, Nicole Kidman, Britney Spears, Russell Crowe... the list goes on.

Granted, it's not really the same thing... after all, maybe some kids wouldn't know these people are. In that case, look at anime. There are lots of smokers in there, such as Spike (cowboy bebop), Integra (Hellsing), Hatori (Fruits Basket), Yumi (Rurouni Kenshin), Kaji (Neon Genisis Evangelion) ect ect...

Smoking does convey a particular image about a character that can be hard to replicate by other means. So I say let characters smoke... but -only- if the creators think that it will actually be an improvement.

all i know is when i saw ffvii:ac, i was really dissapointed to see cid without his trademark cigarette. actually, it made me a little depressed. he's just not the same without a cancer stick.

it is good that they only had one charcator smoking, it is stupid to smoke, becuse it is hard on the lungs.
