It's not up for debate. It's a fact. The game is called "FINAL FANTASY" because it was supposed to be Square's last RPG before they went out of business. They didn't expect to make a ton of money off of it. The fans wanted more, so it turned into a series. Period. Plain and simple.

It wasn't a marketing strategy, and it wasn't supposed to be a success.

I've heard from many places that the actual reason of the name "Final Fantasy" was a translation error of "Ultimate Fantasy" or something along those lines.

He says it was because it was their last attempt at a successful game but wouldn't you rather say it was because of that and not a translation error?

I'm not saying this is true, just what I've heard.

Which, coincidently, also isn't worth much in my eyes. SE have gone back on their word plenty of times before. The FFVII compilation is a good example.

Seriously people, why are you debating it? I've heard that same statement before and it's probably true. Now it just seems like an irony or a contradiction since the series never ends. But then again they could have walked away from the title after the first game. However then there would be a title out there with a name that no one can immediately relate with. Therefore if they established an audience they needed to take advantage of the "brand name" and use that to build a fanbase.

Now that they have done that, they can do whatever they want. Release sequels, side projects, even non-ff titles like Vagrant Story.

There really was no way to change the name in my opinion since creating the fan base was critical, especially for a company that was close to the brink of being out of business. They wanted to play it safe and smart, and look at them now.

I'm well aware of this, thank you. If you didn't notice, I'm the one who compiled the master Final Fantasy list, which is stuck right next to this thread. My point with that post was that it's a question a lot of people ask -- whether it's because they don't realize there are more games, or they don't think the other games count for anything. I can't help what people ask, but I promise you I've gotten that question so many times, it's unreal.

just goes to show that the best art happens by accident, or via inside joke. FINAL FANTASY is a perfect title, for anything. slapping roman numeral after it only makes it that much more intense. even beyond the actual reason it was named for, it really does make sense in the sense of the games themselves. you could even try to tie the title into the whole try-to-link-all-the-FF-storylines thing too: i mean, just about every final fantasy game is about the same thing. great evil threatens the world - heroes must save it. so perhaps there's the chance that each game IS the final fantasy - and the roman numerals are simply scratch marks on the wall, each one commemorating a group of heroes that was able to once again save the planet from utter destruction. the title FINAL FANTASY XII certainly has a lot of weight on its shoulders...

Its simple: HES RIGHT!!!
Though there might be a little other reasons, that one is the main reason. But that doesnt exclude the other theories.
Myself, I like to think of the title "FINAL fantasy" as a sort of brag: They wanted to show that they could make a super-fantasy-rpg-game that no other developers could surpass (in wich they succeeded if you ask me) HENCE: FINAL fantasy --> no other fantasy-game would ever be more final.
Irony of this: they improved their FF(-based) games a LOT since the first one but WTH its just a theory. thx for reading this shit

I kinda know the history, and i think the name Final Fantasy sounds cool. just saying
