Chocobos

So i was tlking with my cousin, and after much debate we are trying to figure out if chocobos can fly. In essence they are Gian t Chickens, but they are also closely related to Ostriches (which cant fly). we all know that chocobos can run very fast, dig holes in the ground, and jump pretty high. we also know that certain chocobos (ie gold chocobos) can walk on any part of the map. thus leaves our dilema, if they can walk on water can they fly. In order to keep from sinking they would have to flap there wings and use the same principle as birds to keep afloat. so i believe that with enough power they should be able to fly.

So now i would like to hear what you guys think. do you think chocobos can fly yes or no, and why do you think that.

Nope-nope. Chocobos were never meant to fly. They're like ostriches (and emus ^^ ) - flightless birds. The only real resemblance they share with a chicken is the color, really...

Besides, even the GOLD chocobo couldn't fly. It's just not possible, man.

Actually, i'm pretty sure that they can fly. In FF5 (I think it was FF5...), there was a flying black chocobo. So, some chocobos can fly. Case closed.

You mean the black chocobos from FFTactics? That's an (almost) exclusive case. Consider all of the two-dimensional FF titles. They never flew. Aside from Tactics, what about all the rest? Well sure, in FFX, there was that one jump when your choco looked like it was flying, but it was really just floating down slowly by using its feathers as wind resistance. And they can jump pretty high, too.

And the gold chocobos in FFIX could fly... so that's what, two games? Out of how many?

Chocobos are definitely like ostriches in every respect except for the color. They've even got the same body/neck shape. Chocos are just a whole lot fuzzier. (Or more feathery, if you prefer.)

Yeah, I'm goin' with Loco on this one. Only the Black Mofo's can fly.. from FFT. Yup. No other can fly, they can just do crazy spells or... run faster or over mountains or something...

I think we can all agree that Chocobos... have the best music ever

Well, on the one side I'd say no, they can't. Because they are like ostrichs. On the other side I say yes, because they were flying in FF-IX for example.

The new breed of Airborne Chocobo's were born in FFIV, V and ehh...

Not sure what else, lol.

Since those 2, however, I havent seen any reason to make them fly in all honesty. They all seems to have some kind of Airship to counter for the Choco's anyway, so they may have dubbed it out. But yes, I'll say that because of the way their body is shaped and how short their wings are... the best they could do, is SLIGHTLY slower their fall off a cliff, but not much else would lesser their bloody impact upon the sharp rocks below.

Wings are too short, anyway.

Ok, some chocobo's are stronger in their wings and CAN fly, but I guess we're talking about the big yellow ones. Let me ask you this: If they could fly, why do they always run? Conclusion: THEY DON'T FLY!

I dont recall Chocobos flying in FF IX. I do recall feeding them a red pepper and having them freek out and find a treasure, but fly I think not. When they went to the island in the sky they did'nt really fly then either. I think they are pretty much flightless.

in final fantasy tactics, there is a flying black chocobo that can be a good asset on your team, and you can ride them so that you fly up to high places... black chocos do, others don't... case closed

A little comment on what Dave Johnson said about not-flying Chococo's in FFIX....

COME ON! The gold chocobo? Ring a bell? Anyway, that's a not a normal chocobo, and golden choco's shouldn't fly....it's not traditional.....black ones fly indeed....

Judging from the size of their bodies compared to their wings, I'd have to say no. Physically, they would need much larger wings to fly, I'd guess around 2-3 times larger than what they already have. 4-5 times if they need to fly while carrying someone. Of course, this is Final Fantasy, so they may be sometimes endowed with some sort of magic that allows them to fly.

Can chocobos fly? In certain circumstances they have been known to fly. But the everyday normal yellow chocobo. Not in the least damn bit can they fly. Case Closed.

Odd thing to be debating, especially since FFIX showed that the can fly if they want them to. It all up to the game designers. The chocobo in FFIX had more purpose than in some of the other games. There was the Chocobo Hot and Cold Mini game. But the Gold Chocobo in FFIX can fly, you enter a forest and press X to lift off. It was the only way to get to Mognet Central and Chocobo Paradise and the Chocobo Air Garden. The Air Garden could only be accessed by flying and using a dead pepper above the shadow. And the moogles tell you specificly that you cannot get to Mognet Central without a Chocobo, which can only be flown in, or else you could land. Remember Airships in FFIX needed open area to land on, and Green Plains too, if I remember right, which is way it could not land there. The logic does not much a lot of since, but that is the way it was.

It is a game, Chocobo can do whatever they want. If they fly they fly, if they swim, they swim it really does not matter if it existed in the real world or not. Its a fictious animal.
