NEW YORK- Harry Potter fans, the rumors are true: Albus Dumbledore, master wizard and Headmaster of Hogwarts, is gay. J.K Rowling, author of the mega-selling fantasy series that ended last summer, outed the beloved character Friday night while appearing before a full house at Carnegie Hall. After reading briefly from the final book, "Harry Potter and the Deadly Hallows, "she took questions from the audience members. She was asked by one young fan whether Dumbledore finds "true love". "Dumbledore is gay, " the author responded to gasps and applause. She then explained that Dumbledore was smitten with rival Gellert Grindelwald, whom he defeated long ago in a battle between good and bad wizards. "Falling in love can blind us to an extent, "Rowling said of Dumbledore's feelings, adding that Dumbledore was "horribly, terribly let down." Dumbledore's love, she observed, was his "great tragedy." "Oh, my god, "Rowling concluded with a laugh, "the fan fiction." Potter readers on fan fan sites and else where on the internet have speculated on the sexuality of Dumbledore, noting that he has no close relationship with women and a mysterious, troubled past. And explicit scenes with Dumbledore already have appeared in fan fiction. Rowling told the audience that while working on the planned sixth Potter film, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, "she spotted a reference in the script to a girl who once was of interest to Dumbledore. A note was duly passed to director David Yates, revealing the truth about her character. Rowling, finished a brief "Open Book Tour" of the United States, her first tour here since 2000, also said that she regarded her Potter books as a "prolonged argument for tolerance" and urged her fans to "question authority". Not everyone likes her work, Rowling said, likely referring to "Christian groups" that have alleged the books promote witchcraft. Her news about Dumbledore, she said, will give them one more reason. Sadly I never really got into the Harry Potter books, but a friend of mine is obessed with them, he collects the books, posters, etc. When I told him of the news he said that he still loves Dumbledore and the harry potter series anyway. Gay men and women can find their "true loves" too, not every book or game has to be striaght focused. I wish I would have read the Harry Potter series  Anyway what do you guys think about this? 88 | I think that's just a way for her to work up more publicity. I've read all the books, and Dumbledore never seemed gay. Sure he had a slightly weird "stepfather on stepson" sort of relationship with Harry, but never a "i'm gonna touch you in the bathing suit area" kinda way. | ||||||||

46 | ...Oh my God. I thought the gay thing was just a joke! Anyways, I stopped reading the HP series after the fifth one came out. I hated the fact that Harry became so... angsty.

5,305 | The idea of not reading a (popularly accepted as good) series simply because one character is officially listed as gay is ridiculous. Anyway, my friend said after reading the last book it was kind of obvious that Dumbledore was gay. I can't comment on that since I haven't read the last book... I'm not really that interested in the series, and only read it to keep up with what my friends talk about.

3,101  | I couldn't really see it but ok then. It's definitely not going to stop me from reading the books because I really love that series. It doesn't really bother me actually, I didn't expect this information to come out but it is interesting nonetheless. I can't remember the part specifying where he turned gay or anything but it doesn't worry me in the slightest. Good for Dumbledore!  I seriously don't see it though. | ||||||||

1,427 | Kind of wish she had brought this out in the book. It was kind of out of the blue in my opinion. Kind of an odd, aside. Dear readers, A slight character addendum, Dumbledore is a raving queen. It's a little suspisious that this came out after the books were finished. Otherwise, I'm fine with it.

2,178 | Dumbledore gay? Someone owes me a fiver....  But seriously, adding things like this just makes a story more interesting, it gives the character a bit of depth. And though I don't read the Harry Potter books myself, I can honestly say I've never either stopped reading a book or not read a book because of a homosexual character. It ain't like it ruins the story or nothing...

1,403 | I don't really see the point for her to discuss something like this when none of her books revealed this little fact. Obviously she is A) Creating some publicity, or B) There is going to be a new book Dumbledore will feature in, though she would've just ruined a piece of that book. So pretty much this is just something for the fanboys/girls to chew on and write together more annoying little fanfics. I bet you if anything gaiaonline is gonna be filled with them too. Anyway, besides that fact I really doubt it would've mattered for me while reading the books. So the old dudes gay. So is Ian McKellen who played Gandalf in the LOTR movies and I find him to be a great actor. I'd say the only people affected by this would be as Govinda said, wannabe Christians with bones to pick since their kids no doubt read the books. Furthermore, can she say this since she's already gained all the money and popularity so this won't affect her sales though I'm sure Muslim countries will pile and burns the books because of it, lol. So yeah, it's not that much of a shock except for people who are too deep into the HP world and need to get a life.

540 | I can't see why Dumbledore being gay should put anyone off the series, and neither can I see why J.K. didn't put it in the book. One would think that spending so much going back and forth to Dumbledore's past, she would have been able to make it a little clearer. But whatever. I'm sure she had her reasons. Perhaps she figured that since children are avid fans, she wouldn't make it too explicit. Although I can't really see why bringing it to light would have been an issue. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with it. And if she was homophobic, she wouldn't have decided on swinging Dumbledore's preference that way. It doesn't figure. But my point is, to stop reading Harry Potter because Dumbledore is gay is stupid. Really..
