Why people native from U.S. are get to called Americans?

What comes to my concern is that the word "Americans", refers to much more than just the country "United States of America". There is Canada, the whole central and south America. The global adapted tag "he is American" is just mean towards the rest of the continent. Although it is the most powerful country in the American continent, I believe that this tag is wrong and discriminative and economical power should not be a distinction between countries. Ever since I was little, I always questioned my father, mother and friends in, why do the people living in the U.S.A. get to be called Americans and all the others are central or south Americans? From my point of view the tag is insolent and ignorant. What do you think?

it's simple. Us citizens have America in there countries name. United States of America, people aren't going to call them united stateians..

Because thats how it is. We can't be United Statesians, that it silly.

I never hear Canadians or Mexicans complaining, either. And they still refer to Latin America and South America.

I certainly see your argument, and it is very valid. You have a good complaint, but the brute truth is that the humans are inexact in their descriptions. It's not 'fair' and slightly pompous, but then I've never understood how we even know what 'fair' means.

If it put's a corner of your mind at rest, I do not consider myself 'American'. I consider myself a cosmopolitan or as Richard Blaine put it, a 'Drunkard'.


Also I would like to point out that 'Americans' really never stop to think about themselves as Americans all that often. But when they go to other countries, the people there, are quick to call them 'Americans'. It all seems quite silly to me. But I'm not one to be too heavily wrapped up in borders and nations or governments, for that matter.

America is a shortened term for the United States of America. Sure there are a whole group of different countries forming the a landmass called The Americas. But the U.S. of A. is the only country bearing the name America in it. Hence, we are Americans because we live in America, which is a shortened term for the U.S.of A., which is a portion of the Americas. I hope this helps clear up any confusion without creating more confusion.

But are people from Europe not called Europeans? Or Africans from Africa? I see what you are saying about the shortened name, but you must admit, it's slightly a double standard, though, not without precedent.

Those from the United States of America are called Americans. Those from the United States of Mexico -yes, that is the correct name of that country- are called Mexicans. There are two other countries in the western hemisphere with the name "the United States of" and then their names. I don't remember which ones they are. But their people are called by whatever comes after the phrase "The United States Of-"

Now your calling people by their continental names. We Americans could also be called North Americans. Just like the French could be called Europeans. Depending on what kind of Russian you are you could either be European or Asian. I see no double standards about any of it. It's just a way to group certain people together on different scales.
