Quina plaque question. Need advice. Comb my hair with fish teeth.
Someone, please tell me to stop putting such random things in the title of my posts. Anyway, I have a question about something for my apartment. A couple of weeks back, my boyfriend and I were at a huge store or something or another in NJ and I found these HUGE decorative forks and spoons, I bought one of each for our apartment. They're REALLY cool, and if anyone wants me to post pictures of them up, just ask! [[I'm SO damn odd, it hurts.]] Anyway, they're made out of metal and I wanted to put them on my wall in an "X" shape, you know, how people do with swords and such. Above the X in the middle I want to make a Quina face plaque, sort of like a mask of Quina. I think it would be SOOO cool
. Her tongue could hang down into the center of the X. The only thing is, I don't know what to make it out of. This is for all of those artists out there, or anyone with creativity: How should I make this? I don't want it to be too lumpy, so clay is out of the question really. Also, I need it to be big enough to be a good size with the fork and spoon, and they're really large. I was thinking cloth, but no, I want her face to be a hard substance. I'll make her cap-thing out of cloth though, and have the tassle things hanging down. Omg, this makes me so excited thinking about it! Okay, well please give me some tips on how to make this most amazing thing! |

Stop putting such random things in your titles!!!
As for your question , sorry but I am an artist of words not, uh sculptures or whatever you would call that thing. Good luck with it though. If It was me though I would try to get my hands on traditional daggers, put them in an X and make a Zidane thingymajig, yeah that'd be cool.

I'm an artist and designer at college, so I think Paper mache would be pretty good.
The only thing you'll have a problem with it moulding it, in which case, bend cardboard in the shape of Quina's face/tongue if possible. I think it's a great idea of yours by the way!!

Simple too. Will it be easy to be made smooth? I don't want it to be lumpy or anything, like with shadowy regions or valleys. I want it to look smooth and white, then I was thinking of maybe using rubber for the tongue? I like the paper mache idea most def for the face though Any tips on how to make it extremely smooth ad symmetrical? ^_^ You rock! |

Okay, here is a picture of Terry and I with the fork and spoon!
See how big they are? I was thinking of making the mask/plaque big enough to fit about/inbetween them when they're in an "X" shape and such. Whoop! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...z/Quina002.jpg |

Woah! Those are massive! Very pretty!
As for making it smooth, the bigger the face, the smoother you can make it. Make sure not to make the mache mix too runny, or nothing with stick, just make sure that you use fairly long strips of paper. There's no way to fully guarentee a totally bump-free face, and it may need one or two practise shots, but it's fairly easy to handle. You can smooth it down with your hands, or add more mix to the face. It can be tricky to use if it's runny, so if that happens, just add more paper to the mix. Newpaper works well in paper mache mix because it's cheap and when the mix is dry you can paint over it is you somehow have any print showing through. Also, the rubber tongue idea is excellent!

Thank you for all of the tips! I can't really start making it for about another month, but I definately want to plan it all out and perhaps get the cardboard the right size and everything. If this one actually works, I think it would be really cool to get a staff and make a Vivi mask, then daggers for Zidane, sword for Steiner, etc... Jesus, I have way too many ideas not not enough motivation, lmfao. Hehehe, I'll definately post the picture of it once I'm done with it!
