Me - An Outcast.

So I started college two week ago, as I think I said in my introduction thread, I'm studying music. I'm really enjoying my course, and the teachers are pretty cool, I actually feel like I'm getting up in the morning because I want to, for my passion. Music.

One person who was in a band with me at school is on the course with me, hes like the only one who I actually still see, apart from my ex-girlfriend, which is just weird.

First week was looking okay, I was being myself (I'm a little extreme, but I'm not too annoying, least I don't think so ) Two guys called Craig and Tom seemed to like me, and I got on well with them, also with Alan (the guy from school). Everyone else I found pretty obnoxious though, and they like to ridicule me if I get something wrong, or raise my hand to say I don't understand something.

Everything was fine though, but now, just my luck, Tom and Craig have quit. Just left the college. So now the only one I really have is Alan, but he has other lessons so I don't see him outside music. Alan told me the others find me irritating because I think I'm "smart". I am a little full of myself sometimes, but only for sarcastic purposes. Besides, I don't shout "Shut up" or tell people to go away from me like they constantly do to me, making me feel unwelcome..

So now I spend study hours by myself in the library usually since they're so few to "hang out" with. I usually browse tff and other various sites, not even posting much, just out of boredom. Only people from my old school talk to me, and I rarely see them.

I'm not there to make friends, I'm there for music, but I'd like to feel more welcome. So basically I'm asking weather you think I should just ignore them and get on with my course, or keep trying to converse with them, because they obviously don't like me...

Bah, fuck 'em. If people rip on you for showing your intelligence, then they're not worth your time. Correct me if I'm wrong, but college is supposed to do away with inane drama that high school tends to carry. I wasn't particularly popular in high school (outside of my small clique of friends), but once I got to college, I made several friends, by just being myself... which I found surprising since offline I don't find myself interesting in the slightest. Just keep trying, man.

In the words of Phlogiston Verdigris: "It's better to be hated for who you are, than loved for what you are not". Don't change to pander to other people.

Bah. They aren't really worth your time. Sometimes it takes a while for people to become adjusted to other people, but if you keep trying, the chances are that they may just think you're trying too hard... Seriously. They aren't worth your time. I've been through something similar to this before. In the end, I just... stopped caring about what they thought.

I think you should just leave them to their own pointlessness.

First of all, it's good of you that you state your problem, it shows that you have some wit.

The answer is rather simple, but I'd like to explain it all to you, just so you'll get it: Mainly, you can't keep ignoring these guys. Sooner or later you'll have to confront them. And in what way you've decribed it all, once you'll confront them, it won't be very friendly.

You said you didn't take the course to make friends. Nobody takes ANY course to make friends. You just make them because they are there and you need someone to feel comfortable with. Right now, you feel as comfortable as sitting inbetween a bunch a rhino's.

They make fun of you because you're smart. BIG DEAL!! They're being really stupid about it. This is really not your fault, and it has nothing to do with you. Is it a crime to be interested in a certain subject?

How do you make friends then, you ask? Simple, it's a Music college, so start about music. Act normal and ask these dudes what type of music they like, what instruments they play, where the general interest comes from etc. This way, they'll feel more trustworthy towards you and vice versa.

Also, DON'T WORRY. You don't need to get upset if things don't work out once in a while. If you do, just calmly talk to Alan about it, and then just continue.

Wait, concentrate on your work and within time you will see who likes you and who doesn't. This is kind of like when I first came here, not much people cared what I said and I often found people would reply to me basically flaming me. *Looks up*. But yeah, I liked the FF series and didn't really give a fuck so I stayed and eventually joined the BoD, and I am still here today being called emo

But yeah its screwed up, all the people at school I would have thought hated me ended up being my friend and vica-versa. Just wait it out and be nice to those that are nice to you and you'll probably find somebody in the most weirdest place.

People say that is a myth, its not.

Those jerks in high school won't make in the real world, they will break.

Here is a example, when I went to high school, there were these mean girls who would judge [i]anyone, even themselfs[i] so any way, after a few years, I met up with them again....as waiters at a restrunt.

I gave them hell for being rude to me, just so they knew how it felt. Sure it was mean, but they actually threw a rock at me once.

Well, you all pretty much told me what I thought you would, I just needed to hear it, to make sure I will make the right decision. I'm liking Marikos idea ;]

I also under what Inferno Mage is saying though, I guess it is inevitable that I will have to confront them eventually, I mean, I'm in their class, I might even get paired up with some of them in an ensemble or something, so, I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

It can be hard making new friends. You seem like a shy person, which I completely understand, as I am too. With my friends, I am content and can be a hyperactive little bunny, but around those who I am less familiar with, i'm quiet and get a little paranoid.

You are likely to meet people like your friends, who will respect you for being yourself. You may not feel like it currently, but there are nice people everywhere, and as long as you are thinking positively and getting on with life, you will meet great new people.

I would say to try socializing but not too much. If you really love your music and enjoy it, go full force with that. But, in your spare time, just try to hangout with some new people.
