Wrong. It is ACTUALLY a fruit. It grows on a tree, you know. Just because it's more bland like a vegetable doesn't make it a vegetable. Vegetables don't have juice (unless you grind them up in a blender or something), and a tomato does. Same with seeds. And the whole growing on trees thing.

To be slightly more on topic, though, coconuts don't actually have milk, either. The milky fluid is the same as any other fruit juice... it's simply juice. Just because it's a different color and a little thicker doesn't mean much. Ever looked at unrefined pineapple juice? It's a thicker color, not clear like you've been led to believe all these years.

As far as how to grow palm trees, you can only grow a coconut palm by planting a coconut. And yes, the shell itself is the actual seed, so you'd have to plant the whole thing to get a tree.

Well I wasn't referring to it as literal milk, because of it's color alone. Beyond contrary belief on these forums, I'm not a complete idiot.

I referred to it as Coconut Milk because I've heard other people call it that, plus in order to make coconut milk there's very little in the process of doing so... little more than water is included to make thin or thick milk. I think it's just the juice as well, but it's thought of as milk because of it's color and sometimes thick consistency. Plus there's things such as coconut cream for deserts which may add to that.

Plus there's a drink called Oeli.. or something, and it's ingredients read: Water, Coconut Milk, Watermelon.... but oh well.

And the "milk" of a coconut happens to be the nutrients the seed (shell) uses to grow, so you can't crack open a coconut, drink the milk, plant the shell and expect a tree. Bite an orange seed in half some time. There's squishy liquid inside.

I don't think the thought of 'what a coconut actually is' ever crossed my mind! I guess they are a fruit! If this was not mentioned, I probably wouldn't have been sure of what it actually is. Haha I probably would have said something stupid like 'it's a type of nut!' I should go ask my Mother and see if she knows. I just asked her and she wasn't even sure, she was like 'Well I know it isn't a nut...' lol. Since the intelligent people say it's a fruit, I will go with them. I'm sure they know what they're talking about.

But wait a minute... You have to plant an entire coconut to get a tree, right? So the coconut is the seed. Can it be the seed and the fruit? The seed doesn't have any covering that isn't part of the seed (like apple or orange or tomato seeds have the covering of the fruit). It has a shell, just like any other seed, and nutrients inside, just like any other seed. So is it a fruit, or just one bigass seed?

Coconuts don't have any method of dispersing their seeds either, like prettymuch everything else does. A coconut won't be carried on the wind. A coconut won't stick in fur and drop later. And a coconut sure as hell won't be swallowed then "deposited" somewhere else fully intact. (Ouch!)

UNLESS......there are little tiny coconut seeds that we just don't realize are there. Like celery seeds, or navel orange seeds.

Strawberries have seeds covering the fruit. Granted, you can take them off if you really wanted to, but their seeds are on the outside, not the inside.

I think a coconut really would be some kind of giant seed... you have a point.


And the tomato plant/bush/thing is "technically" considered a tree, if only because of its fruit-like nature. I'm not too sure on the specifics, myself.

I found out the other day in biology that the only fruit you cant eat when on a diet is something called "sharon fruit" or something like that... apparently it's THAT sweet. Theyre nicknamed "orange tomatos".

Another interesting fruit fact... i can't remember what island this is, but it's one my geography teacher visted, the most common injury, which is often lethal, is coconuts falling onto peoples heads. What a comedy death! Death by coconut! Even funnier, one of the people in the class suggested that they all should wear crash helmets... on a nice sunny caribbean beach...
