I for one am first not sure if this topic would fit here or in the music section it's sort of divided. But now to the Point of my ramblings I was wandering what game music people considered the best. (maybe good enough for your MP3 player I won't judge) So the way I think this should go is you state the games or the game series that you think have some bitchin music, and that means any game if it was first something else and then became a game I still fell that that is cool to contribute. so I'll go first Star Wars (they made many Star wars games and the music is awesome) The legend of Zelda Kirby Kingdom Hearts

Inventory | Ugh, Star Wars is a cheap shot, since all the suites John Williams composed are constantly used in all the Star Wars games (almost too much). My favorites are Kirby as well, Advance Wars, Chaos Legion, and Devil May Cry (all 4 games)

| I agree that the Star Wars comment was a bit cheap but it is still a game and some of them use the Original music, which is the SHIZ!!!!

| 2 sons, AWESOME! | I am going to bypass the FF series on this question because there is just to much greatness there. Lunar: SSSC / SS and EB had some wonderful music in them. The Silent Hill series has some mind blowing scores on it that would be great for some of my moods that I go through. The orignal opening to Wild Arms is still one of my favorite songs via video games, I sometimes find my self whistling it at very odd moments. Suikoden (all) have great music tracks laid out through out them. Secret of Mana and Crono Trigger also have some that are very addictive.

Inventory | Obviously FF has good music, pending which one but I think that's a given. MGS has amazing music as well. Most of it is one composer but even the extra bands they throw in fit the mood and yes are quite catchy! Lastly I'd throw in one of the composers from the Xenosaga series. The series wasn't as good as I hoped in the end, but there was one of the 3 composers they had who made quite a good set of songs. If you listen to the cinematic music in 2 it's great, though in game is bleh. And all of 3 is pretty good as well from the same person. | ||||||||||||

Inventory | Well yeah, of course most people are going to say Final Fantasy. I adore the music from IV - X, all lovely pieces. Movie games have good music but then again they usually just use the actual songs from the movies in some. I suppose Kingdom Hearts had alright music, I'm not a big fan of that series though. A few of the Mario games have nice music as well. I don't play enough games hence why I don't have many opinions.

Inventory | I agree, Crisis Core had some amazing music, Takeharu Ishimoto is great. Almost, just almost, as great as Nobuo Uematsu. Sonic the Hedgehog has some wicked scores on it, although they are very fast paced and all. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time had amazing music too, considering the game itself focused on the playing of music aha. Mario games have always had good, fun & catchy tunes. F-Zero = Best Techno rock music anygame has produced!!

| Wow, this is sure to be a long list. I mean, I'm a confessed fanatic of game music, almost as much as I am of metal. Perhaps even more. I've taken the liberty of grouping some games by their composers. I feel that most of the time, it's not exactly the game but the composer people prefer. This is especially true of game series that hold different composers, which may cause some of the series' games to have awe-inspiring music, and some that may hold sub-par music. Motoi Sakuraba (Tales games, Golden Sun, Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile): Definitely one of my faves, if not my personal favorite. Keyboardist, as most of the composers around. He's quite eclectic, and a long list of his songs are quite epic. If anything, I'd recommend The Incarnation of the Devil (it's instrumental, guys, no need to worry around); it's pretty much his signature song, drawn originally from Star Ocean II and eventually moved to several of the Enix games produced by Tri-Ace. Yoko Shimomura (Parasite Eve, Super Mario RPG, Legend of Mana, former Alph Lyra composer/interpreter): Perhaps my favorite female composer. Again, a keyboardist, but she takes her piano lessons quite to heart. Loves the use of synthesizer, and the keyboard predominates amongst the instruments. Also capable of working with a huge set of varied themes, but she sticks to her theme VERY closely. If for some reason you've played at least PE or LoM, you may realize just how good she is. The last bit (being an Alph Lyra composer) holds a bit of relevance. That's Capcom's "all-star" composer group, which exists since the age of...Street Fighter II? So yeah, she may have either composed or served as one of the musicians behind the rarely famous but almost legendary SFII songs. Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono series, Xenogears/Xenosaga I-III): I presume this is the composer Maridia speaks about; definitely, he's one of my heroes (musically speaking). Big name, even bigger talent. One of the reasons why Xenosaga can be saved and savored by those who hate the mind-blowing story and the battle system. Kenji Ito (SaGa series, specifically RS 1, RS3 and SaGa Frontier): I must make a stand for this guy. He's just epic, but since most people rarely play SaGa games, they rarely get his vibe. Another of those eclectic composers, that can easily work with a huge set of music styles (from Gothic-inspired to Techno to Sentai music). (Oh, and I have not much love for Masashi Hamazuzu, who composed for SaGa Frontier II and Unlimited SAGA. He's nice, but compared to Mr. Ito, he's just out of his league) Noriyuki Iwadare (Grandia series, amongst others): what can I say about the composer that makes the best battle songs around? Really, fighting a battle in the Grandia games is a great experience first-hand just because of the music. Give thanks to this man. Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy, of course): it's odd to speak of favorite game music and NOT mentioning him. You either have to be tone-deaf or hate the FF series for pointless reasons, or some odd something to NOT at least admire him. He's just amongst the epic composers around. No wonder people don't mention him: he's already assumed to be legendary by default. Hiroki Kikuta (Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3): another composer rarely heard of, but also awe-inspiring. To be awe-inspiring in the realm of 16-bit requires a huge amount of talent. Koji Kondo (ZELDA!!! MARIO!!! STARFOX!!): good grief, if there's songs that are instantly recognized by virtually all gamers around, at least one or two are due to this man. Definitely a standard of the industry; if anything, he can pretty much be called "Mr. Nintendo Music" Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill): well, whaddya expect? Most people love him. He's one of the few composers people actually know by name, so that has to mean something. But his talent really lies in how precise he can be in giving a game the mood it needs to be successful. I mean, without Mr. Yamaoka's songs, would Silent Hill be as scary? Good games have the full components add to the mood, so you can easily immerse in the game; music is one of them, and even more in survival horror games, where music can be every bit as important as sound effects or graphics. Yuzo Koshiro (Etrian Oddysey I & II, amongst others): I'd say a late-comer even though he's on the industry for so long. But really, having so much epic on a DS card needs talent, and this man has it on spares. There's just so much other composers I can't make them justice, and some that I really, really wish to know of. As for games to whose composers I don't know off, but also deserve mention just because of how awesome the songs are, I must make mention of the Super Robot Taisen/Wars series. It makes people try to understand what a leitmotif is (just so you know, it's the "theme music" of the character itself). Pretty much one epic song after another, a shame I don't know of the composers or I would have mentioned them all. As well, some homebrew games do deserve some respect because of the quality of their compositions: the Touhou series (if you don't know, you should look for Perfect Cherry Blossom and indulge from there) and Ragnarok Battle Offline (specially the boss themes) are good examples of this. I believe I should stop around here, or else I'll just overload you people with quality songs.
