Let's see. A Compact Disc can hold around 680MB, costs less than any GBA cartridge. Cartridges are also less relyable the more they're used, and their battery backup is the same way. True, the memory cards can lose their savability after time, but their data can be transfered for multiple backup copies (except for certiain copy-protected files, like with BOFV and Animal Crossing), and the N64 is the only popular console that used both cartridges and memory cards. It is true that discs can get scratched by simply using them, but minor scratches rarely make a big difference, and can be easily and cheaply repaired (although, after a while, they go beyond repair). The only commercial way to fix a cartridge is to upload it onto a computer and re-apply it to a new cartridge, which has been deemed illegal thanks to people making multiple copies of the same cartridge (not only that, but the equipment is very expensive).
Overall, after all that rambling...I'd choose discs. |

Discs now a days for the main reason, I'm more likely to lose cartridges like all my DS ones, and they aren't like the old ones were it seemed that dust falling gently from the air would scratch them.
So even though it might give me an asthma attack to get my NES cartridges to work, at least they do, albeit eventually, and I've had to re-buy some of my PS1 discs.

I tend to replay cartridge games more than disc games. There is just something about the replay value of old-skool games that just keeps me being a gamer. I think I play more SNES than any other platform.

I can't believe I never noticed this...
Anyway, discs vs. cartridges in the keep 'working fine' category depends on what type of person you are. Some people just seem to scratch all their cds and somehow dissolve the insides of their cartridges. I have my old PC and segaCD discs still in very good condition and I STILL have my nes LoZ and my snes FF:3 (FF:VI) in immensely good condition. With the battery backup of carts mentioned before, this really depends on the cart, as even carts on the same console can have different forms of battery backup. Like on the n64 for instance. I feel this is really more of a Disc Capacity vs. Faster cartridge loading times question. And with higher capacity cartridges? I say them. Not that they're currently used legally or anything. (DS carts don't count. They're not really that high a capacity anymore. And YES, I can store several roms of my ps1/ps2 games on higher capacity cartridges/drives. )

CD's definitely CD's! The production costs and price of cartridge based games is my main issue with cartridges. I still remember the price of Nintendo 64 games with dread.

I'd have to say disks, All you really have to do is keep 'em in some kind of case so they don't break or scratch too badly. They're cheaper, they seem to hold more data, and they just seem like the best thing to put a game on. Like I said, just keep 'em in a good case and you won't break 'em.

I tend to find discs more sophisticated then Cartridges. But having grown up with the nes-n64 era, i tend to favor cartridges more than CD's in terms of being "loyal" if you wish.
In terms of utility, i found discs easier to put away since ever game case brilliantely locked them in. As for cartridges...you had to buy those plastic cases which never seemed to fully protect them...and one had to blow them...(Giggidy..goo!) Although loading seemed a hassle, it greatly reduced when gamecube discs came out which turned into the perfect hybrid. Overall, the Gamecube discs were the pinnacle for me... |

It's kinda' hard for me to choose. I mean...with cartridges, you could save directly onto the game. At least....with the older games like for the NES and such... and they did last quite a long time. I remember having my Mario games for many years before they started to go bad.
CDs are great because you can store them easily. But you need a memory card or a system to save your progress. Which isn't so bad. Meh...either one is fine for me.

Well. Discs have better graphics and as already mentioned are easier to clean. But I remember the first console I had was a Master System. It was really good as I couldn't really ruin the games as they were cartridges. (I was like five ohkay). Anyway I see little children today and their first console is an Xbox 360. The discs could get ruined so easily
.I think cartridges had a lot of promise. Little to no loading time, easier to look after, you could do a lot of interesting things with them. Such as the pre mentioned Sonic and Knuckles .I guess one of the reasons I love my Nintendo DS to bits is because it has cartridges. It just wouldn't be the same if it were Discs. |
