Before the DS came out, I would have most certainly said discs. However, I have fallen in love with these little expanded memory carts that the DS uses. I don't know why. They are just convenient and fit nicely into the DS.
PSP's UMD's are just awkward and are a little wiggly inside the PSP. I don't know why either but if Nintendo DS had movies for sales on DS carts, I would purchase them simply because I use my DS a lot for gaming, and the media dock for files and homebrew - so if I wanted to watch a movie I would. (all I need now is the ds browser!) But with the PSP the UMD movies never interested me. Even with the higher resolution, and larger TFT screen. Carts all the way! (plus you can save to the cart, and no extra memory device is needed) |

A CD can be destroyed easily, cartridge, not so easily..well it is but it's safer than a CD.

Which holds more memory a disc or a cartridge?
Since every game I have ever purchased remains in mint condition with the exception of few it doesn't make it difference for me. I'll tell you what I don't miss: Blowing into the Cartridge numerous times until it finally worked. Meh, we still got GBA. Get over it. |

I hear NDS was just a beta or something, can't remember the source...I think I'll look through my history pages again.

I want to know why everything went to discs in the first place. They're easy to scratch, the loading times are annoying sometimes, and make more noise. The main advantage of discs is that they can be stored in the case easily, but the DS games have proven that cartridges can too.
Then, regarding the cases, the discs can be damaged just by taking them out or putting them back in the case. Where cartridges are harder to do that with. I like how the DS games are set up. The back doesn't cover the part it attaches to so no more problems with dust getting in it. Of course with a cartridge you can't have the machine such up the game. I like how the Wii doesn't have you put it on the little spinny thing when putting it in the console. I was always afraid I'd damage the disc doing that one time. So cartridges win, but that doesn't mean discs will die out anytime soon. I predict that one day one of the two will die, most likely discs. I think we're still just facinated by them for the most part. That and CDs help keep disc games alive. If they find a way to make cartridges more efficient with music than CDs, that will be when discs have no chance left and the cartridges have won. Until then, discs still live but probably don't have a chance of doing something to make cartridges become obsolete.

While it's true that discs hold more information, and have better graphics and sound capabilities, I'd still say cartridges. Why? for one, cartridges are far more durable...you can drop it on the carpet (we're not talking hard wood here), and nothing would happen. A disc would probably get scratched. You can lightly step on a cartridge...a disc would be cracked.
Expanding on the scratches in the discs...A videogame disc gets scratched wayyy too easily, thus ruining the game. What do peple do when they want to change games? Take one disc out, flip it upside down on their ps2 (assuming we are talking about a ps2, hypothetical), and put in the new disc. It's quick and convenient. But not a good idea if you want to keep your disc in good shape. Because of this very thing, my FFX no longer works in some areas...I cannot enter the calm lands from the airship, and my disc completely freezes in Zanarkand in the beggining of the game. Not much of a problem for me since I beat it, but my boyfriend cannot play the game now. Which is a bummer. I paid 50 dollar for it when it came out, and I can't find the greatest hits version...anywhere. So basically I'm screwed. When a cartridge isn't performing up to par, or not working at all...you take it out and gently blow in it, and voila...it's working just fine.

Discs get damaged much easier. Cartridges can be easily repaired. And besides, I feel nostalgic playing my old N64 cartridges.
As well, handhelds and carts go together like me and Alessandra Ambrosio. In my dreams. |

one time i ordered ff7 off of amazon.com. i was soo ecited to get FF7. but when it came the first disk was scratched up to where when the cutscenes play choppy like and the second disk was so scratched up i had to order a new disk! some1 mentioned above about its easy to take care of cartridges if u dont drop them on the floor. well i have dropped my SNES carts on the florrs and my DS and my GBA carts on the floor and they still work fine. but seeing as im that clumsy ive also dropped disks wich is a BIG MISTAKE.
and also disks have the advandtages as well graphically, public popularity wise, and storage wise. although im sure with the unleashment of the DS and its new cartridges cartridges will make a comeback. Quote:
EDIT: ALSO i got my ff9 from gamestop i think it was a long time ago it was used and the disks are scratched and i hope it works all the way to disk 4.

Cartridges may be more kid-friendly, but if you take care of your discs they can last ages.
While carts/cards have reached significant storage capacity, they're also significantly more expensive to manufacture than an optical disc, and that extra cost would definitely be added to the game price. |
