Ad Blocks

You may notice the new 'sponsored link' block randomly generated in each thread...

I know it may be annoying to some, and others will dismiss it, but I needed to sneak one ad to help pay for server upgrades, etc. I hope it doesn't bother you too much... it is merely just an experiment. I've always been an advocate against ad-banners, but I feel these are discrete and only help for the greater good for TFF.

Anyways, just sort of wanted to give a heads up on what I was doing. Thanks guys

Well...uhh...I'm not a big fan of it myself. But if it's for upgrades and such, I guess it's okay. It's easy to scroll over anyways. I just hope that pop-ups will never raid these Forums. Ads are doable...

you gotta do what you gotta do - but yeah, as long as you leave pop ups out of it it's all good. what was the link to that paypal donating thread again?

Yeah, there will NEVER NEVER NEVER be pop-ups or any tedious amount of advertising on TFF. I like things clean and ads discrete enough to keep the user experience high.

If anyone remembers TFF 3 years ago when we were hosted at GSN (Gamesquad Network)... we were PACKED with ads! maybe 3 per page including pop-ups... it was hell and gave my computer 3 viruses. I still have nightmares about it.

No problem Fuzzy. Especially us firefox users there isn't much deal about it. We all need somethings to pay for what we do, it's just like getting promoters to help you pay for what you're doing.

Well I'd rather there be a Paypal link or something, or at least have ads at the top or bottom of pages (instead of right in the middle of the damn thread!), but I suppose it must be done. I'm sure we can all deal with it.

Having the ad in the middle of thread is more effective. Google Adsense pulls data from all the content leading up to it... so in essence, we will have a more targeted ad depending on the content of the topic.

So who knows, maybe someone will see a cool link targeted toward their interests from that topic.

The old Paypal may be an option if users truly hate this, as I said, this is just an experiment.

It doesn't really bother me much. I was kind of wondering what the hell was going on when I first saw it, though.

But for some reason, the ad is now showing links for funny avatars and World Of Warcraft. Weird.

Actually, the TekkenZaibatsu forums do this, too. Have ads in threads. Though, it's an 'adbot' that shows up like a user, but only has an ad banner in the content after like.. 4 posts or so.

Having Adblock with the G-Filter set extension in Firefox removes it completely. You can hardly tell it's there.
