Sorry For Server Down Time Earlier

Hey all,

Sorry for the server down time earlier today, I woke up and I was getting an error saying:

"The Following PHPBB Forum was disabled for security reasons. If you are the webmaster of this forum please contact support for more detail."

It confused me b/c we are not using PHPBB but VB, so I called our host and got a clarification. It turns out that they will NOT allow any PHPBB to exist on any of their servers DB... and it turns out that Argh! (Loco's site) uses the PHPBB, so that is why all of our DBs were suspended. They told me to backup and delete the db using phpbb and then they will unsuspend our account, which they did.

They believe there are some major security exploits with PHPBB, but did offer alternatvies for it. (Loco this is for you)

Loco, I'll PM you more information about getting your forums server friendly... sorry for the mess. I'm about to make a backup of your db and delete it for the time being, or our host will do so by the end of the day.

Anyways, sorry for the down time, but I was shocked how friendly and well spoken the support line was. I think we found a decent host with great support for a change!

Indeed, phpbb is one big security issue, don't use it. Bugtraq is full of phpbb related stuff.

Sorry I haven't been around much, but between all the travel and now going into the surgical ward tomorrow, I can't really do much until later this month. I appreciate you handling all of my duties for me while I've been out of the loop, and I'll pick up the slack on the news articles and my website and so forth once I get out of the hospital.

Or at least as soon as I can stand to sit at the computer. That could take a while.

Heh, yeah Toro, there are apparently a lot of phpbb bugs and security holes that really turn highly esteemed servers away from it.

I'll be sure to help you get your forums back in line again, we will just have to use a different board that is approved by this server. I dont know all of the details, but we just have to stray away from phpbb. I have your complete DB backed up and ready to go, for when we do find something... maybe we can find something that will allow us to import a PHPBB DB backup onto a different BB script...? I know they exist, I have heard of them.

Anyways, no rush, enjoy your time off and I hope everything goes well tomorrow.

Like all these issues I miss them. LOL. At least this time it wasn't a server problem. Whew!!! This has been through lots of servers and names since I've been here. I just have one standing question... How come you both don't use vB? It just seems so weird that you two don't use the same boards.

Good Question, and believe me, I would have given Cesar a VB if it were allowed. Only one forum per license is the new rule that the Vbulletin team enforces now. You can either lease a license yearly or purchase one. PHPBB is probably the BEST free board out there, but I know there are a few others (invision, ubb, and a few others...?)

But yeah, we have gone through a lot haven't we...? I think we are finally on good grounds now \=()

Pretty much what Fuzz said. I have been considering it though. I mean, it's not like I don't have the money sitting around to pay the yearly fees for vB, but at the same time, I don't want my forums to simply become a carbon copy of TFF, either. They (and my website, which will see updates soon) have an entirely different purpose for existing.

Surgery wasn't so bad. Hurts like a bitch 24/7 though. Expect my internet time to be sparse until I can actually put up with sitting in front of a computer. The doctors had to completely rebuild the kidney, so it goes without saying that my recovery period is going to be unnecessarily long.

Yeah, for the most part PHPBB offered exactly what you were looking for w/o being like TFF. I'm sure we'll find you another forum of some sort soon. We still have an open DB for one. Our host routinely scans DBs for PHPBB for security reasons, I mean CMON.

Glad to hear your surgery went well. I bet it does hurt like a bi-otch 24/7. I"m sure they gave you some hella pain killers though. It is amazing what modern medicine can do you these days... rebuilding kidneys, etc. Good to see you back on the forums! as I said, we'll find you another forum for your rebuild of argentos.

You're right... a lot of others weren't as great as phpBB.

But I found one that makes phpBB look like child's play. Am I content? You damn well better believe it. Fuzz, I need to make sure this will fly by our server -- it's SMF, and it's got security and pre-loaded hacks out the ass. And it's free. And I went ahead and built it. (In fact, you've got a PM about the business end of things.)

Anyway, so long as our server doesn't yell at us for using SMF, there shouldn't be any more problems with TFF on my behalf.
