Final Fantasy XIII No Longer a PS3 Exclusive

I'm sure some may already have heard, but Final Fantasy XIII is no longer 'exclusively' available for just the Playstation 3. The game is now also available for the Xbox 360. This news came straight from the mouth of Square-Enix president, Yoishi Wada.



The announcement came at the end of the Microsoft press conference and was accompanied by a video package for the title.


"Releasing an Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII will allow us to provide the game to even more fans in the two regions of North America and Europe," said Wada. "We are currently working hard on these two versions".


In addition, Wada also announced several release dates for other products in the Square-Enix portfolio that will be appearing on Xbox 360. Infinite Undiscovery will launch on September 2, Star Ocean: The Last Hope in early 2009, and The Last Remnant on November 20th worldwide.







Personally, I have been holding out on buying the PS3 until FFXIII was released for it. This news sort of side-tracks me though, since I do enjoy the online achievements that the XBOX 360 offers. I will probably still continue to buy the PS3 version, as I really need a Blu Ray player.

I'll be getting this on PS3 regardless of the news.

I know a lot of people were putting off a PS3 purchase in hopes of FFXIII and I've had a lot of people tell me today that they no longer have any desire to buy one. It's sad, because it's the more powerful and technically more impressive system, but it's so expensive to develop for that the developers are opting for the 360 just because it's cheaper and has a much wider non-Japanese playerbase.

This is so depressing that Square keeps going around doing this. It feels like one betrayal after another from them. The only thing that I'm glad for is that during the press conference the president was careful not to say exclusive for Star Ocean 4. I was so angry when they announced it for the 360, which is such a stupid move. It sounds like they are going to make it multiplatform as well now. I'm getting tired of this multiplatform. People need to stick to a console.

I'm still certain that FFXIII will play better on the PS3 simply because the White Engine was built around the PS3 in mind after they moved it up from the PS2. It is going to make use of the PS3 better than it will on the 360.

I still don't see the whole fascination with the gamer score. Its pointless. Oh and Fuzz, the PS3 has the same thing coming out with their trophy system or whatever. I'm not interested in being rewarded for playing some game that I wanted to already.

I love this news. I was thinking about selling half a dozen consoles and a small library of games towards my savings and a new console and was slightly hesitant because of FFXIII's exclusivity. But now that it's going 360ways, I'm perfectly content to pick up the xbox and happier also in that it appears to have more games that would suit me. From what I've seen so far, the PS3 don't seem to have as many RPGs compared to the 360, especially here in Aussieland where half the sweet RPGs never see the light of day here unless I were to import.

I'm guessing the PS3 version will likely be superior all things considered, but as story is the deal maker for me, I don't really give two hoots. If they were to cut out some story though, chances are I'd buy a PS3 down the line as well... That is if FFXIII succeeds where FFXII failed for me.

Ah, but if there were RPGs that you wanted to import, you couldn't do that for the 360 because everything's region locked. At least the PS3 is region-free.

Now, as for the news -- I'm not upset in the least that FFXIII is going to 360. I think it's a brilliant business move. After all, if we want to talk about betrayal here, what about when Squaresoft jumped ship and left Nintendo right before the launch of FFVII?

And Cesar has it right. I honestly don't see what the big deal of the multi-platform is.
PS3 people can still get the game for the PS3 if they so choose. They're not losing anything. The 360 people just gain a kickass game.

the important thing is the game is still a ps3 exclusive in japan, where ps3 owners will be playing it a year+ before a) anyone in america, and b) before any 360 owners. call me crazy but i take solace in that.

From what I read from the release, they said there isn't going to be that many differences in both games besides the multiple discs. The graphics will look the same, I think. Or very close to it. Besides, look at Virtua Fighter 5. I don't think that is flat looking renders. >_>;

And I'd rather have load times that last a few minutes instead of 20 minute install times. =P

heh, i guess that's all a matter of preference. as far as the graphics, i was referring to when rockstar said the ps3 rendered GTAIV better (and i mean let's face it - the 360 is running on a bunch of G5 processors, even my Mac is no longer on the PowerPC chips). will it make a big difference? no. will it be awesome having it on a single blu-ray disc running on the platform it was originally developed for? yes.

i mean look - sound the alarm, i'm a Mac-using ps3 owner. i obviously hate microsoft, the westernization (or bastardization) of gaming, and their ugly - aetheticless, buggy, knock-off product lines. so if you're looking for a non-biased, non-self-filtered, even 'legitimate' opinion you shouldn't talk to me hahaha.

I'm just going to say that I'm not really that surprised since FF is already on most of the other consoles these days. FF3 and 4 and Chrystal Chronicals DS, FF1- 2 and Crisis Core and Tactics on PSP, Xbox 360 has FFXI, and of course all the rest on Playstation and old Nintendos including gameboy(tactics). So let' s just say that this should not come as a shock. (Altough my preference leans more towards Playstation)

Yeah.. No. That's just an ignorant selfish statement right there. I don't think FF really made PS what it was... when the PS2 came out. (It went very downhill when the PS3 came out.. at least financially.) There's the Suikoden series to think about, as well as other games as well. FF isn't everything.

It's all about money and how many people play it. There is a reason to have exclusives! In like 20 years...there is going to be one system. Every game company will make it for that console. There is a reason for multiple consoles! So each system has it's own unique games. But I don't care. I plan on buying a 360 and a PS3 anyways.

This is really sad. It should have stayed for the PS3. But when you really think about it, this is exactly what happened to the N64 with Final Fantasy VII. I'm still going to get a PS3, even though the 360's cheaper.

sorry but i dont agree. FF during the ps2 era have been very disappointing and boring. Actually ff9 was the start of downhill. The characters are so lame and bunch of goofballs..plus the story is so lame, especially ff10 and 12. And Vaan looks like a puny version of zidane with shorter hair and body. God ff series were so sad. It used to be a great game that made me beat the game like 100 times to a game that I couldnt even bare 5 hours. And I forced myself to play too. The only reason why i even came on this forum is for the love of ff7 and 8.

I'm giving ff13 a last chance. ff12 would have been my last square game. But anyway on to the topic, 360 fans will jhave ff13..o wow big deal...there is a good chance that ff13 could suck and besides 360 fans are not really into rpg games anyway. All those 360 fans bragging about their console winning is because they are just fanboys and hate sony

I'm not bragging about anything, personally. I have a Wii, too. And actually I prefer fighting games and RPGs. Both things that the PS2 was plentiful with. Though 360 has more fighters than RPGs I think. It's all good, though.

Wow, I didn't even realize there was a topic already about this. I was in a rush when posting I guess... such big news, who cares right?

I'm still thinking about this and despite how hardcore of a FF fan you are, it really isn't a big deal. Companies are trying to make money and broadening to a larger market by releasing a 'hit' game to another console isn't unheard of. I think Sony dropped the ball on this... they didn't keep up in the market, or so it seems.

Sony has always been my RPG machine... Some of the best publishers make games strictly for sony... whenever I thought of Xbox, I didn't think of RPG...

Lost Odyssey was the last RPG I played for Xbox, and although it was great, it didn't have that FF flare to it... Microsoft has been yearning for a smash hit RPG game to hit their console, so this is really going to help... SE releasing FF to the xbox is a smart business decision... making the game compatible for another console doesn't take too much development time and they will make more money in North America from it... along with building a foundation of 'Hey... Xbox has RPGs too...'

I know it is weird... and I too was holding out for the PS3 to get strictly FFXIII... This will definitely hurt PS3's sales mark... but it is their fault... they should have been more aggressive to retain this relationship with SE. I saw the same thing with GTAIV when Microsoft signed a 50 million dollar deal to get exclusive downloadable content with them...

Despite all the opinions, it all comes down to the $$$ . Especially in the aggressive video game market today.

do you know I have read so much about this story and that is the smartest thing I have heard so far FF ain't what it used to be I mean lets look at the PS2 kind of era

Final Fantasy X- Fantastic game great characters,great story and a superb ending (my favourite to date) IMO slightly let down by the sphere grid.

Final Fantasy X-2 - hmmm well not bad gameplay but insulting story and no nobo music magic this is often seen as the worst ff game to date.

Final Fantasy XII - a mixed bag this one but IMO one of the worst FF games not so much the gameplay but my god what happened to the plot???

anyway like the wonderful quote above me said FF ain't everything and I am personally gald that we got MGS 4 instead of FF13 its one of the games I ain't really bothered about I wanna see this new level 5 RPG (white chronicles) but I just don't think it really matters anymore Resident evil 4 was still a masterpiece (and I remember some backstabbing in that saga).
