Inventory | Those ship names are recurring summon names in most/all(?) FF's. So they have just incorporated them as ships because the espers were named...other...things, and they wanted to involve them some other way It makes more sense in my head... >_> | ||||||||||||

FFXII is just paying respect to it's predecessors. Shiva, Ifrit, Bahamut and Leviathan have all been key summons in pretty much all of the FF games before XII. Since they went with Zodiac names/ types for summons, they couldn't include the classics. It's a nice little way of saying "we haven't forgotten about you!"

Inventory   | I have to agree with Pete and Lily.They're right.Though sometimes I wished they would keep the original gf names with FFXII espers.Like Belias would be Ifrit and Mateus would be Shiva.To me,I think its sad they wouldn't keep the tradition goin,but still..ships-gf names,thats still alright with me.

Inventory | I think that, because Ivalice Alliance is a strong set of stories and games in it's own world, the use of different summons are a breath of fresh air. Also I believe that with such a change in the series with this game it made the right decision by stepping away from tradition, the same way it did with the gameplay of XII. But we all know the originals are back in XIII, so it's not like there was a loss  The espers in XII were all darker as well, and more mature, all having a backstory mostly to do with the realms of Hell and such. Inventory | There is actually a ship named "Galuf-Val", after the character Galuf in Final Fantasy V, and "Val", the name of his castle. Also, a similarity between the two is that Galuf is killed by Exdeath, the final boss of FFV, and Galuf-Val is shot down by Vayne(the final boss in FFXII)'s Mist Cannons :] Yet another "We haven't forgotten ya!" flashs  | ||||||||||||
