Bestiary: [12-11-2008] TFF's Biggest Geek needs to have a book to prove that stereotype. Congrats on the win. :P - Dimi

MOST USELESS: Bleed, Toxify. actually I found a lot of black magic spells useless too. never really did much attacking with magic, almost always did more with melee weapons.

MOST USEFUL: Dispel/Dispelga, Curaja, Esunaga, Haste, Arise

Dispel is useful in nearly every boss fight after you get it, since most bosses have bravery, haste, protect, shell, reflect, or some combination of those, and dispel gets rid of it.

Curaja heals the entire party by a LOT. 'nuff said.

Esunaga really comes in handy when facing down groups of enemies that like to inflict multiple status effects on multiple members of the party. Clear that little problem right up.

Haste counters the slow status. again, nuff said.

Arise is one of the best spells I have, IMO. you lose a character in combat, swap in a substitute character, cast arise, and swap the previously KO'd character back in, at full HP! this also is useful if you can't swap characters in, just cast it like a normal life spell. (I don't have the luxury of character swapping due to a large level difference between my active and inactive party. the inactive ones die before they can get a hit in)

Lightning Bow: [12-04-2008] Here's your bow, man. I dunno what type Fuzz had, but I got you a pretty good one. You can, like, smite people with it. Because I'm rich. =D - Tiger Lily Diamond Sword: [12-06-2008] So then I was like, "I'll slice you with my diamond sword, bitch!" And then I was like "Woosh slice clash!" and then he was like... *dead* - Anachlirium Fire Ball: [12-12-2008] Here's my thanks to you for hosting the Christmas sig contest! Have fun burning people with it :p. - Violet

Useless: Any spells which inflict a negative status ailement on a foe. I just use the Nihopaloa (sp?) instead.

Useful: Curaga/ja, Arise, Protectga, Shella, Hastega

Healing spells are self explanatory, really.

With Arise, you can restore a KO'd character to full health. What ISN'T good about that?

Prtectga, Shellga and Hastega are all fantastic buffs to have on your characters, so there's my explanation.

I completely agree with you! Those status aliments are WORTHLESS! I can hardly name a FF where they were useful and can’t name any where they were critical for achieving victory.

Every spell magic in Final Fantasy XII were useless except for the Curaga/ja, Protectga and arise. The other magics were as useless as the summoned espers.

Like a lot of the people above...

Useful spells: Curaga, Arise and other white magicks that gives your party HP back or protects them etc. Also Esuna and Esunaga - they've helped me a lot when some foes have inflicted multiple status effects on my party.

Pointless ones: A lot of them. Mainly some of the time magicks that don't really do much damage to the foes straight away(countdown etc.). I'm sure they might be helpful sometimes but a lot of the time I completely forget that I can use them but it doesn't really make a difference to my battles!

Cool

The only useless Magicke spell that the enemy throws at me is the Dark casting. All it does is envelop you in darkness for like, a fraction of a second but, I've never seen it deplete any MP or HP. So I wonder why the enemy throws that at all? It's just stupid

Phoenix Down: [04-30-2009] Hope you live a good long while! This will hopefully help you. - Alther Feyz Lucifer Primus Round Shield X Potion: [06-15-2009] An X-Potion, for when you need it most <3 Love from a member of FaRaKi <3 - Kilala Ice Rod: [10-27-2009] Here is a frozen staff of justice to help you fight the fire my friend... - Kisuke Brigadine: [12-31-2009] - Private

I found Balance, among other things lost it's usefulness in later parts of the game. Why have critical HP to deal damage that your normal attacks could easily outrank? I also thought Toxify and Bleed were pointless when Bio did the job as well. Also, I don't know how to get Vanish to work...

As for useful spells, Curaja, maybe Renew, Esunaga, Hastega, Arise, among many more were almost staples for every tough battle. I think the only good Black Magick spells were non-elemental one like Shock and Scathe. Of course, every magick has it's own flavor. I just wish that flavor tasted a little better...

Spells that should have been useful but aren't:

Syphon. I both love and hate this spell. It's great when you're in a bind and running low on MP. The downside is that it doesn't work in any part of the game where it's actually needed, like long dungeon areas full of undead that it doesn't work on. (I'm looking at you, Necrohol!) Gah! Come on SE, give me something to work with here...

Also most enfeebling/status magicks. Coming from FFXI, where enfeebling is a hugely important part of battle, I was quickly disappointed to discover the uselessness of the spells in XII. Normal enemies aren't worth the MP and everything else is immune to all the good spells. Frustrating.

Protect/Shell. Not much of a surprise here, I find them useless in general as they don't block enough damage to be worth using unless you have a crystal nearby to repelenish MP that would otherwise have been better spent on other things.

As far as the rest, I agree with most of the previous statements as to which spells are and aren't useful. I feel like SE weakened too much of the XI-type system they used to really bring out the power magick could have been. It's kind of sad really, cause I like using magick but it's just not effective to use anything besides healing and a few select buffs.

Well as stated by most of the above posters I have to agree with the ones that are actually listed as bad and good. But I keep reading about how degraded the magics where in this game which is not true, take the Death spell for instance, in this game it acutally works more often then in previous FF's. Bravery and Faith where great additions to the magic lists in this title, ummm lets not forget about bubble. Plus one of the greatest magics of this game was blind (obviously on yourself) paired with sight unseen was one of the deadliest combinations you can get, great for leveling lower lever characters to high levels characters, also in most cases leads to instant K.O. (exception creatures in the light house, some of the optional cave areas, and in deadlands). Sleep was another good one paired with death when fighting some of the later bahemoths.

I thought Syphon, and all of the status magicks to be useless. Instead of Syphon just use the Technick 'Charge', and the status ones, as many people have already said, are useless.

Most useful to me were: Bravery, Faith, Protectga, Shellga, Dispelga, Arise, Cura, Curaga, Curaja and Bubble.

Bravery was great for my main attackers, and Faith was great for my healers. Dispelga was essential for bosses and most hunts, and the rest just speak for themselves. ^-^

For me, the useless spells were Protect, Shell, Bubble and Toxicfy. Of course there's more like lots of green magic and black magic spells.

The useful spells were Cur(e,a,ga,ja) , Fir(e,a...etc.), Blezar(d,ra...etc.) and Life. Those are some of the useful spells for me

I agree, they were all good at one point. Epically when a guest character introduced them to you. But later, they just don't feel like they used to.

Well first time around when i played FF12 I found that quickening were awsome and I could kill almost anyhting with them. "How dose this even aply to the question?" you may ask.

Well when I was killed in a fight I realised quickenings are not perfect so I decided to cast Hastega,Protectega,Shellga,Bravery on everyone and Faith on Everyone. Then my charecters were almost invincible! So I enjoy using the "Buffing" type spells. However I found the Scathe spell to be kinda bad beacuse by the time I finally had it my charecters already did more dammage without it. It dose look cool though.
