Sorry for sounding like an absolute n00b but i am asking these questions on behalf of my mate who has just started FFXI (on the X-Box 360 not PC)
I have many many questions that he has asked me to direct to you, well i actually said, "i know a shit load of people on TFF who play FFXI hopefully those chaps will be able to help" ~ Can you play alongside people that play the PC version even if we run the X-Box 360 version? ~Can someone explain the World Passes? ~He's unsure of what really to do first, he has 10gil, shitty items and is playing as a Hume warrior type, and goes by the name Bopsty. ~Any help/tips/suggestions for getting into the game would be greatful, because as i am writing this message he has accepted a mission to retreive a report from some mines and got instantly killed by a bunch of bats. And he's just added "anyone who wishes to be my friend on this game will be mostly appreciated" Darkest Regards Leviathan and Bopsty.

Well, there's no need to worry about console choice, all players are on the same servers. PS2 users, PC users, and 360 users are all on any server. As to world passes, what they are is a number that people can buy in-game that allows you to create a new character and specify the world you're going to. Only catch is that you have to know someone in that world to get a worldpass for there. As for what to do at first, best suggestion is to go out, kill a few things, gain a level, and try selling stuff on the Auction House. Make sure you don't forget to get Signet from the guards near the gate that way you can get crystals dropped off of monsters you kill. Crystals can actually get a new player's money built up rather fast.

We had another go earlier at it, and got his character to level 2, after slaying a load of giant hornets and sand worms.
We also completed the first mission, we had to go and find a report from someone in some mines in the east of the hume starting city, then we had to give the report (which was regarding some of the big ass green orc looking chaps) to this guard chap. My mate gaz also asked me to ask you chaps the following questions: ~He said can you define the signet? ~How do you find out what server you are playing on? i.e. Alexander? Shiva? ~He said if you chaps grant a world pass for him to get onto Alexander does he have to create a new character or is there anyway for him to transfer his current character across?

Signet allows crystals to drop from enemies and allows you to gather CP 'Conquest Points'
To find out what server you're currently on... Once you get on the world of the game... 'gameplay' It'll say (((welcome to "server name here"))) If he has to get a pass to a different world... then yes. He'll have to create a new character or he can delete the current Id and and remake it with all the information your mate wants. The difference thi time is it'll ask you for a buddy pass. I'am not sure how it phrases it though and I believe the pass is about tem digits. To tell you the truth... I'am not even sure how they go about doing buddy passes. It's been a while since I last used one.

My mate Gaz requests one more thing, we have another friend who is just about to install FFXI on X-Box 360, and Gaz wants to know the difference between a World Pass and a Gold World Pass.
And where you enter the World Pass number, as he is going to purchase a pass so our mate can play on the same world?

How fast of a connection would you need to play FF XI with reasonable quality. Also am I at any disadvantage for starting off like just now compared to the people who have been playing for yrs?

There are no disadvantages to start now rather than 2 years ago. There will always be low level players leveling up, probably more high level players leveling a new job, so you will have more experienced players in your parties. And there is more well established market, though inflated at times.
As for connection, you can do this on 56k, I did for a couple weeks, though downloads would take a long time simply being that it is 56k. But whatever connection you have will do fine.
