The manual can be misleading regarding certain information, like WAR/WHM is a good combo. It is only viable when you're soloing and under unique circumstances, not general leveling.

I'm now "updating" FFXI, I'm almost there, one more thing, where do I do the gamepad configuration?

You can do it in game over at "Misc. 2" under "Config" or go to "All Programs >> PlayOnline >> Final Fantasy XI >> Final Fantasy XI Config."

Yes, the updating process can take a while as there are just too many files to be updated. Especially if you have the original pack that included only the original game and the Rise of Zilart expansion, it can take up to 4-5 hours if you DSL sucks like mines. People who got the latest Vana'diel Collection 2007 which includes all the expansions released so far are better off as it have more up to date files. Let's not forget that the game is about 6 gigabytes large and thats only going by the original pack.

Good thing about the update though is when you disconnect, you start off from where you left off.

please explain to me IN DEPH how to get into Alexander. The one explanation is odd. If I create a character, I'm already in a world. If I get a world pass, it's only temporary, correct? so how do I get in???

When you create your first character, the system will randomly choose a world (aka server) for you. Once you log into that character, you will be in the selected world. Unless you have a world pass, you cannot choose which server you want to be in and it will be randomly selected.

When you can get a certain player from a certain world to buy you a world pass, you can input the name and code of the world pass when you create a character. Upon completing the creation, you will be in the world that which you used the world pass for.

For example, say I am from Alexander. I buy a world pass which includes a 10 digits code. I give you the 10 digits code. Then you go create a character. The process of the creation goes like this: you choose a race concurrently with gender, a face (each face have two variations, A and B), body size, one of the 6 basic jobs that you want to start as, then a name for your character and world pass if applicable, and after that, a home nation.

When you create a name for your character, under it will be a space for which you can input the name of a specific world you want to be in, follow by a third space to input the 10 digits code. Note that the code must be provided by a player already in the world that you want to be in. So if you want to join Alexander, you will need to find a player from Alexander to buy you a world pass and so on.

There is another alternative method that does not require a world pass. Simply put, you just create your character without touching the world pass area. When you get to selecting a home nation, just select one but don't continue. Instead, cancel out and go to the "Delete Character" section. Highlight your character and see what world he/she is in. If it's not the one you want, just delete, remake and repeat the process. Pretty simple. Of course, opting for a world pass is much easier.

In that case, then skip the pick a home nation. Instead, when you get to that point, cancel out to the delete character part. See if that works.

What I am trying to say is, If I cancel it, the person doesn't show up as being created unless I register it. So just give me a Alexander pass for christ's sake!

Does having more than one job make you able to use the attributes from the second job with your first? If I am a Monk Lv11 and a Black mage Lv4, can I use black magic when being a monk? What is the difference with the support job and at what level can I start to access this?

Once you complete the Sub-Job quest (prerequisite: Level 18) in Selbina, you can do just like your question asked... use the abilities of another job. The only catch is that the sub-job is at max, half of the level of your current job. So if you are level 18 Monk, even if your Black Mage is 50, it will only be level 9 as a sub-job.

That is actually one of the key things to building a good character in FFXI. For Monk, you should level Warrior and use that as your Sub-Job. In experience point party situations you can use this as a basic guideline: Never sub mage classes on a melee job and never sub melee classes on a mage job. There are a few situations where it is acceptable, but for regular experience point parties, you should try to stick to that guideline. A Monk has no Mana Points to start with. So, if you Sub Black Mage on it, you'll end up with a small amount of Mana Points and half-level spells. It'd basically be useless. Now if you sub Warrior, you can have stuff like Provoke and boosts to skills Monks already use. Same thing goes for mages. A White Mage subbing Warrior is silly in an experience point party. They should not be attacking monsters and their Mana Points will be lower than if they subbed Black Mage, for instance.

Now, if you are soloing or doing other things, feel free to do whatever combo you want. Heck you can try to in experience point parties, but I really wouldn't recommend doing crazy stuff unless you know the people or ask ahead of time. Usually thru the Dunes, nobody cares too much about what your sub-job is, because a lot of new people are there. Once you go to Jeuno though, you'd be well advised to start watching your subjob choices. If you want more clues as to what people use for subjobs, do a search. Go into the main menu and go to Search. Then select whatever job you want and look at what people are subbing. Its a good way to see what are the most popular choices, if you are not sure.
