Is Laguna Squall's father? (POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD)

First of all, I know he probably is, there are some clues in the game. I just don't see why they didn't explicitely mention it, it could've been a great addition to the storyline. But I guess the mystery around it makes it kind of cool.

So:

-Does anyone have some hard proof of the Laguna-Squall relation?

-And why was it never really used in the storyline?

Well there's no hard proof. I've noticed this in other Japanese stories where they hint at things but don't make it official, it's just so that they let YOU decide what you think happened.

But yeah.
Laguna and Raine got married. Villagers told Squall (I think?) that Raine had a child and died, and they were mad that Laguna left her.
And Kiros and Ward were going to tell Laguna and Squall but decided to let them figure it out, if I remember correctly.
Oh, and moombas call Squall "Laguna".

I don't know if there is any hard evidence like someone saying "Look Squall, this Lagune dork is your father."
But there is alot implied. And as Rally rightly stated, the moomba's do indeed call Squall Laguna.
And towards the end does Laguna not say he has something to tell Squall after the mission? Again it's not something solid but it gets you thinking.
Squall was Laguna and Raine's child, but she passed away so that's how he ended up in the orphanage.
Also at the end FMV, it shows Laguna and Raine exchanging rings. It then shows her tombstone. There has to be significance to that scene too. Well thats my opinion anyway ^~.

Yeah I know there's a lot of implicite "proof", but I don't quite understand why they didn't use the father-son theme more explicitely. Could have been really interesting (like letting one of'em die, hehe).

On the other hand, I do like the mystery around it and the freedom given to the player to believe what he wants. I think that was the purpose of the whole secrecy thing.

and

Um, does it has to be so explicit?

Let's get to most of the proof around:

Raine and Laguna got married, while Julia (Laguna's old flame) married with General Calloway.

Raine perishes after the birth of a child. This child is implied to be Squall, which determines his birth and his orphan condition.

The Moombas call Squall "Laguna".

Squall and Laguna are roughly alike. Then again, CG images don't show that much; they weren't as advanced as now. However, for the Moombas (who are often considered child-like in thought) to recognize someone by their faces...

Ellone is basically Squall's sister/stepsister. She probably knows more than that.

Specifically; Squall recalls Laguna's past through the power of the Guardian Forces. Or similar power. Heck, Squall essentially controls Laguna up to a certain point. So he's not exactly a mere rider. Either that, or Squal pretty much behaved as Laguna would, which would suggest some sort of genetic memory or the like.

This is pretty much part of the secondary storylines; otherwise, why so much effort in the foreplay if eventually the story would have been false. It makes no sense by any means (other than Square screwing up badly)

So, given that most of the proof is implicit but undeniable, the question is this: why would you need hard, explicit proof? There's not much to think about it, unless Squall is the result of a time paradox or product of immaculate conception. That's one of the good points of the game; Squall's backstory and how Laguna's end of the story becomes Squall's beginning of his own.

Have you ever icked at the idea that the Squall/Rinoa relationship could have been incestuous?

My point was not that I needed hard evidence of the father-son relation, but what the actual reason would be they made the story this way.

I'm not saying it bugs me, cause I like the mystery around it. I was just wondering what other people thought might have been a reason besides adding a little mystery to the story.

Well I think that there was no other reason besides to make story more interesting to the player.All I can say that Square Soft wanted to be like this,so that players could actually wonder if Laguna is really Squall´s father (To me it was obvious that Laguna is Squall´s father.They even look similar).

I had a small thought about this. Well two actually (surprise surprise ).
The first one could purely be circumstantial - but bear with me.

1. To receive Rinoa's card you must defeat the General. The General is her father so he holds her card. Who must you defeat to attain Squall's card? Laguna. This implies as well that he could very well be Squall's father. There are other similar things to back me up on this. Take Ellone - she holds Laguna's card. She has a special bond with him and she probably sees him as a father hence why she has his card.
Where do you find Zell's card? Why... hang on... don't you defeat his mother? ~^.

2. This theory is on the names. Laguna, Raine and Squall. Notice a pattern?

Laguna = Spanish for lagoon = a stretch of salt water separated from the sea by a low sandbank or coral reef.

Raine = looks like rain = moisture/water condensed from the atmosphere that falls visibly in separate drops

Squall = a sudden violent gust of wind or a localized storm, esp. one bringing rain(water), snow, or sleet.

Each name is linked somehow to water if you get my drift. Coincidence?

Also remember that the Moomba's (who Laguna attempted to train how to speak), mistook Squall for Laguna in Dollet prison. According to the tutorial information, Moomba's recognize people by tasting peoples blood (presumably Squall was bleeding after being tortured). This would mean that Squall would need to have similar blood to Laguna's, which of course would be the case if Squall was Laguna's son.

I don't know why they can't just come out and say "YES THEY ARE FATHER AND SON NOW STFU". XD I mean, they put out all this evidence that they possibly are, and are saying we can think what we want. D: Not cool.

It's also weird.. do orphans ever think about who their parents were? Squall never asked himself about them, did he?

I don't know about that. Squall from the beginning can't make friends or anything due to the fact that he feels he's always let down. That must stem from having no parents, having been in an orphanage and losing 'Sisi'. Remember the flashbacks?
As well as Squall mentioning on several occasions that you cannot rely on others. He felt he couldn't rely on his parents or something. Or maybe he thought he was the let down. Call in a psychologist! XD

when you go in the past it talks about how the girl that laguna likes get prego and has a kid ... that is sent to an orphanage <--- Squall

It doesn't bother me or anything, but maybe someone found some hard evidence which other people wouldn't have noticed...

And yes, I KNOW he is Laguna's son, that's not what I am questioning.

Actually, verbally (or typed as the case may be) saying that Laguna is his father - Squall is his son isn't hard proof. Now DNA testing is.... <_<!

Hmph, I think it's time for a new FF8 game maybe? xD hmmm well it seems the proof is right there. Okay so, Ellone was neither Raines nor lagunas kid right? Just a little girl that lived next door, and i may remeber right that Laguna is writing to Ellones Parents in disc 2 or 3 ???

So, now Ellone is captured and sent to Esthar, and Laguna knocks up Raine[they are married btw] and heads to Esthar to go save Ellone. so yada yada Ellone is saved and sent back to Raine, since Laguna decides to live in Esthar to help them with the sorceress. Raine dies in child birth and both Raine and that child *cough Squall cough* are sent to the orphanage and bam!

I just realized after typing that, that simplified versions of this were already said but i guess its just for confirmation :]

And I think the moombas are the best evidence out of all of them.

Well, we all know that Laguna and Raine got married, also that Squall's 'sis' is Ellone, who grew up with Raine and Laguna. Also, Squall has Raine's chestnut colored hair and blue eyes but his personality in some matters is like Laguna's (like having trouble expressing his feelings with words)
Plus somewhere in the game is mentioned that Raine died by giving birth to a baby boy. Oh and Moombas call Squall "Laguna"! xD

So, I guess the signs are clear and Square enix just thought to leave it at that. Plus, that "mystery" around whether Laguna is or isn't really Squall's father gave the inspiration to many great writers to create amazing stories!

i always thought that laguana was squall's dad, partly because of the moombas, but on the ragnorak, kiros and ward say something about looking like his (squall's) dad. how would they know his dad, if it wasn't Laguana?

Actually, Laguna isn't Ellone's uncle. She just called him that affectionately. She is actually his adopted daughter, and not blood-related to Squall.

Also, why do you capitalise all of your Ls?
