Its a game thats probably why they had him survive LOL. Plus your body is pretty amazing you can survive alot of trauma and and injuries.The icicle probably just hit a bone and got lodged between a bone instead of hitting the heart directly,thats what your rib cage is for. I dont know what other theories id probably have to do some research but it probably broke his ribs and maybe punctured a muscle or something.

Well, there was no wound where the icicle had hit, so who knows? Remember, none of this was explained, whatsoever. It was at the end of a disk and they took it as some sort of bizarre cliffhanger to the past scene. For all we know, Edea healed it. Or maybe it was like an ordinary blizzard spell? I mean, we never knew how Quistis and crew got into prison. Or how Irvine never got imprisoned to began with... He was right in front of the Sorceress with Rinoa and Squall. So many things unanswered in that disk break.

It was all weird, he got hit but there was no markings or any evidence he had been hit. Maybe it was an illusion or something! If wouldn't have been good though if he did die, killing the main character a quarter through the game isn't that wise. I don't know why he didn't bleed or anything, it was never explained.

I don't see what everybody is questioning. He just got impaled through the heart. That's not a fatal injury. In fact, being impaled doesn't even leave a scar. I thought everybody knew this.

Well, from my knowledge of reality TV and movies, and the fact I'm a pre-med student, getting stabbed through the heart or shot or IMPALED through the heart is actually HIGHLY fatal. Talk about irregular heart beat, chest and lung hemorrhaging, and if they get impaled and block the ventricles or atrium, it's an instant death. Even if there is suction holding the heart in place, removing an object takes SERIOUSLY careful surgery, MANY MANY MANY MANY pints of blood and one wrong means massive internal bleeding- and if there is too much internal bleeding to begin with, operating on such a wound is impossible. Loss of blood pressure, lowering brain activity, and if there is no blood to the brain- it's over.

In Squall's case, I doubt that he had a team of doctors to his immediate attention, nor did he go through any specialized medical procedure. That, and he had NO MARK. If you have ever seen an impaled patient after healing, the scar is a strange sight, especially after surgery.

Spoiler: My theory is that Edea, briefly back to her old self and knowing who he was, used her magic to heal him... then was promptly possessed again and imprisoned him. Since Squall was unconscious during this time he had no knowledge of this. If you remember he questions himself: 'My wound... No wound... How?'

Or maybe he was holding the icicle underneath his left arm...

Well, although Edea healing him isn't out of the question, I'm doubting that there was any sort of of relapse of Edea's old self- that would have been noted in the Canon storyline. However, Edea may have healed him for interrogation purposes, because Edea (Ultimecia) obviously wanted to know the secret of SeeD, and seeing as neither Irvine nor Rinoa were SeeDs, he was the only viable candidate in Edea's presence at that time. My guess is that Zell and Co. weren't found until a bit later. Even still, there is shoddy evidence as to what happened between the end of disk one and beginning of disk two. A sort of: "Make your own theory, because this is the outcome, anyway." deal. It's definitely cooler to debate over what happened between, than to write lines and lines of pointless filler. Smart move on Square's part.

I figured he lived because well it's a game and if I got an ice spike into my heart chances are I'd be done for.

Speaking on a more game level though, it's possible Edea used the spell but he healed as he was going down or after it was in him so he wouldn't die. Perhaps he used a holy war as he was dying so he could be alright..who knows.

One of the cardinal rules of RPGs: None of the battle system healing/protecting schematics have ANYTHING to do with the storyline, especially in dire moments when the character really has cooked their goose. Like getting impaled. Or dying. The battle system will only apply to the story to screw the characters over further. Or give a stupid tutorial.

Basically, Edea has more likely 'healed' him for some storyline-based reason (such as to interrogate him, because you know RPG games are simply there to screw over the characters they present), than to have someone use a Hero. Then again, I doubt square wanted to attempt to tread on these paths because of these issues.

Lol, I've been stabbed with a kebab skewer, and I have a scar... Well, not through the heart, just a little higher than my belly... But still, I've been left with a scar.

I think it was just a little trick Eda made up. Eda was sick like that. AND it is just a game...

... Its been a while since I've played, but I don't think Eda would have killed Squall because wasn't it her who looked after him and the others at the Orpanage? Unless she didn't know then at the time... *shrugs* I gotta play again!

I don't think that it ever explains what happened in the game..Maybe depends on the partys levels or something like that. Plus,he got hit in the shoulder, so it's not surprising that he survived.

Seriously. O.o It doesn't have to make sense because Square can do whatever they want with the storyline, it's their game and it's their story to tell. I'm sure they love to add a bit of mystery, they want people to ask these questions and be curious about it. I suppose they just want people to make up their own happenings behind it, there's no actual details about how he survived and what not.

That's like asking where are Squalls Burns from Seifer's Firaga or etc. But then again, considering his injury occured during a cutscene, it's a different occasion. Maybe they're looking at a 'Spinoff' of FFVIII, maybe on Edea's perspective. Maybe it'll explain that she decided to spare Squall's life for some reason, maybe beacuase she was/is Matron, and still 'Loves' Squall as a son.
