I got home just a few days ago and got kinda bored so I started a new game of FFVIII. I just noticed that while I was summoning the GF's that if you press and hold the select button that a little hand and the square button show up. I pressed it alot but at certain points there is a little red X over the hand. The count starts at 75 and goes up unless you press the square button while the red X is up which causes you to start over from 75. I got the count up to around 125 and it seemed to do more damage.
Does anyone know what I am talking about and if so, What does this action actually do? Ohh yeah and if everyone already knows about this than im sorry I can just be slow sometimes. |

That's the "Boost" ability that your GFs can learn. To my understanding, the number represents the damage % - If you begin boosting, the damage % will start at 75 and go up. They put in the X so that you couldn't just press square a bunch of times and do more damage - you have to wait until there's no X to proceed, otherwise you go back down to 75% damage. And yeah, the point is to make your GFs do more damage than usual.

Boost is actually one of the better abilities throughout the game, and is vital early on. A strategy to good GF would be the animation time, so as to allow you to Boost it up to its full potential...that explains why eden's animation is so damn long

Thanks for the info. I played through the game the first few times not even noticing that. I mostly depended on the limit break things. I just kept squall at low health and it made the game extremely easy. But now that I know to use that it makes the GF alot more useful.

Ya like the others said you do have to have the boost skill in order to do it. I figured that out on the second disk. I was borde and started pressing bottons when summoning. I think the highest I got was like 149%. You do have to watch out though for that X thing. I messes me up alot of times. but I think they should of put the thing about boosting in the FF8 booklet. Would of been useful in the first disk.

Haha, I didnt discover the boost for ages either, took me until about disc 2 or 3... I forget now.
But yes, it's very useful. Bear in mind that some GFs cannot learn the ability. Diablos, Cactuar, Cerberus and Carbuncle. I've probably missed one or two... but I can't think straight this morning ![]()

No, Doomtrain you can boost. I'm certain of that. Still, I can't help but feel I've missed a GF out...

Ugh....i didn`t know about the feature. And I heavily relied on summons on disk1 and 2. I never used them on Disk 3 or 4.

Same here... by the time Disc 3 rolled around, I was just having Squall rip everyone apart with his Renzokuken. Eden and Bahamut are both powerful, but compared to what the characters' limit breaks can do, they're puny.
Nonetheless, Boost comes in handy during the first 2 discs, when they're the all-powerful things. It especially is nice when you're taking down that damn spider robot thing on your first mission. Quezacotl + Boost rules all over him.

I found boost only handy before and during the first mission, after that I had Squall and Zell destroy anything standing in their way. (Water junctioned to strength = amazing in the beginning)

When I play the game now I only use GFs on the first disk, towards the end of Disk 1 I just reply upon limit breaks. Although I still use the GFs because most of the attack animations are badass. I just love Shiva and Queza's attack. Ifrit is really cool as well. Doomtrain and Eden take to long though, so I only used them once to see their attack.
Diablos's attack relies on his level, if he's at Level 100 Dark Messenger will do 9999 Garanteed. |
