Squall?
I frankly hated him.
I thought the whole 'Cold-hearted' thing was pathetic. It was unrealistic and hollow. It seemed Square was trying too hard to make him 'cool'. Cloud perfected the cold thing with his misadventures and personality. And was Rinoa a lesbian or something? As Squall looked like a girl and as for his personality, let's just say no real girl would be that persistent in chasing after him. Edit: Mellowed the post and fixed a few phrases. I don't know if it's possible, but could a mod or something remove the word 'Retarded' from the bottom option in the poll, it's a little too politically incorrect. EDIT BY NEO NECRON: All read before posting Guys, I'm constantly seeing short spammy posts in this thread. Not loads, but they're there. Please folks, try to refrain from posts which are merely one-line off-topic dribble. I'm editing this into the first post so everybody should read it. If I see anymore spam, a warning will be issued. Sorry to come across as bossy. Happy posting, folks ^_^

I don't think it was cold hearted so much as "emotionally distant" which from what I've seen in movies, is actually a big selling point. Sometimes some woman feel that they must make a guy act more like a human. Then I think in Japan and the US too actually, guys who are feminine are more popular than those that are much with the butch. Like the guy who played Legolas was extremely popular with girls, I think even moreso than those really tough looking people like Vin Diesel.
As for the character, he did kind of make sense, since after people experience something traumatizing, they shut themselves off from the potential of further pain or at least are wary of it, which would come from another emotional attachment to someone. |

If you play through the entire game, you realize that he's the only non-hollow character.
What with his traumatized backgrounds. And if you pay attention to his internal dialogues, you find that he's actually a big pansy. His distance and coldness both are derived from the fact that he's afraid of being hurt and losing someone he loves. He created the idea of not needing companionship so he would never seek it.

Yeah, quite true, Squall and Rinoa are the only ones that were given their due in the game. All the rest of the characters were supporting cast that seemed to have been forgotten after their first introduction. Each of them had their little moment where you got something of them, but it was Squall's show, with Rinoa at his side. Though Rinoa isn't even completely give her due, though they make it up on the third disk I think and some of the second disk with them at FH. Squall is definitely one of my favorites, because he lost the one was dear to him at a young age. Which he then put himself into self isolation because of it as a protective machicaism (SP). So his only person left to speak too is himself, where he is very aware of his situation. But unwilling to share those thoughts, because it means getting close to someone. I see quite a bit of Squall in me, so I can understand his character a little or a least enjoy it more.

Since Squall had so much story compared to the others, it was really more of a movie than an average Final Fantasy. You should learn about every character in a Final Fantasy, and not just the main character. It should of been called Final Fantasy VIII: Squall and Rinoa. Completely forgetting Zell, Selphie, Quistis, and Irvine.

I dunno, Nut, we do get to learn a bit about Quistis. 2 moments to mention are:
1) Her story in Balamb of how she gained and lost her instructor liscence 2) Her account of her feelings towards Squall. Squall, Rinoa, Quistis and possibly Seifer and Edea are pretty much the game's only characters with much development, partially the reason many FF fans looked down on FFVIII. I don't mind though, I love the game.

I could see what you mean with Quistis, but what about Irvine, Zell, and Selphie. Zell is living with his adopted mother in Balamb, Iirvine is a student from Galbadia Garden, and Selphie is from Trabia Garden. They all knew each other at one time. Thats pretty much all you learn.
I didnt like Final Fantasy VIII as much because you couldnt name all your characters. Thats the only reason why i dont love it.

Strange that you don't like the game because you can't name all your characters. Though each character in the game were given a little time to work with. Selphie had Trabia Garden and the things that happened there. Plus the way people were around her and spoke of her. Irvine had his time during the first disk with Sorceress Assassination and him choking and the way of his life. Zell had his little side quest and his home of Balamb. They were all small parts, but you were let in somewhat on their personalities.

Squall just saught to stay away from people so e didn't have to deal with thier problems. He even said so in the game. I liked him personally he was smart. And if you would be so kind to open your eyes once he made friends he saught to protect them. Rinoa in space, Sefier trapped by evil Edea, Good edea from one witch. He was better than you people give him credit for.

If you think about it Cid aranged the 5 orphans to fight together, and I think he chose them because they knew Edea best out of all the SeeD.
