Squall?

I understand him just fine,but that doesn't change the fact that I think his entire persona is bullshit and that he's a stupid character.

Well then OmegaGear I put this to you :

Well then , if Squall has " no feelings " then why did he go up into space with Rinoa on disc 3 then ? Why did he carry Rinoa all the way to Esther ? Why did he risk HIS life to save hers ?

Do these facts and others not show he has emotions ? The emotion of love ? So when you say he has no feelings ..... your wrong. His emotions and feelings are what spured him on throughout the adventure.

And it's not the " bunch of pixels " that I understand . It's the personality and actions of the character that I understand. I understand how his past has affected him.

It's because of events in his past : Losing his parents , losing his " Big sis " Elle etc. that he turned out the way he did. He pushes people away from fear of losing them.

So you see , he might not be one of the best of characters , but he is one of the most real characters. He has a believeable past and one that some people can relate to and understand.

So do not go and judge him on base value people. Some of you may think he is one of Squares " failures " and that he is a totally unreal character. But in truth he is probably one of the more realistic of the Final Fantasy characters.

Wow, Squall, that's very nice. Did I ever say I didn't think he had emotions? Hmm... let me read all the posts I made in this thread... NOPE, I never said that!

Well for those who HAVE or may have tried to state that he doesn't then .... the previous post applys.

Besides its not as if your putting up a valid argument " I thought he was unrealistic and a total bullshit character ".

That is a valid argument, because that is my OPINION! I said "I thought" not "He is". Jesus, get it right. You're letting your total support for him blind you into a rage. I understand that you like him as a character, and that's great. I don't though, and you can't convince me otherwise, because I just didn't like him. I didn't think he was a failed character, I just didn't LIKE him. Do you understand?

I've lived a bit more than 15 years.

In my fifteen years, I haven't actually met someone like Squall.

Squall was at a very jackass stage of his life. He didn't avoid relationships completely. He was perfectly okay with speaking with others from the party. Rather, he tried to control his relationships/exert power over them. He made few efforts to push people away truly, and the few he does make are only done when the people have become emotionally involved in him. (It would make sense if he pushes people away when the reverse happens, because then he'd be afraid of the consequences of said emotional involvement)

He was intentionally breaking their hearts/hurting their feelings to exert control over the relationship. Very malicious.

Very realistic, absolutely. I have met a guy like that. But there's more to Squall...

When you look at Squall's background, you see reasons he'd become afraid to depend on people... but in his profession (working with a "Team" of mercenaries rather than being a lone wolf) his job required him to depend on people.

He was madly pursuing a career that relied on working with other people, yet at the same time, his entire history (and his own personal claims) make him someone who actively avoids having relationships. (And when you've been actively avoiding them since you came to the Garden, you'd definitely be someone who would realize at least partway through, that his job wouldn't allow him to do that)

It's a contradiction that makes him very unrealistic.


Not to say he isn't an interesting character. I liked his story and small bits of development... but simply put, it was unrealistic (the issue at hand)

The plot to FF8 was poorly written (if you need proof just note the GF bit) because they were trying really hard to use a unique narative, one that went from past to present in order to have two parallel stories that could fill in the blanks. But the parallel stories had some holes in the interaction, and the only way to fix that would be to add in GFs, so that Laguna would have something to tell the player that Squall wouldn't already know.

And in their poorly written story, a realistic character just wouldn't fit. So they had to fudge him a bit to have him act differently than the awesome/cool background would have him do.

Squall is sooo cool, he's quite cute too, he kicks ass, he's the best FF character going!

I liked squall- the whole taking a step back from people made him sexy and mysterious ^^

Heh, i didnt mind his character at all.. the one main thing i noticed about him was that, he never hid what he wanted to say to anyone, he always said it to their face.. then, when they talked back he would shrug back and give out a "Whatever....." heh! LOL.. i found it to be quite funny. But earlier on in the game, when Quistis felt like letting a bit off her shoulders to Squall, you gotta admit he WAS a bit rude there but he was totally correct.. he just didnt give his thoughts the polite way, more like "I dont need anybody elses problems to cloud my judgement" heh.

Good character, through and through.. shame some people dislike the way he was made, lol.

Squall was pretty cool. The problem that most people point out is that he was very cold. Well he just does not want to get hurt. Its the hedgehogs dilema(evangelion) the hedgehog is afraid to get close to another because it afraid to get hurt and i think this is the same with squall, and that's why rinoa is there to get him to open up again. Many people say he's just trying to be cool and it's pathetic, but that's not the case. Some thing really traumatizing happened in his life, i think many people would be withdrawn the same way. Suall is not just cool, he's a very emotional character, even though he does not show it himself.

I agree with Fragdemon on a lot of things there. But contradiction was not the only problem with him. Like I said, I just think the character development was terrible and he didn't seem to change at all. But as fragdemon said "The plot to FF8 was poorly written", so I also think that the story didn't give him room to change.

Hey the story was excellent, he did change he changed big time, you could see the stages of him changing I thought Squall was more open after he met Rinoa! I'm sorry but the plot was excellent and well written. Of course the story gave him room to change, coz he started to change at the start of Disk 2 and you could see that he was changing, it was so obvious, you could tell he was changing. Squall's great!

Squall did change, Square just didnt show it well. At first Squall was rejecting the love of his friends, who he saw more as just comrades at that point. But towards the end, he was in love, and he did see the others as friends.

Square just didnt show it well enough. They didnt show the development of Squall's emotions in a way that was followable. His actions were mostly the same throughout the game even though his emotions weren't, that was Square's flaw.

Squall_Leonhart I disagree with you on that you said he wasn't a good leader coz he was jes excellent, I mean his speech when the gardens were batteling that speech was so heartfelt and really learderly like, it was inspriational!

Squall is the best forever!
