True, also he didn't want himself getting hurt, though in an an emotional was, he was worried if he got close to a person he'd feel bad when he lost them. His fears came true when Rinoa was taken to the Sorceress memorial. It think that's really why he origionally didn't want to go after her, as he let his fears take him over. Quite sad, really.

I voted for "a bit of a pain"
He was allrigth at times, but most of the times he was sucky compared to other main characters. He looked cool though, but I didn't really like the whole "whatever" attitude that he had throughout the entire game. And he was way too shy to Rinoa.....SPOILER, at the end it all got good though ^^ Peace out |

I didn't like the whatever attitude either, but it wroked well for the story, as the whatever attitude slowly abates during the course of the story and Squall develops into a man who cares for his friends and his chick.

Actually on the tangent of the other characters, they were all kind of unique, and while it was a bit of a cop out for them to all only have that "we grew up in the orphanage together!" background, aside from the already brought up thing about how they're tied to Edea for that reason, I think I recall the Latin in the beginning traslated to something about fated children.
Then while Squall and Rinoa got the most development (with Quisty as a distant third), all the other characters kind of served to show the story from different perspectives, which was actually kind of the point of Firefly (ignore that, but basically that show was about the different perspectives of nine people). Selphie kind of shielded herself from the hard part of the world by being bubbly (her school net journaly thing), Zell thought that he did have his own little world to defend (his mum), Irvine had the whole brash exterior though he's a wuss (in a... um... pleasant way), and that may or may not cover everyone? |

Squall was trying to ignore everyone. like he said to rinoa, he didn't want to get his hopes up and get hurt. so he tried to be introverted so that no one would get close to him and so he won't be hurt emotionally if something happened to someone he cared about. so that was the whole idea of his attitude. i mean, you can't have someone who is friendly [think tidus] and scared of making friends and getting hurt.

Squall is a good character in that he does not let his emotions get in his way like some characters did. Squall always stood on top of his game and was always willing to fight. He never gave up and for that, he has my respect.

Squall pretty powerful as a fighter. As a person eh. I met him i'd probuly feel sorry for him...I'm a bit of a softie lol. Selphie had her part in the game pretty much Trabia garden!!And the base mission ...Zell had pretty much of Disc 1 and the battle in Balamb in disc 3 and the Ultima weapon battle..
Quistis had feelings for Squall and she was with him in disc 1 Quistis had the whole game. So did Rinoa. Irvine had that FMV when he first came in and thats it... |

I didn't mind Squall, though at times he did get on my nerves, such as disk one and some of disk two, how he interrupted things and spoiled them with a simple, "Whatever....". He completely ruined Irvine and Selphie's getting together on the night they planned the concert, by talking to Irvine and saying "Oh well." But Squall was a pretty cool character. It was nice how Rinoa somehow brought him out of his shell.

But anyway here isn't the place for this. I thought Squall was a good character and I liked how he developed throughout the game from a uncaring , self-centred teen ... to someone who really cared about his friends and the woman he loved. As for Rinoa being a lesbian ..... that comment is just WRONG , SICK AND WRONG !! |

Squall was a truly uninspiring character, and I don't see how anyone could even think that he was awesome, "bad ass", or cool, let alone want to be like him. The boy was a total asshole to anyone and everyone, a poor leader, and completely lacking in personality. I was so happy to see him die in the end, but to my horror he somehow lived...

Yeah well 12 people appear to disagree with you Omega ... so live with it.
He might not have been the best of leaders but it was all part of the story line. Besides he turned out alright in the end , which was all part of the character development. He showed that not everyone is perfect and that we don't all have the best of lives !! |

Him turning out alright in the end is your opinion, not mine. I just didn't see him changing much at all. He did lose his selfishness, but there's no apparent reason why. It just sort of happened, IMO, and that's not a very good way to show a character "changing".
