I'm pretty sure that Cloud loves Aerith. I played FFVIII, and Tifa loved Leon in FFVIII.

It's sad, but Cloud loves Aerith. I think it's the Jenova cells and Zack's memory that makes him fall for Aerith.

Tifa and friends were kinda mean to Cloud when they were kids. What I remember from the the scene from the lifestream, Cloud always wanted to be friends with Tifa, but she didn't even know he existed.

For me Tifa - because ever since Cloud is a child he always admired Tifa however when he meets Aerith - He found someting very special about Aerith.

Cloud probably loved them both, but differently. In any case, since Cloud doesn’t make his feelings clear towards anyone of them during the game it is left entirely up to our personal interpretations. He cried like a baby when Sephiroth stabbed Aries – so that proves he had very strong feelings for her. Tifa, on the other hand, Cloud to me seemed content just being her friend, although I think Tifa secretly wanted more – even though she never let it on. Personally, I think they were both desperately in love with Cloud but Cloud was undecided. If I were Cloud though, it would not even be a competition, I would happily settle down with Tifa. Heh.

Cloud loved Tifa, considering that she was the reason as to why he joined SOLDIER in the first place. Kingdom Hearts is not supposed to be taken seriously as part of the FFVII storyline. (i.e. Yuffie's hometown isn't Wutai in KH., Squall changes his name to Leon, ect...) I'm not saying he didn't love Aerith, but deep down inside, it was Tifa that he wanted to impress. Being that Aerith was not as shy as Tifa, Cloud was more willing to recipricate those feelings, (Who wouldn't if a girl was throwing herself at you.) while Tifa was more reserved.

In Advent Children, Cloud is overwhelmed by guilt, considering that he couldn't save Aerith or Zack. (If it was all about his "love" for Aerith, his somewhat schizophrenic mind would only be showing conversations and flashbacks with Aerith, but since it was of both Zack and Aeirth, it's much more possible that the reason he hangs on to them both so much is because it all goes back towards his insecurities about how he couldn't save his friends. Mind you, if you recall, it all started out with Tifa who almost died because he couldn't save her when she tried to go see her mother after she died.)

In sum, he always loved Tifa, but developed feelings for Aerith. His dwelling on her death is more out of guilt than love. As it was for Zack.
