I think that he truly loved Tifa. Remember how he always was trying to get her to notice him when they were young. He even left to join SOLDIER to make her appreciate him.

Then he came back to her when he was sixteen, helped ave her, then became a resarch specimen and brainwashed. That's the reason he treated her like crap for a lot of the game. Also Zack loved aerith/s and part of zacks memories became clouds. Very confusing but that is how I believe it works.

I think he loved Aeries, but she turned out to be the divine Jesus figure. He realized that Tifa was his human love. In a sort of way, it's how all the regular people are in love with big celebreties. Aeries was the divine ancient who died to save the world, Tifa was a childhood friend. I'ts hard to explain, somebody please try to clarify what I'm trying to say here.
