I usually use regular attacks but magic comes in very handy for healing and fixing problems like poison. I usually try to save my magic just to heal other characters and I hardly ever use summons because I forget they exist.

Magic is def. the more useful.... No summons can caste haste, or life etc. which is the most useful part of magic... other than physical attacks with those as back up... Summons are only useful in boss fights to quickly wipe a lot of HP out, but they take a lot of MP... they're also too long for short battles

I am going to have to disagree with you on that. Phoenix can bring members back to life, when you summon it. But thats the only thing I have to disagree with you on.

when you think about it, isnt a summon just an overpowered magic attack?

Yes, in FF VII...they doesn't make anything that change party's abitilies...Like FF VIII they can learn abitilies and in FF VI you learn magics from them...I don't know about newer than FF VIII how those work in those...was it something like that after summoning they stay in battle and fight like they was party members...but yes, summons in FF VII are just big magics that has take something shape...

I always thought along the same lines. Summons are only a form of magic. I might be wrong, I haven't played any FF games in a while...but, doesn't a summon take away some MP? o___O That would only mean that they're typically along the same.

of course, for most FF games (and many other RPGs for that matter), summons use lots of mp to cause lots of magic effect.

in FFX, summoning an aeon takes no MP to cast, when you summon it, your party is temporarily replaced by the aeon, which has its own HP, MP, physical/magical attacks, and overdrive spell (many of which are copies of summoned attacks from previous entries)

oh, and testbug isnt calling me a noob anymore. how bout that.

Well I like to use regular attacks a lot but I would say summons are better than magic. Although there are lots of different types of magic, summons look so much better. Also they are really powerful

Yes summons are magic. But they are kinda like a special magic. That is why they are red materia on the games, that show the materia. like FFVII. You notice that the materia for the magic is green, and command is yellow, etc.

Also that is why they have diffrent names also. Summons like Ifrit, Shive, etc, are called summons. Ultima, Bolt, etc, are called magic. So yes they are both magic, but still diffrent...

I wonder how materias has related to this...but anyway...like I, IRANianCha0s, ex-Tifa said they are 'special' magic nothing else...they just have shape of summon...

Where you base that those aren't different...there isn't any story behind summons so you can't say that thems aren't magic...they are just magic...you know that when you cast magic there aren't anything that stays after that magic have dissaper...like summons....you summon and again there isn't left anything that proves that you have called summon...you can't count that 'status' is lefting...you can get poisoned from poisonus frog...so summons are magic

Hmmm I'm not really sure what to vote because summoning is magic especially on this game where the summons only appear to make one blow or multiple blows (KOTR)

There are some really cool spells aswell but I really liked Neo-Bahamut in this game so I'm gonna vote summons. N-B was simply amazing and he was my favorite Bahamut on any FF so w00t

But as I said, summons is really somekind of powerful magic attack.

What in the hell are you talking about? Materia is magic, and summons, and stuff in the cat. That is how it got into the subject.
